'16 AZ DE Jonathan Kongbo UT Signee 2/3/16

We're still going to be okay and keep winning more games next year, but losing your only 5 star recruit does sting a little bit. At least we really don't need DEs.

Well we're about what a month away from signing day. They can add some guys, it's still not going to be a great class. You just can't fall behind in this league, it catches up to you at some point.

We'll be fine. We don't really need any day one starters this year. Just get some guys that have an upside and coach them up.

We still may pull in a good class, but indications, SO FAR, is that we will not, and Please NO Big Fish expectations on NSD. It does not happen very often, especially compared to the rumors & expectations. In other words, I doubt it.

I think we finish strong and everyone who is lamenting the current state of recruiting will have some serious crow to eat 4 weeks from today.

Perhaps coaches should have prospects look up the word commitment in the dictionary before allowing them to 'commit'. However, coaches should as well when they 'cut bait' for a higher ranked prospect. Btw, watch Georgia here, they hired the guy that had convinced him to look at UW. Hmmmm

Gee, I guess that's why two classes in a row ranked 15th and 17th really killed Ole Miss.

This class we'll be fine. I imagine we add another stud or two, but miss out on some other big targets as well. But no matter the ranking, we picked up some really, really talented guys at the top of this class. We got a QB with as much talent as any in the 2016 class, a corner who has the potential to be a lockdown Cam Sutton replacement for us, an OT with all the measurables you look for, and the top JUCO DT.

There are a lot of other guys in this class like CFA, Bituli who have all the tools to be great players for us and should have the luxury of redshirting before getting a chance to crack the lineup in 2016. This class is and will be fine. We have a lot of talent on our roster and will through 2017 at least.

Excellent post. :good!:

Just need to look at it this way:

A commitment is no different than a Swedish Engagement.

If you ever been to Sweden, you'll know what I mean here. :)

I think we are trending downward on the recruiting trail. We don't have immediate playing time to sell and we haven't proven we can win championships yet. WR recruiting going nowhere (top flight WR's want to be thrown the ball) and our biggest wants are stringing us along. But I will be more than happy to munch on some crow if I'm wrong. I'll have it with a nice Chianti...:eek:k:

USC lock.

UT's recruiting class has fallen to 9th in the SEC and 26th nationally. But don't worry... its all good. No. In fact, it is GREAT! <sarcasm>

Seriously, some of you need to face problems rather than trying to just hand wave them. Jones has some serious work to do in order to make this a good class. And contrary to to the opinions of some, this is a critical class. Based on who if anyone leaves early this year, the Vols will lose between 12-15 Srs after next season. Hurd is almost certain to leave early along with Barnett. That's somewhere around 12 starters plus some experienced guys who are in the two deep rotation.

Someone has to step up to replace them from the depth chart and then very importantly someone has to step up to replace that guy... and the pool of players to do that will rely heavily on either the '16.... or else Fr from the '17 class.

So in short, if Jones is right about being unable to succeed without experienced depth then this class MUST produce its share of future contributors or else there will be a significant drop off.

Rivals West Coast guy said the USC offer was a game changer.

South Central is my guess as well.

I'm on board with this, too. Here is one of Callahan's comments on TOS:

There were some reasons to think UT could hold onto him, and those were some of the main reasons he chose the Vols. Tennessee running backs coach Robert Gillespie has good relationships with a couple of people close to him, so there's some trust there. But his commitment wasn't able to withstand the continued attention he was getting from Alabama, which has made him a higher priority since he committed to Tennessee, along with Washington, Florida State and now USC.

CBJ does have some serious work to do in order to make this a good class. However, given the state of the current roster, obtaining a top 10 class this year is not essential, IMO. We needed to recruit certain positions well this cycle, and I think we are doing that. IMO, we still need to pick up quality at DT (preferably a HS DT), WR, and OL (specifically OT).

As long as no DE transfers we will be fine at this position

Don't know why they would. If I'm a DE, I'd be drooling to play on this line. Barnett is getting double teamed, while McKenzie and Tuttle are clogging the middle. That leaves you pretty much all by yourself to make big plays because everyone else is being guarded. Guys like Kyle Phillips have a chance to be great with these players beside him.

The second USC offered this was over.

Good luck Jonathan. Hope you have a great career and lose badly in the NC game to UT in 2016 and 2017.

Since the very beginning of this year's class, it has been looked at as a depth class. The reasons being that the instate talent took an uncharacteristic dip, we can't take a full class, and a lot of the higher ranked kids we are going after are wanting to wait till NSD to commit unlike previous years where they would either jump on board and help recruit or be taken off the board.

Now of course, you FF guys will come in here with weeping and gnashing of teeth and try to talk about these "new" and "terrible" revelations, but those of us that closely follow recruiting year round already knew these things. As early as May or June of this year, many posters had already come to the realization that this year's class would be between 15-8 nationally.

It's ok for us to take a non top 5 class every once in a while to be a depth class. This is especially true when we are so well set up for next year's class-- back to top 5.

Solid post. Kongbo still hurts and we must finish strong with Warrior, Brown and Dickerson and a WR but Jones has shown he can do it. This isn't a disaster.... at least not yet.

I don't really know if this year's class can be a "disaster". It certainly can, and most likely will, be a dissapointment for most who are used to top 5 classes. But even with this classes mediocrity, it isn't something that will sink or slow our team's ascent.

Kongbo hurts from a perception standpoint right now. How much additional value would he have really added to next year's team? He's not going to take Barnett's spot. He would have a tough time uprooting Vereen. If Kyle Phillips develops like we all expect him to, would he easily take over his spot on the depth chart? Freak of nature or not, he has only played organized ball for a short period of time, and he has yet to play against guys who can match him physically.

With that said, I would love to have him in this class just in hope that he lives up to the hype. But, how often do one-and-done type talents come out of JUCO?

Our state has never been a strong recruiting ground. We have to be near perfect of the remaining top targets to be top 15
