I think you were driving at 'they make money because they don't make a habit of donating millions on top of whatever they already give just to fire coaches. Instead, they spend it on their business and make wise choices'.
Also, as for the general discussion in this thread, I can't wrap my mind around some people actually believing that the high level donors expect ANY sort of return on their money just because UT Football is "doing good".
That is too stupid for words.
You're probably right. Big businesses don't look for ANY edge possible to help them be more successful(make more money). They just stumble around and are just lucky when things goes well for them. No thought about ROI, certainly not when it comes to donations. Strategic donations could never benefit a business and they would never plan ANY benefits from said donations, that would be stupid on their part. Being stupid and acting all willy nilly with their millions is how most millionaires and billionaires got what they got.
Nah, your line of thinking is much more real world. Rich people getting richer just by accident.
they give money to schools because they care about the schools. They get involved in personal decisions because they think they know best for the school / athletic program. They assist in getting people in place so they can remain involved in what goes on. They lobby to be the man who is most influential. That has gone on forever. Its not about return on money as far as involvement but it is about power and ego.
I'm sure I misunderstood what behr was getting at. Still may not have addressed
Good grief man, you took what I said to mean "rich people get richer just by accident"?
Let's start over. Maybe I over simplified what you said.
The way I took it, you meant Joe Donor donates $1M to UT, and could see some kind of return on that donation because sales of his widgets were up due to UT's success acting as some sort of stimulus.
I just meant I highly doubt the leaders/founders of a multi-billion dollar businesses with operations all over the country and in some cases, the world, donate because they think it will somehow, someway see a return on it.
Is it possible they see some kind of "return"? Sure. I just doubt its within the top 10 or 15 reasons they cut a check.
That's correct and that's a Team with more coaching changes than hiTllary changes lies.
alaBubba could probably beat the browns, LOL!
He's also helping fund his sons political career which isn't cheap.
Just because he wasted over $1 Billion on a NFL team is even more reason he won't want to throw more HUGE $$$ at our footVol Team.
If our big boosters wanted to throw that kind of HUGE $$$ around we would never have hired buTch and we'd have a HC earning $6 Million or more per year right now.
Please attempt to Think and engage brain before posting my friend.
This isn't la la land, this is reality.
VFL...GBO!!!

So what are you saying, it's not too stupid for words that some big donors may have an expectation that if the Vols do better it could benefit their business? Or is it still too stupid for words to even bring that up as a reason even if it's 10-15 down on the list.
LWS Basilio is saying that Jon Gilbert is gaining momentum again dear god! How can the university be this stupid when the perfect hire is standing right in front of them. Please tell me you still feel confident about Blackburn. Thanks for your info.
I ask this in all seriousness....is it safe to say our biggest donor is Haslam? My fear is that guys like that pull too many strings at our school. Just because you run an extremely successful business doesn't mean you know how to run an NFL team much less rebuild a college program. Zero wins so this season, Johnny Manzel, RGIII..... You appease big donors but is it also a negative?

Most of you will not recognize my poster name, and I will not explain where my information comes from. So take it as you will. A team has been put together for a coaching search, assistant coaches or whatever is needed. Certain critiriea must be meet to keep it as assistants only. That said expect 3 to 5 changes made in the coaching staff after tha Music City Bowl. Also there will be tricks in both the offense and defense, some not noticeable to untrained eye.

Man I take a week or so away from VN and holy smokes there is a lot of banter goin on. Some of which I agree and some totally off base.
As a larger donor (6 figures a year and with non cash donations of other things over 7 figures) I can tell you I do this purely for a few reasons.
1. Access to premium seating and parking both home and away. This includes access to players, coaches, and special events.
2. Incredible tax benefits while gaining facility use.
3. Anything that helps or contributes to the well being of knoxville and the state of tn (which our football program has a tremendous effect on the local economy) I am all for and will gladly support.
4. The university was near and dear to my old man...he was deeply involved as a donor and behind the scenes guy (I'll leave that to your own interpretation) in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. I went to every home game and countless away games with him. To this day I still have the seats that I used to sit in with him growing up as a kid...so he instilled it in me from the moment I was born.
I will say on the whole I don't agree that most mega donors do things to benefit their own business certainly there are some local guys who take that into account considering the write off for some of the things they do.
At least that is my opinion and gives you all a little background as to why this place is so special to me and why I am involved on many levels.
