Butch should be Dabo Swinney 2.0. Get good coordinators and get out of the way.

Funny thing is we watched Derek Dooley outcoach Butch when we played Cincinnati his second year at UT. That Tennessee team was only loaded in the passing game. Butch got clearly outcoached because the talent gap wasn't enormous at all.

This is feels like Dooley all over for me. I don't see recruiting going crazy after this season and I don't think Butch can win a natty. If he can't win a natty here he needs to let someone else coach who can. Beating Florida wasn't an accomplishment. He should've beat them three years straight. This team losing like they did last year should've been on the warpath.

Our best game was Texas A&M. IMO And we were sloppy in that. I'm just watching the Vols play until I hear some major news. I have ZERO expectations for this team performance wise.

LMFAO Hurd wants a long career in the NFL. This attitude coming public kills his chances of being drafted. Why the hell would a Gm sign this mediocre RB with an attitude problem when there is a **** ton of rbs that don't have locker room issues. Dudes career is done.

Honestly, too much smoke has surrounded Hurd ever since his 'relative' came on here throwing out drama and transfer rumors before last year's bowl game. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he weren't a large part of the problem on the offense.

I haven't wanted to believe it and have defended him from a lot but it spoke volumes that he wasn't elected a captain by his teammates, the noise grew louder after whatever happened at UGA and his 'off week' against TAMU, and it's getting to the point of a sonic boom after watching how he's played all year. He isn't the same player he was and hasn't played like it all year while the other RBs have been embarrassingly good when they've had their chances.

The situation with him reminds me of how North was last season. North went through the motions and though he was injured there was a good amount of smoke surrounding how absent he was in games (he was absent even when he was on the field). The coaches never quite gave up on him but we might've been better off if we had.

I feel like the same may be happening with Hurd but to their credit they seem to be doing a good deal more about it this time although it's a damn shame that Kamara got injured as that's derailed our ability to be less dependent on a player who is either injured, checked out mentally, or just going through the motions pre-draft. However, Kelly is more than capable of taking up the slack. We just need CFA or someone else to step up and become the a reliable backup.

Prof, for Jalen sake, I hope 74 is full of crap. If he's not, he has exposed dirty laundry that will create a locker room red flag for nfl teams. He has lost Jalen money regardless but if Jones and coaches can debunk the rumors then he still has a chance.

RB is the last position to have these problems right now in the nfl. Value of the RB is down and there are plenty that are just has talented of not more without the attitude.

"I think most people knew when they saw us running out of the I in the bowl game what we were doing/ trying. I just wish that they would have been honest with him if they never planned on deviating from their scheme - ever."

-Vol74 in ff

So butch is a liar? Nice.

well, it's no secret that Butch has stretched the truth (at least to fans and media). This is reminding me of North, except for the Uncle who makes Hurd sound less then a team player.

The one big truth in all this is that we just lost a crucial game, and this Jalen hurd controversy is making it all about him. Everyone should be focusing on the team.

Vol74 got put all over social media (twitter) with it stating that he was Hurd's uncle. I can't believe Hurd hasn't put a muzzle on him yet. Even if everything he's saying is absolutely true, telling volnation is only going to cause a slew more problems.

Positive post in the midst of Volnation hell.

John Kelly on #Tennessee's plan going forward: "We're just going to keep working cause there's a lot of football...

Tennessee's Evan Berry...
LEADS THE NATION with a 34.2 career KR average
& RANKS 2ND NATIONALLY with a 32.9 avg in 2016

With 3.0 sacks on Saturday, Tennessee's Derek Barnett now 29.0 in his career - THE MOST AMONG ALL CURRENT FBS PLAYERS!
26.0 in @SEC play!

So, just to get this straight.

Year 1: 5-7
Year 2: 7-5
Year 3: 9-3
Year 4: 5-3
First win in a decade over FL. Win over division rival UGA
Losses to a single loss (AL) A&M team, when player execution with turnovers was clearly the issue.
Loss to Bama
Loss to USCe, which was a bad loss

and everyone is ready to fire Butch and enter into the coaching foray with Texas, LSU, likely Oregon, Notre Dame and more?

