I'd take Gruden over Butch at this point.

Gruden knows his X and Os. He would basically bring the best game plan and scheme week by week. I'd be confident that we would bring our best A game on a weekly basis.

He would maximize and play his best players NOT based on seniority. (See Kamara and Kelly)

He would surround himself with quality assistant coaches who know how to develop and recruit the style of players to fit his scheme.

CBJ is not able to do that. To get to the next level and win games based on equal talent, that is the difference.

This is the kind of Head coach we need at Tennessee and we need to be willing to pay the big bucks.

Tennessee is in a much better place and position to attract a high level coach thanks to CBJ. Based on his body of work at Tenneseee, don't see him getting better than 9-3/8-4 seasons and that is when the SEC East has been down for the past few years. He was exactly the HC we needed and one of the only ones willing to come and work his ass off to get out of the Dooley years.

I think next year will be his last at UT.

Only major hang up at this point is the AD situation and CBJs contract.

Lol I don't think the same can be said with me. At least here on VN :eek:lol:
You've never pulled my chain or rubbed me the wrong way Catbone. I always respect your posts. You have never tried to instigate an argument with me while a select few others that's all they want to do.

LWS on Butch and ND if they fire Kelly:

there is no doubt Butch would be on the phone calling them the moment it was announced.

I'm real doubtful that ND would pursue a Kelly protege though.. I suspect they would want someone with a different philosophy

One foot out is NOT what we need

Did LWS add the part about butch being a Kelly protégé? If so that proves he doesn't have any actual info in this situation. Butch and Kelly have never coached together

He isn't a Kelly protege. He just likes to follow Kelly wherever he leaves

It's disappointing to read thru some of this and see people pointing to 9-3 and asking would we take that. Record WITHOUT context

Texas A&M and South Carolina shouldnot have been losses

Period.

Alabama is the only "Loss" that is some what acceptable even tho you still can't convince me they are THAT much better than us even down the personnel we were down.

9-3 with losses to teams who out manned us , I can deal with

There is not a team on our schedule other than Bama with equal talent

That's the reality.
There's something missing with our teams, if it's not talent, then what?

Should Butch be fired as of today, probably not.
If he doesn't make any changes to his staff I will have many worries about next season. MANY!

If he decides to take a lateral move and leave, I wouldn't be writhing around in pain. We'll be fine. We have resources and a lot in the pantry and cupboard to move forward.

I am very concerned that he doesn't know how to handle a team and especially a team with expectations.
It's a lot easier to win 7 games when you're coming off the Dooley years.

It's almost criminal how little Alvin Kamara was used before Hurd went out. Going back to last year, you could see he absolutely changes the game.

Just ask yourself how many great coaches (harbaugh, Shaw, Meyer, Satan , Jimbo, et al...) would have had a talent like that and not maximized their potential . All of those guys would have had Kamara with around 20 plus touches, lining up all over, taking advantage of match ups

Our league is a Line of scrimmage and a match up game, how many times can you say we out matched our opposing coach with situational football (especially on offense)

When the talent is about even, when and where do we create wins for our special players?

I totally rambled on and typed way too much. :hi:

Id say that the top 4 teams in the SEC talent wise are Bama , UGA, LSU, and Texas A & M...Bama being the only one in the SEC that doesnt have to have a qb carry the team.
IMO everyone discounts the equality among every team. 7 on 7 tournaments, year round training and everyone being on tv has equaled the playing field for teams.
Replacing a coach every 4 years imo is not the answer and i am personally willing to ride this Butch train as long as it goes. Hell you never know but this could have been our 1997 year.

Ok, so if everyone is so anxious to see butch leave, who does ut realistically have a shot at? Or should I say, who does the media want since they continue to let out bull**** rumors that shouldn't be let out

I can understand people that give a lot of money wanting to have a say so but there are some decisions they need to stay out of and this is one of them. Anyone but Blackburn for AD is a travesty. You would think he would care about what the school needs and not who will suck his dong more

I prefer just having a new QB coach that calls plays along with a new LB and CB coach.

If Butch were to walk, then it would not suprise me at all to see a move made for Cutcliffe. It would actually be a good time for it with talent in place.

When I asked if he was bothered enough to leave like Cuonzo

If he really thinks that, he might be willing to make a move no matter the financial hit to avoid having fired on a resume.

all this just my opinion BTW

We are more talented than LSU and A&M. 2 deep wise, and at equal are better than UGA

You must be a miserable person to be around. Butch deserves respect at this point. Fantastic coach? No, still work in progress. Terrible coach? That's simply the ramblings of an overly negative poster.

When you see what guys like Kamara and Dobbs do in the NFL and how we weren't able to do more with them here at Tennessee, it'll be an indictment of Butch Jones.

Sorta like how Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry dominating in the NFL is an indictment of Les Miles and his horrible offensive scheme.

I expect we'll see the same with Butch Jones. His reign will produce many great NFL players but no rings cause he's a terrible in-game coach.

I know we all joked about Tennessee screwing up this AD hire and now it appears that is what is going to happen. What the hell has Gilbert done to deserve this job above Blackburn? The basketball hires alone that Gilbert handled should disqualify him. Did he not have a big part in Tyndall? We all know how that ended. He has never been an AD and Tennessee is going to hand him the keys over a man who LOVES this university and has done nothing but great things at UTC. But that's how things are done here. I hope Gilbert would do a fantastic job and prove me wrong but my goodness. When is Tennessee going to welcome back some people who truly care about this university.

Makes firing hart completely pointless

Can't really argue with that if it turns out that way
