Azzanni: 'This is not a pro-style huddle game anymore'

Azzani has underperformed. We have a great staff and he is the weak link. Going after the "ignorance of the fans" is not going to endear him to anyone. Pretty unbelievable actually. Nut up and do your job and make sure the receivers reach their potential before you acxuse millions of people of not understanding the modern game.

I agree with you about Azzani. Lots of critiques about Dobb's accuracy, so if the mountain does not come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain. Our WR MUST get to the ball when it is in the air this year, they have to make the plays.

Speaking of dropped passes, Pennington said on the SportsSource yesterday there were 16 dropped passes for the year. I know,I know, it's Pennington on the SportsSource. I just haven't heard anyone else give a number for dropped passes and was wondering if y'all might have heard of any.

I'm not sure how close that number is, would like to see an official stat. But I tend to think the number is relatively low. I could absolutely be wrong but I just don't recall that many drops last year. There are certainly a handful of drops that come to mind, including one that was critical (Ellis' drop vs Okla) a few that had the potential to be critical (Wolf's drop vs UGA, Malone's drop vs SCar, etc) but they were by far the exceptions rather than the rule.

Drops go both ways. GA dropped a TD in the 4th against us last year that could have turned that game for them. We only remember the ones we drop not the other teams that also determine the games. Overall our WR coaching is very poor. CZA is coaching them exactly like CBJ wants it done but nobody wants to see it. WR recruits see it though.

It baffles me why many more of ypu are not coaching at the college level. You guys obviously know much more than the coaching staff we currently have.

Agree. You really only remember your team's drops, but I honestly don't recall that many. Agree with how poor our WR coaching is. Z just ain't getting it done IMO. Gotta hope our guys' collective talent overcomes him this year.

We are basically the only school that operates a receiving corp this way and our extremely talented players put up pedestrian numbers. Add to that the fact that Azzanni's receivers pretty much always have and...well, you make the connection.

You're getting as bad as ReaderVol with all your Mrs Kravitz nagging. It's a message board intended to allow fans to discuss the Vols via information and opinion. It's not a secret that our WR coach has received a tremendous amount of critique and criticism from fans, media and former players alike.

Hate to tell you Train, but the criticism of Z to this point is beyond justified and ain't gonna stop until the WRs and passing game in general gets to the point where it just approaches what should be expected given the talent he's working with.....he's got a long, long way to go before he gets there. And now that he's decided to insult the intelligence of the fanbase that ultimately pays his rather generous salary, the pressure will do nothing but amp up even further in him.

I don't think a bunch of random people on a message board knows more about coaching on the college level than Butch and his staff. It's funny to see them try to act like "experts" at college football. But that's none of my business.

1.)That stance is not natural.
2.)It is not conducive to shaking your man at the line.
3.) You look ridiculous
4.) Someone has left from the staff the last two years.

Azzanni needs to pack his bags. He's the weakest link on the coaching staff. All that talent at WR and a pile of poo to show for it

There is room for improvement by Azzani, Dobbs, and the receivers but let us not forget how sieve-like our offensive line has been in Butch's time here. Granted, they were better in 2015, but there was a ton of pressure generated up front. We're two years removed from starting a tackle with a broken leg, a year removed from playing two true freshman against Georgia and Alabama and several others that played out of position, and now are finally getting some depth. Fear not. The best is yet to come.

His guys definitely need to step up, but it's hard to argue that most fans really understand the intricacies.

I agree GAVol, most people probably don't. I guess our lack of WR production is just particularly frustrating to me because I played wideout my 4 years of high school lol. I just want to see our leading receiver with 750 yards minimum. Some accountability from Coach Z would be nice every now and then as well.

That argument is so worn out. It's like saying I'm not allowed to criticize the cashier at Kroger when she's ringing up all my stuff really slow....but what do I know, scanning groceries isn't my expertise.

People get criticized a lot for job performance. Do your job that you're getting paid handsomely for and there wouldn't be a problem. Get over it.

I know a lot of the arm chair coaches and radio hosts looking for ratings have been getting on Azzani so I guess they felt it was necessary to try and shut them up. This offense is a lot different than many of us are used to seeing. I believe the coaches put most of their faith in the running game last year. We all know they want to be more balanced this year and hopefully it works out. I think the criticism of Azzani
is unfair we haven't said we need to fire the DB coach for all of the mistakes we saw in the secondary or the special teams coach for the missed field goals. Be happy we have a talented team and let's hope 2016 is a year to remember.

Basillio* wrote something nice on this. Pretty much said Calvin Ridley didn't catch 80+ passes by coming off the field every 4-5 plays.

2016 Playoff Teams Leading Receivers

Alabama - Ridley (89 catches/15 games 1,045 yds, 5.9 catches/game)
Clemson - Scott (93 catches/15 games 901 yds, 6.2 catches/game)
Oklahoma - Shepard (86 catches/13 games, 1,288 yds, 6.6 catches/game)
Michigan St. - Burbridge (85 catches/14 games, 1,258 ydss, 6.1 catches/game)

Tennessee - Von Pearson (38 catches/13 games, 409 yds, 2.9 catches/game.

Those playoff teams could learn a thing or two from Coach Z.
