Regardless of the accuracy of player ratings by the services, the coaches still have to develop the players. Theoretically it would take longer to develop a 3* than a 4 or 5*. So if you take that 2014 list of 3 and 4* defenders - why aren't they ready to step in as quality subs, much less a starters? They had two years under Butch's system. The D position coaches have been the same for 4 seasons.

Is this not the issue when it comes to giving up record numbers to Kentucky, Mizzou, and Vandy? Injuries are injuries. But they had healthy guys that were not ready to compete that have been in the program for at least 2 years. We are not talking about a D that was just mediocre, they were atrocious. Just mailed it in, lost as last year's Easter eggs. That has to get seriously better or we will be talking about Butch's replacement this time next year.

Butch took a step back this year. On the field and, seemingly, in recruiting but here is why I'm still positive and not a negaVol (first time I've ever used that word Scotty's Flat Top) ~

I'm in sales. In 3 different jobs, I've taken a train wreck of a territory. It is usually easy to show growth in the first year or two, but eventually, you are going to take a step back. It happens to every salesman. IMO, that's where Butch is right now. The big question is ~ is he ready to take the next step? I think he is (this is where some if not most disagree) . Butch has made our APR better, our depth is better and we finally have gotten to redshirt some linemen. Like in sales, things that show improvement that do not show up in the final numbers immediately.

Butch's biggest area of concern is player development, which I thought he did well at Cincinnati and what keeps me positive. If that doesn't happen and happen soon, he'll be run out of here by all of us. I hope he turns it around.

To this point though, he's developed a territory like a very, very good salesman.

I made the choice a long time ago to quit listening to Butch but it's obvious he needs to shut up and quit doubling down on dumb. Come on dude, just quit saying stupid stuff. I know he doesn't believe the crap he says. He should know by now that we don't either.

He's too thin skinned and has a massive desire to be loved. He'd love for Vol fans to love him unconditionally. It'll never happen at any big school and I think it is driving him nuts.

I honestly think people would love him if he showed his personality in public. He tries so hard to stay on message with his cliches and sayings that people get annoyed and feel like they're listening to a robot.

Just be yourself man. People are drawn to realness.

Agree 100%. What you see in a Georgia locker room would go over huge with the fan base.

The Cincy fans came to this board when we hired him to tell us just how much they hated him. How tired they were of listening to him.

I remember that. The cliche's are tiresome, but I'm with Ziti. I ignore them. He still has done a great job of flipping the roster and has gotten is into the conversation of SEC East.

Can he develop? I saw it in his Cincy players. Will he let go of a few good friends that haven't done it here? Time will tell...

To be fair, they should want to put up with his cliches for the results he got. That program has gone so far down since he left.

Agree.

Although I will say that when you ain't winning enough it doesn't matter what you say. When you are winning you can overcome almost anything.

Butch works his tail off. That's one thing I absolutely love about him. He wants it. He lives it. And he gives every ounce of energy to making us a winner. That part about him I will always love.
