.The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Cotman said he chose the Vols because of just how much they showed love, led by first-year tight ends coach Larry Scott, despite the fact that he has yet to make the trip to Tennessee.
Coach Larry Scott, he never gave up, said Cotman, whos ranked the nations No. 367 overall prospect and No. 5 all-purpose back in the 247Sports Composite for the 2017 class. He would stay in touch with me daily. They had one more spot (for a cornerback), and I think I was supposed to fill that spot at DB. Im going to go off and play DB in college, and thats what I wanted to play. I see a good opportunity for me to play my first year and just show the world what Im about. I always liked the school. I always liked Tennessee. I like all the coaches. They just show a lot of interest, and thats what really made me confident.
My dad, he talks highly of the school, he said. He always wanted me to go up there, check it out, but we havent ever had the time to. A lot of people just like the school and like the environment. My dad, he knows about their program their facilities and everything of that nature."
Everybody always wants to be an offensive person. Its not that many that want to play that DB position, said Cotman, who claims to have been timed at 4.41 or 4.42 seconds in the 40-yard dash. If its in Gods will for me to make it all the way, corners, they last a long time in the NFL. Im just looking into the future.
Im trying to get up there before school starts, he said. I just cant wait to see it in person when I go up there in a couple of weeks. And Im going to catch a couple games, too probably the Florida and the Alabama game.
I already made up my mind. Im planning on sticking with it, he said. I dont like decommitting and stuff like that. I aint the type to just keep changing my mind and stuff.
I just dont understand these kids these days. If your not 100% sure, wait. Why even commit? Strange commitment.
I like poof.
The young man is doing it right from his perspective. It's the right thing for him to do. It's what's best for him. Obviously he has someone advising him. He has a place now with U.T. but also has leverage for a better offer if it comes along. Also lets him still get the treatment and perks of a still available recruit. This is what you get when you go after 4-5 star recruits. It comes with the territory. If you want hard working, dedicated U.T. guys you recruit 3 stars. That's why Butches teams are mostly 3 star guys with incredibly high 4-5 star ceilings. then he goes after a handful of 4-5 star guys to get guys that can have an immediate impact. I said it before, I don't know how, or who does Butches recruit scouting but whoever it is knows EXACTLY what they re doing.
At this point this is a business transaction for this young man and he is treating it like the art of the deal.
The coaches should pull his offer from under his feet now. What a ****ing absurb thing to say. Peace out! Vols aren't the team to play with or toy around with at this juncture. Finally have a reputible roster and it's continuing to thicken. Either hop on the train or don't.
He has offers from the last six teams to play for a NC. What "better" is he looking for?
Bob Welton is the name of the recruiting scouting director (Director of Player Personnel) at UT. He has been worth his weight in gold so far in Butch's tenure.
I've seen a lot of stuff about Bob Welton and he seems like a very bright guy that knows the recruiting profile that theyre after and that profile has had a very high success rate so far. I always just kinda assumed they have a team of people that watch film and visit schools and when they find a kid that fits the mold they bring in Mr Welton and he either will disagree and move on or agree and bring in Butch or the position coach to evaluate. Not sure but all involved have done a splended job including Bob Welton.
