Tidbit from just a vol

I thought Butch was under contract thru 2020. I doubt very seriously Tennessee wants to get back into paying coaches buyout money. Just finished paying Dooley his 102K per month.

Butch is not going anywhere anytime soon.

He won't be the coach at Tennessee in 2018.

In the Music City, yes. It was a strange move. Sounds like it was more personality related than football related. He had them in back to back bowl since the early 90s.

Agree. Sounds like something fishy happened.

There will almost certainly be a shared OC position with DeBord coaching the OL and a high profile QB coach. I know that there already has been an informal 3rd party conversation with Helfrich and Applewhite. I believe that both of them would be open to the CO OC idea.

This would be a step in the right direction.

Wasn't there someone connected to the program say on here that there's already been some high profile guys contact Butch about coming and being an assistant here? These statements would match up

Why would it take Butch Jones 4 years to decide on an overhaul of position coach changes and adding a QB coach?

Slow learner?

I would find that suspect that someone report that high level assistants would want to come here under Butch. Just my IMO. I have a hard time seeing that.

This sounds like a giant spin job; funny that he's "full go" after trying to find a new spot and nobody apparently wanted him.

I mean I get it, he's the coach and I hope for our sakes he works out, but I'm not buying this sudden "all in" stuff.

After calming down from Saturday night, I think the OP is correct that it wouldn't be good if Jones left now. There just doesn't seem to be anybody viable out there that would be a sure-fire bet to go better than 8-4. I am NOT a Butch fan, but I do think he's the best option we have for next year.

If things go south, there will hopefully be better options than there were this year. I mean, think about it - who is everyone clamoring for... I've seen PJ Fleck, Bobby Petrino, and Dan Mullen as options even approaching the realm of reality. That's going to be our home run hire to do significantly better than Butch? Of course, I've also seen Pete Carroll, Jon Gruden, and Art Briles, all of whom are laughable. Herman was the only home run hire this year, and he's gone. When LSU gets rid of Les Miles and settles for Ed Orgeron, you know the coaching prospect well is pretty dry.

Having said that, maybe we actually do have a surprise season next year and we start trending up again. It would be best if Butch actually is the answer here and we don't have to go through another coaching transition. I doubt it (seriously doubt it), but here's hoping!

JAV is well connected and dropped this off today

First, from what I've been told, Butch Jones is a full go at Tennessee. He has kicked the tires at Purdue but there's really no interest there from either side. He's told multiple people that he knows that his best opportunity is the one he already has. I'm sure that there will be more rumors and tire kicking but there's very little chance that he will go elsewhere.

I believe that you will see a better close to recruiting than you might expect and a renewed sense of urgency from the top down. I know that CBJ has told people that he's already reevaluated some of the changes that he made this year and has identified what he sees as success and failure and is already working on a plan for 2017.
Whatever you might think of him, no one works harder than Butch Jones. He is extremely driven.

I also believe, based on several conversations, that CBJ is very serious about bringing in highly regarded assistants to replace anyone who leaves. There will almost certainly be a shared OC position with DeBord coaching the OL and a high profile QB coach. I know that there already has been an informal 3rd party conversation with Helfrich and Applewhite. I believe that both of them would be open to the CO OC idea.

Bob Shoop will be the DC at Tennessee next year. CBJ doesn't want to start over again and Shoop knows that his reputation took a bit of a hit this year. He loves living in Tennessee and he's excited about what can be done with some changes next season.

I've been doubtful about JG as a passer because I've seen him be very inconsistent in that department. Someone I trust very much has relayed to me that he has made a huge leap in the last couple of months specifically. He's really worked very hard to learn the offense and has looked very confident. He's always been an electric runner and now he's rounding into form as a passer. I love QD but if JG keeps improving, especially with a really good QB coach, he's most likely going to be the man.

I've been critical of CBJ this year and I have my doubts still. However, he is the absolute best option for Tennessee for the next couple of years. The worst thing that could happen is for him to leave voluntarily or involuntarily. There isn't anyone who is a viable, better option than Butch right now. No one knows how things will play out. Those who are comparing him to Dooley are foolish and those longing for Kiffin are deluding themselves. The proof will be in the next few weeks as to how the rest of CBJ's tenure will go here. If Bob Shoop is allowed to get coaches of his own choosing and CBJ can attract a young, high profile QB coach, I'll see that as a huge step forward in the evolution of Butch Jones."

I believe that is correct

The stick is a dump truck full of $$.

In some cases. Others its the reputation of the coach that is trying to bring you in. Thats part of the reason why we have some of the assistants we currently have.

Why would it take Butch Jones 4 years to decide on an overhaul of position coach changes and adding a QB coach?

Butch brought a loyal cadre of known commodities with him to rebuild a dumpster fire program. In 2013, few were interested in a cash-poor P5 program playing in the cellar of their conference. The outlook has changed with the Vols 2015 success and the athletic department's somewhat healthier balance sheet.

Do you recall the Vols playing the Hoosiers in the Peach Bowl (1988?)?

Yeah, Anthony Miller was uncoverable, Reggie Cobb had a great game - and I can't believe they played a bowl game in Fulton County Stadium.

I think it is interesting that if Florida loses to bama on Saturday, UT will finish the year ahead of fl in the East and will be tied for second best team in the SEC. Not too shabby considering who is in first place.

Doesn't change my position on his abilities and my cheering for the team. Butch is not the team but believe he holds them back. Will just have to be patient.

Butch is part if the team as long as he is the HC. United we should stand and give our all for the program.

Once he is gone all bets are off.

Get it together Butch!

Go Vols!

no we won't, Florida went 6-2 in the SEC, Butch went 4-4.

We are not even close the 2nd best team in the SEC.

How can anyone see this as something other than positive for the program.
