How many good years did Lewis have in college?

Freshman year was incredible (just got his shot a couple games too late)

Sophomore year started very strong then the knee

Junior year was decent. Many felt he was sandbagging trying to not get hurt again. Other felt he was just slow getting back from the injury. Back then, conventional thinking was it took two seasons for someone to be their old self after ACL injuries.

Jamal Lewis is probably the most gifted RB I've seen outside of Adrian Peterson. Can't believe there are some here saying Gurley is better.

There is a reason he has a 2000 yard rushing season on his resume. Before the prison bid he was the most feared man in the NFL.

Absolute freak.

Only in the NFL does a prison bid make you less scary. :)

Gurley didn't really have any slacking years. Plus he could return kicks. His freshman year where he punished Bama in the SECCG was ridiculous. Right should've been fired for not winning with that team. Lol

I like Lewis but Gurley is my guy for the modern era. I didn't see Webb so I can't comment on him.

College Football's Most Valuable Teams

For everyone who questions our AD's leadership. Hart has improved our finances and overall direction immeasurably.

Amazing how 30 million extra annually from sec network will do that. Tired of all these stories about current sec ADs drastically improving finances like they had anything to do with it.

Bo Jackson is the most gifted RB I've seen period. Not even close. IMO Injury stopped a special athlete......

Bo Jackson was a freak of nature. Literally could have been a HOF (or at least very close) in two sports before his injury.

I was too young to remember him in college but I was watching on MNF when he ran that near 100 yard run into the tunnel...

He was incredible in college although he tapped out in Knoxville in 85 when the Vols D blasted him repeatedly.

Because of the nature of their college career, I agree that Gurley was better.

I saw Chuck Webb...in my opinion his ability/production was to the level that he would have been in the same conversation as Bo and Herscehel. Not quite at their level (not as much of a physical specimen) but he would have been at the top of the rest. It is an absolute shame that he got hurt...in a game against Pacific no less...he was on his way to SEC legend status.

Things are so different now though...the folklore of college sports is gone because of the nature of media coverage. Gurley was ridiculous but it just doesn't seem the same these days. Closest we've had to folklore in the modern era is Tim Tebow.

Nope. It's Barry Sanders for me. Bo was a special blend of size and speed, no doubt. So was Herschel in his prime. But Barry Sanders could do stuff on the football field that defied logic. He was must see TV every time he hit the field. Whomever coined the phrase "breaking ankles" must have had Sanders in mind. He would make dudes look foolish.

Barry is my favorite RB of all time. Also the best RB of all time. IMO 😀

Unfortunately we are no longer in the "romantic era" of college sports. I may sound like an old guy, but college football and college bball are a shell of themselves compared to the 80s and 90s. This is especially the case in basketball.

I think football is better. Agree on basketball.

Lol just skip to the 2 minute mark for why Webb was a bad ass.

Also if you watch the whole clip you'll see blocking and mack truck sized holes that we accuse Henry of taking advantage of.

That brings up my main consideration for best back of all time. Barry Sanders was the only back I ever saw that could make a run where blocking didn't exist.

I definitely think talent is better in football now (guys are bigger and faster than ever). For a guy (me) who takes full advantage of all the media and message boards make available these days, there was something special and mysterious about this freshman who you heard rumors about being special...but you didn't know much about him or his recruitment...he just kinda shows up out of nowhere. To some degree, the plethora of coverage we have now takes some of the "legend" out of the game.

jave- did you read it? UT moved up because they are maximizing profits by not spending as much. The new SEC money certainly helps, but UT's profit margin of 74% was second overall to Texas, and only eight total teams were above 60%. Only UK, Mizzou, Vandy, and Mississippi State spent less, which is pretty damn impressive. People can complain about Hart all they want to, but he has done a fantastic job in this area. The UT AD was at a crossroads when he came on.

Hart does well at everything that actually matters.

I agree...Barry Sanders is the GOAT. As far as being a physical specimen, Chuck wasn't like Bo and Herschel. But he did have more wiggle than those two. He had power, speed and was extremely agile. He was going to be one of the greatest.
