Well, I'd like to say I have a specific intended use, but I really don't. I think I'll use it for coyote hunting, but I think that's a utilitarian justification for the desire to own/build a rifle.
In relation to the other convo about ARs, I'm a big fan. I like the versatility of the platform, and I'm most familiar with it via my military service and current employment. I own an AR15 (5.56/.223), AR10 (7.62/.308), and the RPR in 6.5CM. I bought all of those, and now I want to build one. That's what leads me here with these questions.
I have a touch of OCD, and it just doesn't make sense to me to build/own another 5.56 or 7.62. So, I'm searching for a rifle that provides a balance of what I have and that is "justifiable" (loosely used word).
So, to dumb your info down to my level, I should really base my decision on desired range usage and a barrel length I'm willing to use, correct? I've watched several videos on YouTube about both rounds, and each video also has the 300BO in them. So, per my original question, what are your thoughts on the 300BO generally, and compared to the 6.5 and 6.8?
Any info would be appreciated.
The 300BO doesn't have the range of either of the aforementioned calibers. 300/BO really is perfect for suppressed, subsonic use. My advice is to build a lower first, they'll be the same for both calibers, then you can build yourself an upper in the one you suspect will be the caliber you prefer. Then you can build a second upper in the other caliber if you deem it necessary. You could even just change the barrel over if you didn't like the previous caliber and wanted to scrap it. Then you're only out a barrel.
Picked up a Ruger LC9S for the father in law for Christmas. Anyone here have one of these? It feels nice..that's about all I can say about it as of now.
I just ordered one yesterday. Sportsman's had a good sale.
I'm a big fan of them. Great gun for the price. Wish it came with 2 mags but that's minor.
Ok, after reading more about each round I think I've decided on the 6.8SPC. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind as I learn more, lol, but that's my choice for now. I'm tentatively eliminating the 6.5G because I have a 6.5CM, and they seem to have the same features: both considered long-range rounds. I'm also eliminating the 300BO because the range is really limited; therefore, I interpret that as limited use. I may be, probably am, misinterpreting that, but that's why it's out.
I'm choosing the 6.8SPC because I like the designed range, that 500 yd area, and I like that it fills the gap between the 5.56 and the 7.62. I can also easily add a 6.5G upper per your suggestion. I realize it will require a different bolt, magazine, and barrel; which leads me to this question for GrandVol.
Grand, in one of your responses you indicate the 6.5G is better suited for an 18" barrel; how would the 6.8SPC function in an 18" barrel? I'd like to use an 18" barrel for this build, but I don't want it to be inhibitive.
Any thoughts and opinions are appreciated.
There really is no pickup on significance in putting the 6.8 in an 18 inch barrel. It's designed to work out of 16 inch barrel maximum and you aren't going to gain a whole lot more velocity.
First Glock I've ever owned and it shot really well
Yea....the more I've read the more I've learned what you describe. I think the estimate is between 20-40 fps increase for the 18" barrel. That doesn't seem significant enough to add the weight. I'll definitely go with the 16". Thanks!
I think if you are looking at a 500 yard rifle, I'd take a second look at the 6.5. The 6.8 has enough to get out there, but honestly, the 6.5 will probably be a bit better at those ranges.
You seem to be accuracy driven, I'd think a 6.5 in a mid length gas system with an 18 inch barrel will serve you well. My ideal setup along those lines (something I may do) would be that upper with a Magpul UBR stock. You get the fixed stock feel, but adjustable for LOP. Toss in a Geiselle trigger and a decent scope and you've got a tack driver.
I have a 26 and love it. Shoots great. I have it for home defense but it's a little large to carry unless you're wearing a jacket. But if I need more than 15 9mm rounds then I'm really in the wrong place. I've found that Glocks bring quite a reaction from folks. They either love 'em or hate 'em.
I agree....Glocks are either well like or passionately hated...very, very few in between.
If you like your G26, you should check out the G43 for concealed carry. The single-stack design makes it a great conceal carry handgun. I let my wife carry mine, and I plan to get another.
I'm one of the in betweeners. I love the look and feel of the 42/43, but I wasn't a very accurate shooter with it, compared to the other pistols I own. I'll probably end up with a 43 here soon and give it another go.
My only real hang-up with the 6.5G, as uneducated and silly as it might seem, is the close correlation between it and the 6.5CM. I know they have differences, but I don't really see the benefit of having two rifles that are basically the same purpose: long-range. If the 6.5G is a 1000yd round and the 6.5CM is a 1000yd round then I'd have two with the same function, and I'd have to provide ammo for both. If you remember from my first post, my plan was to build the 6.5CM semi-auto, but decided against it based on the logic I've stated. That led me here looking for opinions on other rounds...
Again, that may be WAY off base due to my limited knowledge of the 6.5G, but that's what caused me to choose the 6.8SPC. If I'm wrong, please do feel free to educate me.

I'm looking at the 42 & 43. I like the power of the 9mm but the 42 is smaller and would be easier to carry, and it's $120 cheaper. Still waffling though, but I guess six 380 hollow points would do just fine if I really needed them.
