How was he coddled by the coaches? The reports are that his teammates voted to have him reinstated after a 1 game punishment

When you let guys quit and come back just to have a better team your begging for issues imho. Tell him he quit his team and to get the hell out. I like Hurd but you can't let guys just quit and come back.

More from Fortenberry in the Kongbo thread on VQ...

"Kids don't have to come in on Sunday. And if there is something to this then they may be trying to talk to him and change his mind. Obviously a lot of variables.

What we are hearing there is a team meeting tonight so we will see what comes of that."

I might get flamed for this, but... I'll reserve judgement on Hurd. I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to have that much talent only to get swarmed under behind the line of scrimmage on 70% of my carries because the blocking scheme is garbage. He's gotten every yard he has virtually by himself. If at this point, he's decided to save his legs for the NFL, then I don't know that I blame him.

I agree. Not going to hate on him when he's saved us so many times by turning negative runs into positive ones. Any other offense in the country would have adjusted to his skill set. Unless it comes out that he 100% is giving up, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Not saying he's gone but doing a little prep work

Butch is owed 2.5 million for each year remaining on his contract. Signed a new deal extending him through the 2020 season. So buyout of 10 million.

I don't want to defend being a bad teammate or quitting but maybe they're tired of being under utilized and tired of bad coaching after all their hard work? There seems to be a pattern here, IMO.

Ya, never going to defend quitting on your team, but gotta feel bad for Hurd with how badly we've wasted his talent.

I'm all for letting the players and coaches make that decision.

We in this thread have absolutely zero pulse on the team and the inner workings. If the players really though Hurd had quit on this team and wasn't on their side, they wouldn't have voted him back and coaches wouldn't have let him back.

Sometimes it's a wake up call for the kid, sometimes it's just a matter of time before they show their true colors. Looks like Hurd's was the latter, unfortunately.

Not exactly true. Hurd has missed holes too and tries to bounce it out. I personally saw him miss a read at Oklakoma as a freshman and chalked it up as being young. But not sure he improved a whole lot. You win as a team and you lose as a team. The primary donnas have to go.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm not taking the loss as hard as I thought I might. The last ten years have taught to expect less from Tennessee. In my heart of hearts I was never truly optimistic about Atlanta after how we played in the opener. I kept thinking game after game that we would either lock in and roll or that the wheels might come off the bus. The wheels are off at the moment. Hope we can get them back on. This team has too much talent to be playing this badly.

I'm honestly a believer that as a program we are much closer to Norte Dame, Penn State and Nebraska than we are to Bama. A former power that can remain competitive, but for which consistent greatness may be a thing of the past.

I've got to take my annual break from VN much earlier this year. Too much negativity for me again and life's too short to let the wishwashiness of teenagers playing (or at least participating in) football on a Saturday ruin it for me.

This is where I am. I have put too much emotion and time into worrying about what 18 year olds do and say. I had hopes for this season but they are fading fast.

I agree with what some have posted. Something is not quite right. One thing that bothers me is we don't seem to be able to substitute the QB for a few plays to see if that is the problem. It seems this team walks an emotional tightrope, and one little thing goes wrong they are overly affected by it.

It's time for Butch to shake up either the players or the coaches or both. Let someone see how they can do.

Transitioning to JG and Kelly/Chandler will be upgrades on offense. Hopefully Butch upgrades at OC also. A lot of our problems lie with Dobbs deficiencies and kamara being hurt. Best case scenario is arkansas and lsu beating florida and us winning out, then the transition to the future.

Our problems lie solely with Butch Jones.

Wow. What a crazy turn of events.

Did kongbo even play much?

The Hurd story is crazy. Which probably means it is accurate.

This loss is worse than the KY loss because of what was on the line.

I'm kind of over it.

This team was the on paper champions of the universe. On the field? Not so much.

I'm currently out on Butch. He's going to have to prove it to me again. I'm pretty confident he'll be our coach next year. We'll see if he can change the narrative around like Sumlin and Malzahn did.

But I'm not expecting anything like that.

If you want to be a professional, then you have to act like a professional. What if he gets drafted by a team that doesn't quite fit him? You play the damn game and play as a team. Not much sympathy from me.
