I came to UT in 2012. Remember deciding to sit the troy game out. Could hear so many cannon blasts, but was depressed cause they were close the whole game. Then we lost to Mizzou... then Vandy. Bad times. But drunk times.

The did get blasted by Arizona. But Mariota in college was a beast. We would probably abuse them in the trenches though and render him fairly ineffective.

He came in to return a punt against somebody not very good and almost broke it for a TD. I thought he would for sure take back at least a few kicks or punts for TD's. But I don't think he ever did. Could be wrong tho.

He never did.

I expected him to be above average in the return game but he was very average outside of the scrub teams

This. Evan Berry is that dude. I never thought we would see a better returner here than CP, but Berry is building a multiple year legacy. And he gives you that same electric feeling like he's gonna house it every time he gets a shot. And sometimes he just does.

I hope he steps up on defense this year and forces his way on the field somewhere. I want to see him In the game more in general. Maybe at that new star position. Seems like he could shine there.

CP is just a different animal. He broke some tackles, but mostly left fools grasping at air.
Evan has great straight line speed, and benefits from some missed/broken tackles

Evan also has superior blocking, but all great returners do. That's a part of why they break so many

I wouldn't complain about either. I still remember the days we were happy that someone was actually fielding punts, as opposed to Dooley literally not sending a returner back, SMH

It will be a long, long time (if ever) before we see another body of work like that one year CP put together. We've had some great players here but if you compare his one year to others' one year... CP may have the best one-season highlight video I've ever seen

Not exactly true. Some of his best returns and offensive plays were against the likes of Alabama and LSU. I'm not claiming he was on the same level as CP or EB, but he's every bit as good or better than some guys we've praised in the past like Dennis Rogan, Corey Larkins, Johnathan Wade, or Leonard Scott.

Evan doesn't benefit from broken tackles. He breaks these tackles. Sheds tackles with ease. Which helps him break a lot of returns. He's a better return man than CP due to his willingness to get North and South. CP is better in open field but Berry has better vision for sure. Reason why he always hits the right lane.

Dooley not making Denarious Moore field punts is calamity. Said he didn't want to do it at Tennessee. Should've benched him for it. As soon as he was drafted by the Raiders he was fielding punts immediately.

I'll disagree in the screen game. He was rarely ever used and was not very effective.

His best year receiving was his junior year (6 receptions). For perspective, Jalen had 35 his freshman year.

Nah Young got almost knocked out against Bama. LSU was blowing us out and he still didn't run anything back. Who's praising the other guys? Even though I would definitely take them over Young any day as a return man. Only reason he had so many return yards is because we weren't stopping anybody.

Devrin wasn't very good. I know a lot of people loved him since he was the little guy from Knoxville but the onfield performance just wasn't there.

He probably would've been better if he had the talent that's on this team now but he probably wasn't talented enough to be on this team.

My memories of his career will always be frustrating open field slips and that fumble against Miss St.

If devrin had been from Texas, no one would be in his corner, 100% of VN would have been calling for him to be benched.

One of my most vivid, bad memories of Tennessee football was that MSU fumble. Along with the 3 collapses last year. And the arkansas punt return rounds out the top 5.

The miss state game was by far DY best game as a vol until the fumble. He was being featured heavily due to injuries of other backs and was playing a very good game.

The op that said he was used in the screen is partially right if you count jet sweeps and backward passes as screens which the stats don't show

I watched some of last year's South Carolina game last night and I remember at least two drops on intermediate routes (one was Josh Smith on a slant route). And he had a couple really nice completions on mid-range throws. If our receivers can help him out some, his stats will be better even if he doesn't improve as a passer (I think he will show some improvement, though).

Haha, I was 5 rows up from the field on the side where it happened at the 20 yd line. Seered into my memory. It was all I could do not to run on the field and tackle him myself.

I know when we hired coach Scott all the talk was about how great of recruiter he was. Has there been anyone in this class that he has brought in or anyone that he is still on?

I've been wondering the same thing, but recruiting elite players in flarduh, which iirc is where he is supposed to be working, is tough sledding.

"I mean, I don't know how many times you have to beat somebody over 10 years plus in a row for them to just really own up. It's just, I mean, I've never been beaten 11 years in a row by one team or one person, so I wouldn't know how that feels. But it's talked about a lot."

"But at the end of the day, if you want to win the East, you've got to come through the Gators. Tennessee is one of those teams like no matter how much they get up on us, we just feel like we're going to win that game at the end of the day.

"Through (the last) two years we've won by two points combined, so that just tells you the drive that we have to win the game. No matter what, no matter how many points they score, no matter how many yards they get, as long as we're up by one point. I think we'll do the same thing this year."
