We are better than Texas A&M

I think VOLS and a@m both know how to defend it. So we need to come out in the I form with kongbo as a Fb and try to run it down there throats and it would simply thingsbc they will be loud. Oh well ! Go VOLS!

You are kidding yourself if you don't think this will be a very tough game for UT. A&M is a great team with talent all over the field and better than any team we have faced this year. It will be the game where we absolutely have to put 4 quarters of football together and not dig a hole early. Not going to bet against UT this year, but we will have to play very well for 4 quarters and getting Kirkland back will definitely help. I just hope we don't have a mental layover from the miracle win last week.

One of the most fortunate aspects of this season so far is we are making mistakes while winning. We seem to get a little better each game as the staff works on the issues exposed in the previous week's win. I hope they can put it all together over the next couple of weeks and beyond.

Winning while making mistakes that get average teams beat is a positive. The ultimate positive is fixing those mistakes as you go because at some point you run into teams you can't win against doing those same things. That starts Saturday.

The defense needs to do a better job of forcing early. Shoop has done a fantastic job of counter punching in the 2nd half but we are giving up too much on the front end. The offense just needs to execute whats there. We have "dropped" too many plays on the ground that have killed drives and made turnovers and points for the opposition.

I think the game is decided by how well our OTs and LBs play.

A&M's overrated---they struggled to beat a terrible south carolina team. UT wins this game by 7+!

Something I just realized, A&M has not played a true mobile QB with a spread O. We should be able to give them fits. The Chief will have some issues containing Dobbs this week for sure. I think the winner of this game will be the team that plays the best Defense. This really is DC vs DC imo.

They had some key players out that game. I doubt they were up for it either. Two top 10 teams competing and them being at home, you can bet they will come prepared. If we dick around the first half we lose Saturday.

I agree, but you are also kidding yourself if you don't think this will be a very tough game for A&M.

agree. and we don't have to imagine...we're down two starting line backers and our best DB, all of which are team leaders, and impact players.

Dobbs is the ace in the hole, he's balled out this year, and he'll need to continue that, the earlier the better, if we're going to have a shot at winning either of the next two games.

defensively, it's up to our D line. they've been outstanding at times, and underwhelming at others.

both teams have to fear the unknown a little bit, as neither team is very familiar with each other.

i think it's gonig to be a good game, both offenses will make plays. if i have to pick right now, i'd take aTm and the -6.5, i could see us losing by a TD.

Give it a rest Jake. I might not even watch the game now after all your predictions. lol. After we beat aTm, just how bad do we get blasted vs. bama?

I hope the Vols pull this one off.... in a very big way. The quick spread teams bother the crap out of me. I actually like Sumlin but I hate that type of football. LSU took care of the other flag football team (Missouri), now its the Vol's turn. Run up the gut, when that doesn't work.... use the speed of their ends against.... they are not disciplined, let them run out of the play.

As far as D, it comes down to DBs to get rid of the quick pass plays early in the down count.

We are going to win this football game. I'm starting to feel it. Arn't you guys? It's an undeniable feeling of confidence. I can visualize this win. You have no reason to doubt at this point unless you are just that kind of person in life.

When Chavis was at LSU he was Johnny Football's kryptonite, he had more success against A&M's offense than anyone.

Historically LSU has done well against the spread teams even without Chavis. Its all about your DBs being able to cover, and taking away the quick pass.... and if they catch it... knocking the crap out of them.

I actually think its easy to defend if you have athletes on the outside... make them pay by LB knocking the crap out of the WRs when they come inside. They want to play flag football... how do you win.... you don't let them play flag football. Eventually they will probably have a string of plays that gets them going... minimize the amount of plays and use time outs especially before half-time to slow down the runs.

Johnny had a good quarter against LSU, after that the adjustment was made on him. I feel TAM is the easiest team in the SEC to plan for... easier than Missouri even.... its about the DBs making tackles... if your DBs can't tackle than it might be a long day.

Win Vols Win!!!!!

After seeing the opening line yesterday, I really started feeling doubtful about our chances to win Saturday. On the surface, Texas A&M looks scary. However, last night I watched Texas AM vs S. Carolina, and I became much more optimistic. Yes, I'm aware A&M was missing several starters, but IMO South Carolina was the better team on the field. They both scored on the opening drive, then they both went stalemate. Neither team scored again until the 3rd quarter. Carolina shot themselves in the foot all game long. They moved the ball fairly easily on that "stout A&M defense", then they would stall out and fail to finish the drive. Also, they missed 2 field goals.

