If Butch left, the media would absolutely roast Tennessee. Any criticism of him would turn into effusive praise ("he brought UT back to relevance!") and the current heat he's feeling would be transferred to the fans and the AD.

Cue articles and soundbites from Andy Staples, Kirk Herbstreit, and their peers about how Tennessee is toxic and doesn't set coaches up to succeed.

Just so I know, did Kurt and Luke recruit well here?

They did fine with Fulmer closing. And Im not saying they would be liabilities. They are good coaches. But with who Cutcliffe would have been handcuffed into keeping, I think it would have made more sense to bring in more guys with the reputation of stone cold recruiters. This is JMO, so you'll have to take it as that. The scenario fell through, so we can go round and round on it, but we will literally never know how it would have unfolded.

Again, I agree that regardless of what happened with who Cutcliffe wanted to bring, we would have been in much better shape with him than Dooley.

That is exactly what would happen

Wonder if he talks much to Cuonzo. Cuonzo could tell him how miserable it was to make one of the programs 7 alltime sweet sixteen runs.

Cuonzo deserved all the crap he got IMO. One lucky postseason run doesn't excuse years of mediocre ball and average recruiting. CBJ had a much tougher task and has done a far better job.

And Dark Ages Round 2 here we go! If Butch is not here next year whether it is him walking away or getting canned, which I don't think either will happen, no one of any elite coaching substance would touch this program with a 39.5 ft. pole.
