It's a business decision. They sell out pretty much regardless. No need to spend that extra $2M when your revenue stream is pretty much maxed out.
I know I'm late to this discussion but stadium attendance is only one part of the revenue stream, so that being maxed out doesn't preclude the university from making more money. Every time I see a stupid alabubba "a" on the back of a car it reminds me how much money that program is raking in since saban took over. They're making an absolute killing of merchandise and the like.
