Trust in his Ability to land top 5 talent and not push the numbers issue so early in the cycle.
If numbers are plentiful late in the process recruit under the radar kids that are committed elsewhere. This method has been very beneficial in the past for our roster
Jones and his staff have done a tremendous job of landing Tennessee legacy recruits (Bates, McKenzie, Kelly Jr., the Berry twins) and four-star safety Nigel Warrior (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge), the son of former Vols great Dale Carter.
Lots of talk on our board about the morality involved in recruiting. Would you rather Butch stay true to his word at all times with commits and perenially land top 20 classes, or have him lie, cut, and cull his way to a top 5 classes?
I'm not at all convinced that it's impossible to both stay true to his word and recruit at an elite level.
Picture this:
"Defending Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning, who retired after winning his second Lombardi Trophy last season, was on the sidelines in Atlanta watching as his alma mater dominated Alabama 34-10 to win the SEC Champiosnhip and secure a place in the CFB Playoffs."
It's very possible. Had Butch not reached on Hart, Marshall, and Okonya so early. Then finished the class with say Warrior, Kongbo, and Byrd, the class would have been just fine and not had the negatives tied to it. It's very possible.
