Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXX

During a recent visit, a college football source said it appeared as if everyone in the building was in the dumps.

“I think that place can be so great. I really do.” he said. “But it just looked like everyone there had been punched right in the face. It was bad.”

Wow, that's shocking. A team that had playoff hopes and ended up 8-4 looked downtrodden? ROTTEN CULTURE! FAHR JONES.

The source added that Jones tendency to bicker with reporters is indicative of a coach unsure of himself and his position.

“Why would you lecture the media?” the source said. “You can’t have a slogan that says ‘Own It’ and then not own it when it comes time. People will follow true leaders through brick walls, but if you talk and don’t back it up, you turn over your shoulder and no one is there.”

Nice of you to give your buddy Travis a quote, Wes Rucker.

“Certain guys had more of a voice than they deserve,” a source close to the team said. “Certain guys would become team captains even though they didn’t earn it. When that happens, it dissolves trust the rest of the team has in you.”

Don't think there's any question that all four of the team captains 100% deserved it.

Sensing the vibe put off by the veterans, sources indicated that some freshmen, including ones getting reps, were lackadaisical in their effort to learn. A coach said one freshman, who played a lot of snaps, was unable to recognize basic scheme principles because of a lack of work ethic.

Sure, blame the coaches for one freshman being lazy on the field.

Couldn't let Tennessee get too much good press after landing Trey Smith. Well done, Mr. Terry.

Lots of "unnamed sources"

For some reason, the media that comes from this area think the only way they can gain credibility is by ripping their own.

I noticed that too. Although much of it rings true, anyone who spent a couple hours reading VN could have written that and attributed the info to a source within the AD.

Absolutely no doubt that is where that came from.

Using a quote from an unnamed source to title your article = sensationalism and irresponsible

In other words, it makes it a hit piece

I don't know. It's a dilemma. Attributing a quote to a screen name in the FF has its downside too.

The trajectory to a flash in the pan unsustained championship and that to building "9 strong" depth to a championship are to different ascents. There are vested interest against Jones establishing a deep culture of winning and all these pesky bandits are appearing now to derail the building of a broad spectrum foundation. While it is true that Jones is at a cross-roads these narratives are more about stopping Tennessee than anything else. Be wary of buying in. The interests that promote them oppose dominance in Knoxville.

Couldn't help but believe that the article was written with a bit of an agenda. It seemed like the author started with his own conclusion and primarily sought "sources" to fit and strengthen the message. But, that is JMO.

The media will always go for the low-hanging fruit. Butch has few friends in the fanbase right now, so they can publish an article loaded with quotes from unnamed sources and everybody will eat it up.

There's nothing 'inside' about this article. All of the points are spun from things we already knew. All of the quotes are ideas that I could find on VN, worded to make them sound as if they come from somebody with the scoop. A VN poster can technically be considered a "Tennessee source," right?

This is just an attempt to cash in on the unrest of the Vol fanbase, IMO.

There is no doubt that there were issues. However, it is interesting that all of the negative comments come from unnamed sources, and all the positive comments come from a named former player. Whether it happened or not, what current AD administrator would make such comments? It doesn't help anyone right now.

Edit: looks like I got Ziti'd. But that was the first thing I thought when reading it.

The truth is probably reflected by that article to some degree. Maybe hiring a proven OC with a similar offensive philosophy is the right way for Butch to move from meddling head coach to CEO head coach. Can he do it?

Weren't they 0.500 this year?

Yeah 6-6 I think but that was a team with one win the year before. To make them bowl eligible in year one and you go toe to toe at Houston and at South Florida giving both a run for their money until depth comes into play. Frost is going to be really really good. I love his style too. It wasn't your typical Pac 12 guy coming in he brought defense with him probably thhe Nebraska background helps there. He has been around some top notch guys on both sides of the ball on his playing and coaching career.

That 247 piece has all the markings of "fake news": unattributed sources, publisher with an agenda, comments closed.

How's this for a headline: Saben and Meyer both lose to Butch Jones' Tennessee in recruiting battle for #1 OL recruit, Trey Smith. That sounds like a better story to me right now. The whole attack Butch and Tennessee football thing was more of a last week kind of story. Timing is everything.

I am putting in my resume for writing. An unnamed source close to the program said "Butch jones is destroying his rep with area high schools with giving out so many git shirts"

Hell I could make so much bs up I would never lose an argument around here. Lol

Agreed. I'm not back on the Jones bandwagon by any means, but this article feels stale.

What are some of the 247 discussions of that story... Don't have an account so can't read them

Two weeks ago everyone here would agree with the article and still be carrying pitch forks.

Buncha softies :)
