Well, it seems pretty "meathead" of them if they don't consider that the Jennings catch brought a high interest in enrollment, not to mention all the donors because of athletics...

That's massively oversimplifying the internal politics of universities. Most schools have to sacrifice a lot of $ for sports, so the culture of academia is not friendly toward athletics.

Then what's this mean? Was the current chancellor hired for appearances or because she is super qualified?

I'd like to see the reaction to a super qualified woman getting hired as AD.

Not sure. I honestly really skimmed over the post and glossed over that part. I basically injected My feelings onto what was written.
So I'all clarify ,
As far as me, if she can do the job, I'm all for it, if it's a PR move for appearances, in not for it.

All those leaving coupled with this recruiting class spells complete disaster for Jones. I'm telling you boys, he's on borrowed time. Unless he can somehow learn to coach by August we are looking for a new coach this time next year. Sucks being a vols fan

It's actually GREAT to be a Tennessee Vol. You are not one with that last sentence.

I share that stance. I also believe this place would go absolutely nuts if a woman were hired as AD, no matter what the resume looked like.

If its anyone other than Blackburn this place will go nuts.

Edit: and if its Blackburn it will be why it took so long.

I think everyone might as well give up on hiring Blackburn. If they were going to hire him it would have already happened.... <5% chance he is coming here IMO

Just the whole thing read like Brice is inserting himself into the article.

He's implying that Perry couldn't make the grades because he wasn't allowed to play baseball. And then he is throwing in the Kyle Phillips is a role player to this point? And that we are recruiting a 2018 kid? What does all that have to do with Perry (who has barely played and wasn't even eligible this fall) leaving?
This is how it came off to me as well. Like he has an axe to grind.

Crazy how only one man living in Chattanooga is the only one in the nation qualified to run our AD.

I'd have no issue with Greg Byrne...home run IMO. Just not looking forward to our "need a Tennessee man, by gawd...not an Arizona State or Mississippi State carpetbagger" inevitable posts for his tenure. :pinch:

While you have a point, it's an easy hire to make. Blackburn is good, he loves UT, and we need an AD in place very soon.

I'd probably hire him myself. I just don't agree with the one track philosophy - Blackburn or bust. I imagine there are many good candidates out there and I'll be looking at the resume of whoever is ultimately hired.

Sometimes the obvious path isn't the best path. Sometimes it is.

I'm not pointing out anything new here, but VQ mostly puts out info that is handed to them. And they are spoonfed some juicy information, because it seems that they have agreed to not report on some of the bad stuff in return. They don't have to do much digging. I think Brice was the only one who really tried to do some investigative journalism and he went out on a limb sometimes. You're going to be less reliable when you do that, but I wish more media in this town would follow suit.
If there is one thing this program needs its more media trying to dig up some dirt.......

The chancellor hired (Davenport) is absolutely qualified. Her experience got her the position. It was being noted mainly by the media that being a woman and potentially bringing a different perspective would only help the university's recent position with Title IX and just overall evolution of a large campus community like UT.

It is her job and responsibility to hire the AD and provost. I think Blackburn makes sense and we should go that route, but I also think that Blackburn would understand the chancellor's role and responsibility and understand that she deserves to have a say in the matter. The timing just sucks because it handicapping the football program.

Knowing UT as I do, there is very little question in my mind that Chancellor Davenport was told she had to support the choice of whoever became the AD; so she better be active in the search, interviews and hiring. CYA in the upper chambers. They always pass the buck to insulate themselves from negative exposure over there.

IF title IX is a driving factor Davenport may perceive Blackburn as the "old guard" and want to bring in a more progressive voice.

Agree - sometimes you do things differently. When you do not have anybody that's qualified in the circle or you are looking to do things much differently. That being said, if you actually knew David Blackburn like some of us do, you don't. You hire the man and thank him for being a loyal VFL despite everything. He would have been a far better AD than Hart or Hamilton had he been hired instead of Hart. Most of us semi-understood why they passed because of the lack of actual AD experience. So he goes and gets the experience, knocks it out of the park, and still wants the job even knowing what he knows.
