New commit: 4-star FL ATH CJ Cotman

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Cotman said he chose the Vols because of “just how much they showed love,” led by first-year tight ends coach Larry Scott, despite the fact that he has yet to make the trip to Tennessee.

“Coach Larry Scott, he never gave up,” said Cotman, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 367 overall prospect and No. 5 all-purpose back in the 247Sports Composite for the 2017 class. “He would stay in touch with me daily. They had one more spot (for a cornerback), and I think I was supposed to fill that spot at DB. I’m going to go off and play DB in college, and that’s what I wanted to play. I see a good opportunity for me to play my first year and just show the world what I’m about. I always liked the school. I always liked Tennessee. I like all the coaches. They just show a lot of interest, and that’s what really made me confident.”

“My dad, he talks highly of the school,” he said. “He always wanted me to go up there, check it out, but we haven’t ever had the time to. A lot of people just like the school and like the environment. … My dad, he knows about their program — their facilities and everything of that nature."

“Everybody always wants to be an offensive person. It’s not that many that want to play that DB position,” said Cotman, who claims to have been timed at “4.41 or 4.42” seconds in the 40-yard dash. “If it’s in God’s will for me to make it all the way, corners, they last a long time in the NFL. I’m just looking into the future.”

“I’m trying to get up there before school starts,” he said. “I just can’t wait to see it in person when I go up there in a couple of weeks. … And I’m going to catch a couple games, too — probably the Florida and the Alabama game.”

“I already made up my mind. I’m planning on sticking with it,” he said. “I don’t like decommitting and stuff like that. I ain’t the type to just keep changing my mind and stuff.”

I just dont understand these kids these days. If your not 100% sure, wait. Why even commit? Strange commitment.

I think these kids are learning. Some schools this wouldn't play at. At Tennessee, it does. Recruits and their families pay attention. Commit to UT, there is no guarantee you get to sign. You may be replaced at any point. If a recruit commits and shuts it down in July, he's setting himself up to risk being burned. Best thing to do is keep your options open. If the coaches want to keep their options open even to the extent of dropping commitments, the recruits have to protect themselves as well.

Because UT has very few spots left. He's sure enough he wants to play for the Vols to reserve a spot but wants to keep his commitment open in case Butch fails this season IMO

Maybe it would have been better if he just said UT is at the top of his very, very impressive list.

Oh well. *cue The Eagles "Long Run"*

I like poof.

The young man is doing it right from his perspective. It's the right thing for him to do. It's what's best for him. Obviously he has someone advising him. He has a place now with U.T. but also has leverage for a better offer if it comes along. Also lets him still get the treatment and perks of a still available recruit. This is what you get when you go after 4-5 star recruits. It comes with the territory. If you want hard working, dedicated U.T. guys you recruit 3 stars. That's why Butches teams are mostly 3 star guys with incredibly high 4-5 star ceilings. then he goes after a handful of 4-5 star guys to get guys that can have an immediate impact. I said it before, I don't know how, or who does Butches recruit scouting but whoever it is knows EXACTLY what they re doing.

At this point this is a business transaction for this young man and he is treating it like the art of the deal.

Bob Welton is the name of the recruiting scouting director (Director of Player Personnel) at UT. He has been worth his weight in gold so far in Butch's tenure.

The coaches should pull his offer from under his feet now. What a ****ing absurb thing to say. Peace out! Vols aren't the team to play with or toy around with at this juncture. Finally have a reputible roster and it's continuing to thicken. Either hop on the train or don't.

Only a recruit who's always been a Vol fan is going to think like that.

All the rest, especially 4 and 5 star ballers, know that for them it's all about developing rapport with coaches good enough to train them up, playing time, and getting to the combine. NFL is the prize.

Your attitude of "rah rah Alma Mater U, get on or get out" is being replaced by recruits making pure business decisions.

Aaaand.. getting to make a bunch of free trips on their OV's. ... :)

During recruiting, I don't think they really don't give much of a hoot about what D1 FBS school they play for, nor should they; as long as the schools on their final list will get them the training & exposure they need. Notice I did not say attend, because NCAA D1 football for true 4 & 5 star players is hopefully only a stepping stone to pros. After that, comes all the rest, even loving UTK. As said before, he's keeping it real. They should change the "commit" to "Primary Interest" or something, and the rules around recruiting commitments to reflect that for both recruit and school.

There's always some exceptions. We can "sis boom bah" with those. I am a homie after all. ;-)

Go Vols!
Welcome to the program CJ! Hopefully....maybe..

PuhLEEEZE! You a baller son! I want to see you in Rocky Top!

Agree with orange dog. Wish posters wouldn't diminish our chances of getting a solid running back, especially this year. Put yourself in his shoes. Leaving Flawda to come to Thrill Hill is a big move. I'm thankful we are getting and keeping coaches who are developing long term relationships with these young men.

Glad to have you on board CJ. I am still reaping benefits of my UT education and experience. You will not regret making your UT decision! GBO!

I've seen a lot of stuff about Bob Welton and he seems like a very bright guy that knows the recruiting profile that theyre after and that profile has had a very high success rate so far. I always just kinda assumed they have a team of people that watch film and visit schools and when they find a kid that fits the mold they bring in Mr Welton and he either will disagree and move on or agree and bring in Butch or the position coach to evaluate. Not sure but all involved have done a splended job including Bob Welton.
