I was wrong about this. I thought he would bring someone with him from Penn State.
My favorite part of the press conference was Shoop discussing the interview process. He said it consisted of Butch locking him in the room with Willie, Thig, and Strip for 12 hours, saying "You guys work it out". Shoop said that it invigorated him. Another big thing he said was that there are similarities between the 2015 defense we have and what he's bringing, so he can "meld" some things without starting from scratch.

Shoop:
you build defense around players, not the other way around"

This may be the single most important thing any coach can ever say... You build your team to their strengths and not a set system you don't try to push a square peg into a round hole... If you lacked confidence in Shoop before, this should ease your mind that this guy can make adjustments

Per Butch at press conference

We have some really good receivers but we have to find out what is going on with the lack of production. Q.B. can't get ball to them? Pass Game co ordinator isn't being very imaginative? bUTch wants to use receivers in a blocking role?
If this isn't fixed quickly, then other schools will use it against us when we recruit other receivers in the future. Negative recruiting. You don't want to go to U.T., you won't get the ball.
The attitude is leaning towards Azziani leaving. If by game 5 of next season, if we don't have a good amount of yardage by the receivers, I think the fans will start making their unhappiness known. Then it is only a matter of time before a change is make.
There will eventually be a situation in which the time is not on our side and we are 80 yards away from the winning score. We will need to cover alot of ground in a short time. If the passing game fails and we lose that game, then???????????????????

Was kind of hoping one more move, but overall I'm pumped about the new guys on staff

My thoughts exactly. No worries, ready to roll with the existing staff especially since Shoop came aboard. Great things about to happen in 2016.

You mean like Butch did when he replaced Chaney and Pittman with the best bearcat staff in America (which wasted the senior year of our NFL bound offensive line)?

Like putting Worley into a zone read offense.

He actually said after that statement that it's an ongoing process trying to retain coaches. There may be a couple more by spring training. Jmo

But those are usually like quality control positions or graduate assistants, things like that, by spring training (or after signing day) it is the small jobs. Big jobs like OC, DC LB or WR coaches are all filled

Really was hoping for a dedicated QB coach. Dobbs is great at what he is good at but he needs to work on that long ball.

Opinion (wanted to clarify since some here accuse me of speaking with too much certainty):

I smirked when Jones hired his first staff after saying he would assemble the best staff in America. I actually took the Debord hire more serious than many. My thought was that Jones was looking for someone who fit over someone who brought great skill.... then UT went from 10th in the SEC in scoring to 3rd... from 370 ypg to 422 ypg. That's more than experience or talent. Debord made tremendous improvements the OL.

I'm not totally sure that UT has the "best" staff in America... but the addition of Shoop and Scott is encouraging. I think UT may now have one of the better staffs in the country.... The proof comes next September but they look like a top 5-10% staff.

I like Dobbs and appreciate everything he has done and does. But I am coming to the opinion that what he lacks won't be fixed by a year of coaching or maybe much more than that.

In baseball, one of the worst things a pitcher can be is inaccurate within the strike zone. I think that describes Dobbs. Receivers are constantly having to adjust their hands and bodies. Seldom does he lead receivers open.

We've seen him accurately throw the ball. But when it comes to putting the ball where it needs to be in live action... something doesn't click.

A top 5-10% staff would be 1-12. I think last years staff was in the top 12

Excellent!!! We only have 22 days remaining to add 3-4 more bricks to this 2016 recruiting class.

I won't knock you for the opinion but I don't think Jancek is or was at that level as a DC.

There are still a couple of guys I think bring the average down so to speak. I think the 3 changes since the original staff have been moderate to significant upgrades.

BTW, (and those of you who think I "hate" Jones please bookmark this)... Jones gets an absolute TON of credit here. It is never easy to tell someone that they no longer have a job. Even if you don't pity the person, the ripple effect always reaches and hurts others who don't deserve it. It is even worse to part ways with someone you care about and consider a friend.

I criticized Fulmer for letting his personal loyalty to certain individuals stand in the way of doing what was best for the program and everyone else in it. Jones deserves major, major props for putting the program ahead of even a close friend and work partner.

By next September you won't recognize that guy wearing number 11 whizzing 30-40 yard strikes on the money...gonna happen...

GO VOLS!

We haven't seen eye to eye on everything, but your last couple of posts ITT are spot-on. Dobbs accuracy issues are a problem that likely won't be improved a ton, but we may be good enough to overcome it. Also - great analogy with Fulmer and loyalty to a fault. Really impressed with Butch and his willingness to make the change.
