No AD hire till February according to Jimmy Hyams

Not to disagree just for the sake of it but saying DH is a failed AD is not held by everyone....Argue, scream, explain, pontificate, etc. but he's just not considered that by a lot of people...of course he's an easy target and I get that. But I dare say most, maybe not you, but most here have NO CLUE what an AD does on a daily basis...no idea what his morning to night schedule looks like or what decisions he actually makes....Anyways...AD's are usually overrated as to their effecting a program anywhoo...USUALLY!!!

I don't know what an AD does all day. I'd love to know he does from 8-12,let's say.

LWS do you know what the delay is for? It would seem that Butch needs guidance from the incoming AD right now. Basilio and Vol Colonel are still saying people want Gilbert and the longer this goes on, the less likely Blackburn is hired. Are they just way off base with that? Sorry, but many of us are very concerned given Tennessee's history with important hires. We are almost waiting for them to screw this up. Thanks for your insight!

Hooker asked both DB and Arth on his show today. Manning didn't know until t was done. DB is a straight shooter and a helluva interview.

It's been a long day but if memory serves me correctly, this was also shot down in the introductory press conference.

Hart had a task. Hart completed that task.

His hires have been underwhelming, but there is still time for Butch to pull out of this nosedive and I'm not sure we could have done better than Barnes at the time.
But we could have done better than Donnie Tyndall if they had done more than a 3 hour interview and instant hire without vetting him!

Dave Hart was brought in to manage the merger of athletic departments. That's over, so from that point of view, he's not necessarily a failure. From a perspective of hiring coaches, he's unquestionably a failure. Let's not pretend this is actually a retirement, either. It makes no sense to remove him to promote his assistant.

I did hear that his management of the Lady Vols debacle hurt him, that he didn't expect the backlash from it

and let's not forget how he took away the Defense from Dooley's teams, fired Wilcox and company and then hired Sal

I think the delay is for cosmetic reasons. There is really not a reason to rush.

1. One role the chancellor has is to hire the AD. The chancellor would likely have been involved with the committee from the BOT that conducted search but if not still would have executed interviews. From a perception basis, it looks really bad for the chancellor to be approved last Thursday and an AD announced this week. Would appear the chancellor had little to do with hiring someone that was going to be working for her.

So if no critical reason, no rush.

2. Butch is not ready to hire any coaches, give existing staff any contract changes (this is normally done in spring anyway I believe) or fire anyone. So he is not needing advice or guidance from his boss right now. (but believe me, he has had talks with his future boss). So again not a rush. Butch might not make any changes until after NSD even. That rumor is making rounds although I think things happen prior to that.

For those two reasons holding off until early or even mid January is fine. Several people are still promoting Gilbert (only chance he has is if David decides against taking job) inside the AD and outside the AD. Many, many more support DB.

I see no reason it won't be David and if Butch or anyone else needs to speak with him they can.

My thoughts

Sometimes I miss the blissfully unaware, pre-internet days when we had no freaking clue about who our position coaches were, let alone our Chancellor or who they might hire as AD. I also miss the days when we first learned the names of our incoming freshmen class when we bought our first game program of the season.

Larry, does waiting until January to make changes suggest that Helfrich to UT is unlikely considering that he has several suitors pursuing him right now? Obviously, I'm connecting a lot of dots there. Just curious.

It's honestly no suprise Tennessee is where it's at with this administration. I understand conducting a thorough search, even though Blackburn seems like the easy, logical choice. But delaying it until February is a joke. I hope he is wrong. He's been wrong many times before.

This administration is trying to run Tennessee like an Ivy League school, and that's not what we are. We're a great southern, public University in the SEC who plays a little football in between classes. Our Vols are our life. Make Tennessee Great Again!
Go to class a little in between football games is more accurate!

Amen. Best post on here in a long time. :good!:

AMEN to this! Still, I subject myself to the VN crazy-fest (no offense, FREAK)! :hi:

I'd get up early to go buy the USA Today to see which big time recruits we nabbed. There was the huge excitement of the unknown. The KNS and (ughh) the Tennesseean had nice little tidbits on other recruits we brought in. When Johnny went heavy on the OL recruiting in 87 (resulting in our best era IMO), I remember the rumblings of "where are our QBs and WRs?" (caveman Negavols :)). You really didn't have a complete idea of your recruiting class until the preseason magazines got into the new stands.

That is certainly possible. who is pursuing him? Saw his name attached to LSU but outside that one not sure I've seen anything else linking him to someone. LSU filled their spot

Would seem to me that another major program would have to make a coordinator change (TN included) for him to have a landing spot. Not any major programs left with an OC opening at the moment that I know of. Not sure who Pitt replaced Canada with or if they even have.

I had a friend (who is no longer with us) who got to sit in Fulmer's War Room. He would email me as LOIs came in. I would email friends. Remember a lot of who is that? when we signed Ulysses Alexander.. he was my contact there for many years

Don't believe Pitt has replaced yet.. don't think they are a threat.

I think the guys that have been rumored are UT bound. Seems to have been set for several weeks now.