Any coach would look at that above and lol, as he took any other job under the sun.

It's a bad loss, and there are issues to correct. Sadly, it looks like most of you have taken the stance of choosing to be miserable and hoping for failure so "the inevitable" comes sooner, rather than later.

You may certainly prove to be right in the end, but to say this is the demise of Butch Jones is laughably premature.

Year 2 we were 6-6. Year 3 we were 8-4. Won bowl games both seasons to finish 7-6 and 9-4.

Here is how I look at the Butch era so far:

year 1 goal: bowl game. Lost to Vandy at home to finish season.
year 2 goal: bowl game. Check
Year 3 goal: compete for East title. Check
Year 4 goal: win East. TBD, but not looking good.

So if you were doing a performance evaluation like any manager would, you would say so far he "meets expectations" 2 out of 3 times, soon to be 2 out of 4. "Fails to meet expectations" at least once. And "exceeds expectations" zero times out of 4.

Not trying to be a smarta** (ok, maybe I am just a little), but outside of recruiting what has Butch done that should inspire faith in him moving forward?
.

It's more than just the last 3 losses though. If our guys had played good, disciplined football and just come up short, most of us would probably be fine. It's really a combination of multiple things that has pretty much convinced me he won't ever get it done. I think it's a combination of the following things:

  • Discipline has been extremely poor this season
  • Offensive production (statistically and on the OL) is comparable to 2013 and 2014 despite a huge increase in talent and experience
  • Has lost at least one game each year that he should have won (this trend has gotten worse the more his teams have had to play for)
  • Hasn't taken advantage of the East being the weakest it's been in decades at all
  • Mismanagement of some of the most naturally talented guys he's brought in (North, Preston, Hurd)
  • Lack of player expected player progression compared to recruiting ranking of a number of players
  • Stubborn unwillingness to adapt offensively that has hurt the team every year he's been here in one way or another
  • Recruiting has fallen off

And it's all made more frustrating because the guy won't even come out and give an honest interview about the things we're seeing on the field. Not saying he has to divulge any team secrets or anything, but his robotic coach speak is really grating.

I can't think of a single human moment I've seen from Butch in his 4 seasons here thus far. It's been straight up coach speak and sales mode since day one. If you're winning games, you can get away with that. If you're not doing so well or are underperforming, people will start to resent you for it.

The first 3 seasons his team's played with great disciple. So why isn't that something to point to as a reason for hope?

That's a good point.

The reason I'm not sure you can't point to it as a positive is because it has trended downward so poorly over the past two seasons, despite the increase in experience.

it looks like we will improve our overall record for the 3rd strait year under butch with a victory over florida, so lets fire him, even though half the team is injured and the qb has been hot steamy poo. later idiots

To me, that is indicative of something not being right with the staff, player development, staff preparation, and/or team confidence in the coaching staff. Maybe a mix of multiple factors to different extents.

But something must not be right for the team to have had such a downward spiral in their discipline.

Hard for me to stand behind a guy who is an obvious cancer... Other RBs are getting yards and big plays. The scheme being flawed, and his pride aren't mutually exclusive. Kelly/Kamara say otherwise. Go to the big ten and play 3 yards and a cloud of dust ball. ✌🏾️

I don't think this is the time to fire him. It would send the wrong message on a lot of levels, we don't have the leadership in place with on the administrative level for it right now, and there will probably be at least 2, if not 3-4 more attractive jobs open at the end of this season.

All I'm saying is there isn't a lot of reason to feel confident in Butch moving forward unless there are some really big changes to this staff.

And I'm not so sure that a round of hiring new offensive staff will go as well for us as we'd all hope.

Old74/Uncle, has stirred up more trouble and has used the FF as his platform. Its hard for me to believe that hurd didn't know about 74 saying stuff that he didn't like and was unhappy. If Hurd knew the whole time then it becomes an agenda and man 74 seem to have one. He has been stirring it up on CBJ the whole season. Doing what he can to make it look like it is all on CBJ. Not taking up for CBJ, just saying its pretty weak letting your uncle do your dirty work.
