And there's nothing wrong with that. Sometimes- most of the time- coaches hit their ceiling. If Butch were to move on after this year, I think you'd call his tenure a success. Sometimes the coach that pulls you out of the dregs isn't the same one that will lead you to a championship.

A bit of an oversimplification, but that was a factor in replacing Majors with Fulmer. Many other factors though.

The problem with this scenario is it requires Butch to leave on his own and not get fired. If he were to be fired after a 10-3 season, especially by a new AD, no one, I mean no one would want to come here. The new AD would have to have a future hall of fame coach in his pocket ready to start immediately to be remotely confident he could work this through the boosters and board successfully. With the other big name schools out there looking for coaches, the chances he would have someone are pretty slim.

Now, he could quit or get hired by another school who recognizes what he's done and needs a rebuild. But the chances of that are pretty slim also.

So, like him or not, he's here for at least one more season, probably a minimum of two. They will do their end of season review, replace some assistants, finish up the recruiting class and start working on team 121.

Riot if he isn't 1st team SEC.

He is legit DPOTY IMO.

The real travesty is jabrill peppers.

HE IS HOT SMOKING GARBAGE.
He does Nothing on defense. Lines up at will and is often unblocked

When he is blocked he gets smoked

He is thee most overrated college football player I have ever seen.

Who? Miles?

Nope, think the list of good candidates will be long given they only have 2 - 3 tough games a year (depending how good UF is), program reputation, and fertile recruiting ground. They love offense so it will be an offensive minded coach (again imo)

if ND makes a move, would CBJ be in play for them? Could be a good fit and gets him closer to Midwestern roots. Think he underestimated the SEC and the culture that surrounds our Saturday religion:)

When Bama fired Mike Shula, they were searching for their fourth coach in six years. They hired Nick Saban. When Shula was hired, Bama was a mess and Shula was brought in to bring stability to a troubled program. He did that. Saban was hired to take the program to the next level and win championships.

If CBJ and UT decide to part ways at some point, it's ridiculous to say that UT can't do exactly what Bama did-- go out and find a coach to take the program to the next level and win championships. Some people think CBJ could be that guy; others think he's not. Either way, UT is, and will continue to be, a desirable destination.

Not sure we can be compared to Bama. I don't believe we recruit the same way. If we did, we would be much further along. Have we ever paid $250K for a player? I believe it was proven they did.

Beat Vandy and win the bowl game.

Extend Butch's contract. Has to be done for recruiting and staff hiring purposes. 10-3 will make it easy to do so. 9-4 less so.

Fire any assistants who aren't performing. 4 years of evaluation is long enough to know whether guys are elite recruiters and coaches.

Whether it's Hart or Blackburn on the job, give Butch the green light and financial backing to make the best staff hires possible. And get away from the Central Michigan coaching bubble.

No need to extend Butch this season. He's contracted through 2020 already!

Give him a bump in pay, sure. But not an extension.

Sure, if you want another year with our current crop of assistants or replacements who are even worse. No contract extension and a new AD coming in will make guys very hesitant to move to Knoxville for what might be a year one gig.

Plus, failing to "reward' Butch for 10-3 and a possible Sugar Bowl appearance would be a bad look given where we were when he took over.

He's got three years left on his contract! Good assistants have gone to coaching staffs in much more precarious positions.

It's not at all. Zook didn't have to build anything. But it's what our fans do.

I said he rebuilt our roster & did a good job doing it.

This year is a failure based on expectations though. Unless our expectations have shifted to 8-9 wins with a chance at 10 every few years. Which is acceptable for wayyyyy too many of our fans.

It's not acceptable to anyone in the SEC except Vandy, UK, and Mississippi State. Why should it be for us, who historically is a very good program?

I think Butch can and will win championships here at UT, but he has to continue to recruit at a high level here in order to do it. Top 10-15 classes won't cut it here. We need top 5 classes here in order to win the SEC and make it to a playoff.