Knight is very suspect. They call him "one-read Knight" on their message boards. He freaks out under pressure, bad. They run a 4-wide set, but they don't have the QB to use it.

Also, something else to consider,

Recruiting class rankings for the last 3 years (using 247 composite):

2016:
Tex-18
Tenn-14

2015:
Tex-11
Tenn-4

2014:
Tex-6
Tenn-7

Average class ranking for the last 3 years:
Tex: 11
Tenn: 8

Also, and I rarely say this, we have the better coach. Sumlin made his reputation by lucking out with Manzeil/Evans, since then he has frequently been on the hot seat.

We have the better team, recruiting-wise. Barnett is better than Myles Garrett. Texas A&M was 8-5 last year. We haven't been beat in 11 games, and we're supposed to be scared of this team?

I'm not saying this is an easy win. But look at the data and watch a bit of film on them this season, they're not what everyone thinks they are.

This is Tennessee's first trip to College Station. You can bet the farm they are going to fill the stands and offer a hostile welcome. In no way do I feel Tennessee should be "scared" of these guys, but they have some talent.

Yeah, South Carolina proved A&M might have some weaknesses, but we need to minimize mistakes. I am sure SportsCenter love the dramatic endings, but this is the best time of the season to play their first complete game. Dominate from the start, and produce some mop up time for back-ups and walk-ons to get their uniforms dirty.

It is also time for the world to give Derek Barnett the respect he deserves. I have heard too many talking heads go on and on about Myles Garrett. All of us know who the better DE is. It's time for the rest of the world to get it.

No slow starts. Come out strong. Run it up on offense, shut them down on defense, and make some highlights on special teams. Make the selection committee's job easy by not giving them a choice. Make the fourth quarter about backup introductions and sideline interviews. Dominate. Leave no doubt.

:thud:
When Chavis was at LSU he was Johnny Football's kryptonite, he had more success against A&M's offense than anyone.

When Chavis was at Tennessee and LSU, he was also the master of the prevent defense that prevented pretty much nothing. I liked Chief as a player and as a coach. But his final two minutes strategy in close games was hard to watch.

And if we might have to win down there on a late score, I love our chances.

I'll go with can win. The only game that UT has played that beats A&M at Kyle Field was UF IMO. And that is based off a dominating second half.

If the crystal ball said expect 60 mins like the half against UF, I would probably fall closer to feeling it.

In my opinion, Georgia was a trap game. Coming off the emotional high of beating Florida, and perhaps looking ahead to TAMU and Alabama, the Big Orange came out of the gate looking much less focused than their opponent. I don't think that will be the case at A&M, another team that is unbeaten and by all accounts formidable. Furthermore, this game doesn't carry the baggage that the UF game did, baggage that caused our offense to play very tight in the first half, which manifested itself as inconsistent execution (read "dropped passes").

All of this said, if UT comes out with the same level of focus that the did against the Gators, while at the same time remaining loose, they have a very good shot at beating A&M. I think that they do both of those things, and I do not think they loose this game.

Let's be honest...... we all overlooked Georgia. I would say players included. Ole Miss embarrassed them, Nicholls State should have beaten them, we outsized and outmatched them in every category.

This offense could have named the score if they were up for the Georgia game. Instead we chose to sleepwalk.

What it comes down to is that UT can't get behind early like they have been. Georgia and Florida are teams that are down right now with a lot of injuries and youth. They had the right attitude to start, but the talent gap between TN and those teams took over in the second half. TN and TAMU don't have a talent gap, TN will need to play disciplined but aggressive football to stay in it. If they get sloppy or feel sorry for themselves then they will be run out of the building. I think TN came in to every game this season thinking they were big dogs only to be smacked with a newspaper right away, hopefully the Georgia game gave them some perspective that they can be beat by some mediocre teams if they don't do their job.

As someone else pointed out, if that team that showed up in the second half against VTech and Florida shows up then they will win easily. If the team that showed up in the 1st half against Georgia, playing soft and making dumb mistakes, shows up then it will be a looooong day.
