Byrd showing 'special' promise @ WR

Byrd would be the field stretcher. Josh Malone has had a few years to establish that role and hasn't done well. Would like to see him turn into a Gerald Jones, move the chains type.

Malone has had just TWO years and this is the first where he really has a chance to succeed. Much like the rest of the passing game.

It's apparent that we have to get Byrd on the field..but whose snaps does he take? Josh Smith?

He will replace Jennings on the depth chart by midseason of before. He will be used primarily as a slot WR but he will get some time outside as well.

He will also get to touch the ball on a PR or two to give Sutton a break. He can do so much. We must get him on the field.

It comes down to whose hands do you want the ball in. My top two guys are PWilly and TByrd. If they have over half the catches I think our passing game would be successful. After them I think it's Josh Smith and Malone. Then Jennings and George. We have some talented young guys too in Callaway, Brandon Johnson, and Latrell Williams.

I think the benefits of establishing a no-doubt #1 and #2 receiver are that it makes the defense prepare for them and apply tighter coverage on those guys. If we do that then our run game will only get better and it will drive opposing coaches crazy thinking about how to stop us.
The guy has never taken a snap, and you want the ball in his hand before Smith? Bruh

Personally, yea. I think he's faster than Smith and will be the best receiver at getting yards after the catch. I think that's will the most important attribute for our receivers in our offense.

Sure this is all conjecture, but what's wrong with that? Besides college playing experience what does Smith have that Byrd doesn't? Calvin Ridley did pretty good his first year in college ball so yea I think freshmen are capable of making an impact immediately. Byrd will still have to prove himself obviously before he cracks the starting line-up. As he gets more playing time in the second half of games, I suspect that he will become the main WR target and make it hard for coaches not to get him more touches in big time situations.

I think end-arounds from the WR spot is more likely than just getting carries out of the backfield. Or, trick plays to get him the ball either catching it or throwing it.

I am thinking lines up at Slot and get a pitch after a shift ito the backfield

too much complaining on the subject! i for one am happy to be looking at this chart and seeing the fact we got Malone, Pwill, Smith, Jennings, Byrd, George and not to mention before he got slightly injured brandon johnson was also turning heads this fall.... this is a good thing to look at and i can see where all these guys get a decent amount of balls their way.. i am sure a lot of teams would love this type of talent! now lets see what kind of production we get from this group while mostly healthy! #beatApp go VOLS

You didn't say Byrd would be the best WR by the end of the year, you said which WRs do you want the ball in their hands and you went with a guy who hasn't taken a snap over our most reliable WR. How long before we have to wait on him becoming the guy we go to in key situations?

Byrd will not start out as our go to guy & may not be our go guy all season at WR. That's probably going to be either Preston Williams or Josh Smith as dependable go to guys. Malone I would include but he's not a clear cut go to guy in my opinion.

He has a chance to be though with a breakout season. I say Tyler Byrd will leapfrog Jennings on the depth chart by midseason or before. He will be a definite factor in the passing game by game #4 or #5 or before. Plus, he will also get a select few PR's to give Sutton a rest.

I have a gut feeling that he will make some big catches for us in the Florida game. If not week 4, then sometime in our tough 4 game stretch. The only reason why I am giving you specifics is because:

A. He has extraordinary potential and I want him to shine.
B. I think his skill set at WR is a great fit to our offense. A great slot receiver > a great deep threat in our O.

Agree with you 100% buddy about Byrd. He can stretch the defense with his blazing speed or catch the ball across the middle in the mid range passing game as well. He's got the skillset to do both. He can also return punts as well. He's going to be a great weapon to have on our offense.

Pretty sure you've also called him a bust and overrated. Just saying you tend to call "everything" and therefore call nothing.

LOL. I guess some of you want to disagree with me so badly you'll make up complete lies.

I've been high on Tyler Byrd since the Army All-American game. Never once said he was a bust or overrated. From the start I've said this kid was the best player in the class and a superstar at either WR or CB.

In fact I said he would be a 1st round pick before taking a snap in college and some on here got on me for saying that.

Look for Byrd to get some carries out of the backfield

So we already have (2) 5* RB's that we're trying to split the carries between. We also have a soph RB that everyone's high on who needs some touches. And we signed one of the top 10 RB's in this last recruiting class.

You honestly think Byrd is going to get in that rotation also? If it happens, then Byrd is a CP clone and the staff will be forced to get the ball in his hands any way possible. I'm hoping you're right, but I just can't see him in our super crowded backfield this season.

You're like Chip Bayless, "call" everything and eventually get something right...but meanwhile miss on more than you get right. We'll get a bump for the stuff that you "call", so that we can all give you a nice little pat on the back.

Reconfigure that and you may have found a way to calm him down. :)

No he never said that about Byrd. He called him the best player in the class a future 1st rnd pick at CB.

I agree with that. I don't think he stays on offense.

We'll know more after App State.
