The Okonya decommit got me thinking. Of the non-JUCO DEs we're looking at now (Keir and Smith) both are EEs and both are likely facing redshirts.

However, 2 of our DEs will exhaust their eligility after 2016, Barnett will likely go pro, and 2 DEs who project to (at least) be contributors (Mixon and Kongbo) will be draft elligible. It's unlikely we lose all of those guys after 2016, but it's possible that we lose anywhere from 2-6 DEs is the point. Our DE rotation in 2017 will likely be some mix of Phillips, Kongbo, Mixon, Taylor, Butcher, and maybe Austin Smith if he grows into a Leo.

Phillips has all the potential in the world, but a track record of getting nicked up. Mixon, I wouldn't be surprised to see pursue greener pastures before 2017. Basically what I'm getting at is that, if possible, the staff probably wants to bring in DEs who can be ready to contribute after a redshirt season. Apparently, Okonya seemed to be further than a redshirt away from that.

IMO, our most likely two deep at DE in 2017 is some combination of Phillips, Kongbo, Taylor, and Butcher. We'll likely need one of our 2016 guys to round out that rotation if we face any injuries.

Reading way too much into this, IMO. Kid was dropped to make room for someone better at the position. Redshirting is not making the staff's decision on whether to accept the commitment or not.

Wikipedia page for the 2016 Outback Bowl doesn't have Gruden and Tirico listed as commentators. Would be a bummer. I want to hear Gruden call a Vols game.

Hubbs said he thinks Kamara stays, and Sutton and JRM take serious looks at the league.

As they should. Grades of Round 2 or better and you have to take the next step. The quicker you get to that 2nd contract the better

Volatil's inlaws live about 30 minutes from bowl. (They are big gator fans) So Volatil has invited all the VFLs to party at their house... If I remember correctly :hi:

😂 Well I'm up for anything

Casino night at hard rock. Some golf, tailgate. I'm up for it all.

So Mixon the backup will be jumping too???? Let's get through the bowl and the 2016 season before the madness starts lol

Yes sir, they need to leave if they get that grade. As soon as you're injured or have a mishap there goes your football livelihood. Make as much money as you can while you can. 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾

I think you might have misread what I said. Mixon will be a backup in 2016 as a junior behind Barnett, Vereen, Lewis, and Phillips at least. Possibly more players depending on how our 2015 redshirts and 2016 recruits turn out.

All I was saying is that it is a possibility for him to be gone via transfer or even a jump to the NFL (though the latter is not very likely) by 2017. So between him and the other 3 DEs we'll likely be losing after 2016, it's probably best for the staff to try and find a DE that can be ready to contribute by 2017. Apparently Okonya seemed to be more of a long term prospect for them.

I don't think we disagree. All I saying is that the staff probably wants a DE whom they think will be ready to contribute by 2017. Bringing in an EE can definitely help with that.
