That's not really owning it. He came out later (after he got backlash from fans, media, even some former players) and said their expectations are championships. But he obviously was too prideful and tone deaf to throw the fans a bone and say "We are disappointed, but we did this to ourselves. We had a chance to make win the east two weeks ago and failed. But I'm still proud of our guys and we still have a lot to play for"

An important part of being a leader (being a champion of life, if you will) is being able to face and admit your own failures and disappointment. Butch has shown that his ego is too big to be capable of that. Let's see how he opened his press conference the monday after the USCe loss:




C'mon man. I get taking pride in your accomplishments, but this is begging to be praised for something that is expected to be your floor. I hate UF and Tim Tebow as much as the next Vol fan, but let's contrast what he (as a twenty-somthing, no mind you) said after an unacceptable and disappointing loss:




THAT is how you own expectations. UT fans would rally behind Butch if he could swallow his pride, have some humility, and say something like this after he disappoints. They would love him for it.

Instead he deflects and whines about negativity.

The job this staff has done is amazing. And the fan base is nuts.

From where we were to were we are is unreal.

People lose it in the coach because he is a robot and completely full of crap publicly.

They guy pulled us up from the ashes and we are competing again. We go into every game thinking we can win.

I remember years just hoping for that 6th win so we could watch one more game.

He knows he blew it this year but he has us back. It is that simple.

Now his job is to keep tweaking until he finds that right combo of coaches and players.

Tough job. I am proud of this team.

Yes sir, and the local media a d guys on volquest and 24/7 need to keep their mouths shut on internal issues and stop starting bull**** rumors.

Good post SBV. Everybody is pissed. We blew the east. But there's a big difference in using it as a strike against Butch and wanting to completely cash out.

He's a top 3 coach in college football for several reasons and "in-game" management isn't one of them. I believe Urban is the best recruiter in the game. I believe urban is top 5 when it comes to game planning. I believe Urban is top 2 when it comes to hiring very talented assistants and letting them work. Those three areas are why he is among the best at his profession. His weakness however becomes exposed when he loses his Dan Mullen or Tom Herman. Urban needs a top tier OC to win consistently. He doesn't have that now. When he lacks the top end OC he tends to lose games that he shouldn't and his teams perform poorly when the other team responds to their quick starts. Penn State hung around and won. His team struggled against 3 other opponents this year that made adjustments in game and Urban couldn't. This also happened to him at Florida when Mullen left.

Ohio State is winning this year on their superior talent and Urbans ability to game plan prior to kick off. If a lack of execution happens early in the game with Ohio State they are extremely beatable. Better get them now before he finds his next Herman.

I'm a little behind in this thread but this is exactly how I feel about urbs. I will add that having a good QB fit for his offense has been critical for him too. News flash I know.
