It's definitely a different game. In 1998, Peyton's 3700+ passing yards was 5th in the league. Cam's 4000+ in 2011 wasn't even in the top 10.

Newton did have Steve Smith, who will probably be in the HOF.

Interesting stat on Twitter from @SEC_Country_ Didn't know Dobbs finished 5th in SEC for passing yards. Viable enough for this offense, considering what he can do with his legs.

#SEC Passing Yards:

1) Chad Kelly - 4,042
2) Dak Prescott - 3,793
3) Brandon Allen - 3,440
4) Jake Coker - 3,110
5) Joshua Dobbs - 2,291

I don't know where to begin. Peyton Manning is just a better football player than Cam Newton. He is absolutely the superior quarterback & passer. That really isn't debatable.

Newton has had a great season this year. He was the best player in the NFL this year & will win NFL MVP. But don't get carried away with the hype just yet. Greatness isn't something that is developed overnight. Consistency actually means something.

Newton is finishing off an amazing season. He set personal bests in almost every statistical category. Unfortunately for Newton, Peyton Manning posted a higher passer rating than Newton's personal record 8 different times. Do you think Newton will have 8 better seasons in his career than his breakthrough season this year? Don't forget Newton's terrible seasons the last 2-3 years before this season.

Manning has thrown for 55 touchdowns in a season. Manning has won the NFL MVP award 5 times, been named to 14 Pro-Bowls, & been rewarded as a 1st-Team All-Pro 7 times. Manning holds the single-season & career records for passing yards & passing touchdowns. No quarterback in the NFL has ever won more games. Ever. Those are just a few things on the top of my head that Manning can do that Newton can't.

An older Steve Smith. Harrison was in his second year. He could blow the top off of defenses all game. Steve was a bit past his prime to me. This year Cam has garbage at WR though and threw 35 TDs.

And you all can say what you want 4,000+ as a rookie doesn't just happen. Ask all these other busts. I'd take Cam over a younger Manning any day. You can't coach what he's got. And I'm a huge Manning fan. 😁

I love Peyton just as much as the next guy, but anyone who would take Peyton in his current state over Cam Newton right now is absolutely blinded by their own biases. It's obvious PM isn't the same QB he built his career as, and even if the argument were 'Who'd you rather have in their prime', it's still not an obvious one or the other.

The thing that Cam gives you that Peyton can't is this.He forces the d to play 11 on 11.Which opens up the whole offense.Cams only problem will be if he can stay healthy.Historically running qb don't have long healthy careers in the league.Both are great players with strong abilities to help their team succeed.

The arguments for Peyton are based on knowing what he did over the course of his career. We can't compare apples-to-apples as Cam is in the early stages of his career.

Here's the real question...knowing how Peyton's career turned out, would you take him after his 4th year, or do you go with Cam based on his tremendous athleticism and promise?

If you think like a NFL GM would have to Cam makes more sense to me. If you look at the individual pieces of that offense I don't think there's another QB that could make them the #1 scoring offense. And that allows you in the future to keep all the important pieces of the defense and build on that.

Last year pretty much the same Panther team was sub .500 and the difference has been Cam taking more control of the offense Pre-Snap so from here on out the sky is the limit for him

You think a running QB can sustain that kind of success for 15 years?

I mean, Peyton threw for 55 TDs at 37 years old.

Cam may very well be a HOF player and the premiere QB in the NFL for years to come. But I would go with Peyton...with the admitted advantage of knowing his career ultimately re-writes the record books.

We all expect Cam to have an unbelievable career...but in Peyton's case, it's not simply expectations, it's reality.

I don't know the finances of an NFL franchise with respect to the various revenue streams, etc. But, you aren't considering another aspect. Not only do we already know what Peyton's career on the field looks like, but we also know what his career off the field looks like. We know that he sets up Foundations and gives generously to the city where he plays. We know that because of these things, we can sell #18 jerseys like hot cakes all across the country.

I know for a GM (not the owner, though) it comes down to wins, losses and championships. But there is more to consider in this riddle of who would be chosen as your quarterback when building a franchise.
