Looking back, I feel like the 2017 class has kind of been a perfect storm of bad circumstances for us. Going all the way back to 2015, we looked forward to this class being a top 5 class where the stars were aligning for us to have possibly the best year of recruiting ever. However, we've had a lot working against us to keep that dream from becoming a reality. Off the top of my head:
1. The way we lost 3/4 of our games in 2015 make it easy for other coaches to negative recruit against Butch as unable to close out big games (no matter how accurate that is or isn't).
2. A number of top in state recruits having little interest in UT to begin with for one reason or another (family issues with UT for Rodgers, not being a native and having little, if any, loyalty to UT for Stevens).
3. The inability to sell immediate playing time the way we could with the 2014 and 2015 class. There's a bit of a logjam at many positions due to how well Butch has recruited recently. This is directly related to the next point.
4. Few players we can point to having put into the NFL draft recently. Teams like Bama, LSU, UGA, and Clemson can point to the players they've put into the NFL to balance out the effect of having loaded depth charts. Though this isn't necessarily Butch's fault, it hurts him on the recruiting trail. Prospects are much more likely to be willing to spend a year or two biding their time if they feel certain that they'll move on to the NFL after they get their chance to start.
5. Two of the legacy recruits we'd long looked forward to as being top tier OL we were shoe-ins to land (Isaiah Stokes and Jalen McKenzie) aren't nearly as highly regarded as they once were. Stokes isn't even playing football anymore and McKenzie has had a number of setbacks with injuries that make his CFB future a bit of an uncertainty. Around this time last year (maybe earlier, I can't remember exactly) it was assumed those two would be 4* cornerstones of our OL class.
6. No one is really sure of the extent it really impacted us on the recruiting trail, but the Title IX lawsuit undoubtedly had some negative effect on our AD and Football staff's PR.
7. As far as WRs go, we've had another perfect storm of circumstances working against us. A lot of highly touted guys can't stay healthy or haven't lived up to their billing (respectively, North and Malone), the OL's struggles in pass pro, (the perception/reality of) poor WR coaching, QB struggles in the passing game since Butch came to town, and the fact that our running game has been so good our coaches would be stupid not to build our off dive attack around it. (Edit: I really do expect our passing game to take a solid ate forward this year due to a combo of the best mix of OL and QB experience we've seen under Butch and good experienced and young talent across the board at WR and TE. )
I think we'd be able to overcome any one or two of these circumstances and put together a killer class under normal conditions, but all of it coming together at once has made things difficult for the staff to close IMO.
Luckily, I really do think our 2016 class was underrated and that our staff is pretty good at identifying less highly regarded guys with a lot of potential. Additionally, the 2018 in state class seems to be really strong and we have an in with a number of out of state talent due to recruiting success in earlier classes.
I think we'll see a slight uptick in 2017 recruiting that coincides with on the field success in 2016. However, we're not gonna have a class near the caliber we'd long assumed we'd have this year. I really do think we can have that type of recruiting class in 2018 though, since a large number of the circumstances working against us this year will likely have been remedied and/or forgotten by this time next year.
