Last year around this time of the summer I gave an update on the new guys and first impressions, etc.
It seemed to be appreciated so I figured I'd do it again this year. Without further ado:
Marquill: dudes a thick CB who has already been receiving praise for his work ethic & leadership. Would bet he will see plenty of PT as a primary backup this season. Real nice kid.
Alexis Johnson: as Larry said in the football forum, it's looking like AJ will be back in the fall. Whether or not he plays this year or red shirts is up in the air, but from a physical standpoint the guy is huge. He looks bigger than listed, definitely closer to KM type size. He carries the weight well and none of it seems to be bad weight.
Jeff George: Tall, lanky but getting bigger. Red zone aficionado. Staff seems to be liking his progress and he seems to be taking care of business on and off the field in the classroom. With what we have at WR he seems to fit a nice possession receiver type role. Huge wingspan + frame + vertical = massive target radius for Dobbs.
DJ Henderson: DJ is an impressive looking player who was recruited to fill up depth in the secondary. He is someone I haven't seen as much but am looking forward to following during camp.
Bituli: physical specimen. Easily 6'3"-6'4" 230 with absolutely no bad weight. Looks like he can put his finger in the dirt, stand up on the edge, or play any LB spot just based off the eye test. Yes ma'am yes sir type of kid. Looking forward to following him throughout camp.
J. Blakely: very similar build to Bituli. May even be slightly heavier. it looks like his HS weight training program was legit.
Callaway: my bet to be a future star. First thing that jumps out (beside the dreads): his personality. Hilarious, well-mannered kid who seems to be well liked by his teammates. Has ideal WR size & can play every position at receiver. Future leader.
Tyler and CFA: lumped them together because they are both very similar in both size and personality. Both around 6 foot and seem to have taken advantage of HS weight training. Of course they can stand to gain weight (and by the season I expect it to happen) but for new enrollees they are on the better half of the physical side. Both very nice, leader type kids. Butch has a recruiting profile that starts with personality and these guys fit it perfectly.
Kongbo: good luck blocking him.
Nigel: you can just tell he's got the 'it factor' you want in an elite DB. He's got the size and the ability. Now it's time to see him play. Our future is bright in the secondary.
This is part 1, will be back later with part 2
These past few classes I have noticed a trend in the kind of player we recruit. They seem to all first and foremost have positive mindsets and those leadership intangibles that are hard to develop. They also are guys who physically look like they've had a year or two in a college weight program (outside of some OL which ideally red shirt anyways). I believe these are two things which are very important to be developed as early as possible that way the other parts of adjusting to college football/life are easier for these guys which is IMO a big reason why we are seeing freshman come in each year who are immediately carving out an important role on the team.
Hope this gets you as pumped for practice to start as it gets me!
