Jordan Murphy admittedly knew even before he arrived on Tennessees campus Thursday to participate in its final camp of the summer that he was ready to commit the Vols.
By the end of his visit, he decided it was time to make his decision official.
The three-star senior wide receiver from Hattiesburg (Miss.) High School committed to Tennessee on Thursday night during his visit with the Vols, choosing them over Alabama and scholarship offers from several other major programs, including LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn.
The 6-foot-1, 168-pound Murphy gave Tennessee its 22nd commitment for the 2017 class, its fourth in the past three days and its third from a projected wide receiver, joining three-star prospects Princeton Fant of La Vergne, Tenn., and Jacquez Jones of Clearwater, Fla.
I knew I was going to commit today, said Murphy, whos ranked the nations No. 435 overall prospect and No. 64 wide receiver in the 247Sports Composite for the 2017 class. Ive been thinking it for about three weeks.
Murphy said he picked Tennessee because of how aggressively the Vols have been recruiting him and his relationships with wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni and running backs coach Robert Gillespie, who also played at Hattiesburg High School.
I came up here to talk to Coach Z about it, and I told him that I wanted to (commit) because I like Tennessee, Murphy said. I liked how he coaches, and I want him to coach me as a receiver.
They were coming after me hard. I text Coach Z and Coach Gillespie every day. They were the only ones showing that much love.
Murphy said Tennessee has been at the top of his list for a while, and his first visit to Knoxville about a month ago made him like the Vols even more.
The first time I came up here, I got introduced to Coach Z, Coach Gillespie, and they introduced me to coach Butch Jones, Murphy said. Ever since then, Ive been interested in Tennessee.
He said he also enjoyed working with Azzanni during Thursdays camp.
I got a good vibe from Coach Z, Murphy said. We connect real good.
(I like) the way he coaches me.
Murphy said it also doesnt hurt that Gillespie is a fellow Hattiesburg native who happened to attend his high school.
It feels good, because he knows what Ive been through and how our school was, Murphy said. and Ill be able to catch onto more if I ask him for help.
While National Signing Day for the 2017 class still is more than six months away, he doesnt plan to visit any other schools in the coming months. And he said he doesnt expect to change his mind about playing at Tennessee.
This is my final decision, Murphy said.
