Hart was brought in to be a hatchet man. His mandate was to combine athletic depts, reduce head count and trim fat to improve the bottom line. They knew it wouldn't be popular and nobody else wanted to do it. He did what he was hired to do, but he made a lot of enemies.

Get ready for the "UT ain't no akadeemik skool and ne'er will bee" type of posts. But I agree with you. Push for greatness in both. He football team wouldn't be here if it were for the university having an academic side.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I wrote a letter to the editor to the student paper while at UT back around 1999 or 2000. It was in response to the Linda Bensel Myers investigation. I stated then again that a university can indeed be a great academic institution along with having great athletic programs. They can co-exist.

The only concern I have is transforming our school into a "research" institution. UT was started for the people of TN and to produce great professionals for the real world. Research is great, but it shouldn't be our primary focus. The focus is to educate out state for a productive work force.

Michigan is proof enough that athletics can be great at a research school.

Same with Stanford

There is nothing wrong with research, IMO. Actually, I am performing it right now at UT as I type this post. It is when you make it the only thing you focus on is when you will lose and see huge declines in everything else. Academics is not just about research. It isn't just about going into the classroom. Without research we wouldn't have a classroom. And without a classroom we wouldn't have research. They go hand in hand. And the AD definitely helps with bringing in money. So focus on all and not 1 which is what Cheek didn't do.

I would have rather lost to the Sun Belt team on our schedule than Vanderbilt. Honestly. I'd be surprised if any Nashville Vol fan felt differently.

I agree with that.

The worst part is, their fan, or fans?, actually believe now that they are a better program than us.

I had a vandy fan tell me that he "expected" to win Saturday (not sure I believe that but...) and then pointed out that looking back over the last 5 years they are 3-2 against us. Made me sick.

Yes, I think there's no doubt he's a lame duck coach whether his ticket out of town is a pink slip or a job offer.

Right now we need to rally behind Butch to have a great "farewell season" at Tennessee. Let him stock the cupboard a bit more with recruits, go win 8-10 games in 2017, and then let another team take him off our hands. Use the buyout money (whether it's paid in full or negotiated down) to go get a proven coach.

Oh, and use the advance warning that he's either getting fired or leaving on his own in roughly 365 days and start putting out feelers to other coaches ASAP. No risk in pissing off Butch knowing that he's likely to leave anyway.

Of course, the Tennessee thing would be for Butch to have a monster season with JG at QB, win 11-12 games, and then they both leave for UCLA or something together.

Uh, no. He could have success and stay. What's with this get rid of Butch succeed or fail mentality?

We've been through this turnover with the academic administration more so than even football coaches over the last 20 years. Every time a Chancellor, or President up until a few years ago, is hell bent on turning UT into a "world class research institution," a red flag goes up. I want to be world class as much as anyone, but there's something to be said against forcing something that goes against your DNA.

Anyone else think the month of December will be really good for Cam Sutton? He hasn't looked great since he came back from injury; I'm hoping he will look much improved in his final game at UT.

I can't believe his name doesn't get brought up more in searches.

My 3 names on a realistic board would be... Schiano, Mullen and Fedora

Has it been long enough now that Tressel could return to coaching? He certainly was successful at Ohio State. Not that I think Butch is going anywhere. Just curious.

I think it's pretty clear that he doesn't want to be here anymore. Would have likely jumped ship with a 9-3 regular season, but the Vandy loss made him a much less attractive candidate.

I thought about him as well. His show cause should have expired by now I would think

It is clear that there are a lot of hard feelings right now, but I don't think one can necessarily count on them persisting. We are talking about at the end of next season. Winning would change many things.

Exactly. The east is there for the taking again next year.

It should belong to either us or uga imo, and if JG is the real deal, I think we'd have an argument to be considered the favorite.

Florida will take a step back in talent.

All the bottom 4 will be at least somewhat decent and won't be an easy W, but we will be better than all of them.

We get uga at home.

Our west draws are ridiculous , as always. But we do get LSU in Knoxville at least. Who knows.

His show cause expires in December. But he has expressed adamantly that he is happy as the president of Youngstown State and has no interest in returning to coaching.

Thanks for the info. Wasn't aware of that.

I will point out, however, that Saban said he was NOT going to coach at alabama.
