My Butch list:

pros:
stability (of scheme, of staff, etc)
recruiting
preperation
internal handling of grades and violations

cons:
rigidity to scheme and failed plans
specifically this offense
2nd halves - see also rigidity
uptight with players and media - see also rigidity
Not playing Dobbs earlier - see also rigidity
conservative philosophy - see also rigidity

meh:
press conferences
OK loss (in hindsight because if he won UF game because of the lesson who cares?)
Peterman debacle (in hindsight because it's once he wasn't rigid)

I am willing to concede a lot to Butch, because no coach is ever perfect. Examples for me are his first ever UF game, his first game of this season, etc. My issue is I want to see a direct relationship with particular failures and next actions. Instead it's typically the same dogmatic approach.I have no issue with that global philosophy but I would love some flexibility along the way.

Link? Pretty sure I've read on here (not that VN is infallible) that he came on in Butch's first year.

Regardless, retaining him after 3 years of poor performance is almost as bad.

I don't have a link, but I know it to be true. Bobby Campbell retired in spring of 2011, Hamilton brought in his replacement soon after. Hart was hired in September 2011.

Totally this.

Hart pulls the trigger on Year 2 of Dools and it's a .500 program with upside due to the offense. But that didn't happen. The D being so bad in Year 3 was scheme design for the players on the roster. The O was garlic strong in Year 3. Remember how everybody was surprised and impressed with the D performance under CJJ after what had happened the year before? Then last year it was even better. He had some talent to work with beyond the new recruits. That is not indicative of a program in ruins by any stretch.

I believe both Dooley and Butch played walk ons on defense in the two deep their first years. The defense in year two under Butch was better because of Cam Sutton and a freshman named Derek Barnett. The defense under Dooley may have been the slowest defense I have ever seen fielded at UT. It wasn't ruins but it wasn't very good either.

I agree. In order for it to be considered "In Ruins", I would have to think something catastrophic would have needed to have happened, like........losing to Kentucky and Vanderbilt. :ermm::unsure::blink:

Haha, yep. At a place like UT, losing to Kentucky and Vanderbilt is being at your lowest point.

Not just losing to Vandy. But getting blown out by them.

That Kensucky QB was highly touted tho

Team had developed a quitter attitude, didn't know how to win, frequently rolled over when games got tough (ask Marlon Walls).

Relationships with high school coaches across the state were fractured or broken.

Most of the legacy/in-state class from 2014 was looking to go elsewhere.

OL and DL were headed toward disaster in 2014 regardless of what the new coach did.

No talent at QB.

No talent at WR.

No team speed anywhere.

Special teams were a disaster.

Defense needed yet another scheme change away from the 3-4 disaster.

Yep, looks like death's door to me. Just because Tennessee has a big fanbase and a lot of resources doesn't mean it's an unsinkable ship.

. Spot on

I guess I can understand people quibbling with the phrasing of the football program's state as "ruins." But it was really, really...REALLY bad.

We have lived through the worst stretch of Tennessee football since the 70s...it was in ruins when Johnny came marchin home...and it was in ruins when Butch got here. If Butch does no more than what CJM did, and stabilizes, and rebuilds the program to very good level...he will have earned every penny...and some freakin respect from you bunch of jerkwads.

@JimmyHyams: Bobby Campbell, greenskeeper for natural grass at Neyland Stadium from 1994-2010, was invited to Neyland today to get his opinion on surface

I currently live in JC. We really like it for the most part. I grew up in another part of East TN so I may already have some bias. I miss some of the bigger city luxuries like nicer/better restaurants and movie theaters, but JC is improving in those areas and Bristol just opened a brand new theater which is around 30 mins away. There is also a lot of new shopping opening in Bristol. Asheville is only an hour away and has great food and good shopping as well. Knoxville is about 1.5 hours away so not too far. We drive down a couple of times per month. The city schools in the area are supposed to be pretty good. The county schools not so much, but county schools in general seem to have a lesser reputation than city. (I went to a county school and think I turned out alright.) There are several hospitals around. JC is full of medical offices in part because the med school and VA. I probably haven't lived long enough to get a firm grasp on the variations in cost of living around the state or country, but JC seems to have a low cost of living in my experience.

I don't go to Kingsport too often, but Dobyns Bennett is probably one of the better high schools in the state. Of course Kingsport has Eastman which is the prominent business in the area. Kingsport doesn't seem to have too much to offer in the way of things to do, although I have heard good things about the parks. JC has more things for the younger crowd due to ETSU being in the middle of the city. It is definitely noticeable when summer comes because the roads and city are less crowded without so many students. The area has good outdoor recreation with parks and hiking just minutes away. Good places to ski in NC only an hour away. Unfortunately, the local lake in JC will be empty for a few years due to a sink hole near or under the damn, so that has caused a lot of people to put there homes for sale that are on the lake. But there are other lakes nearby such as Watauga which is very pretty.

Sorry for the sloppiness of the post but hope that helps!

Hate to bring this up but you seem to be knowledgeable of the area so I thought I would ask. I may be moving to that area soon after I graduate, and I cover prep athletics in Chattanooga right now and would love to continue that wherever I go. Therefore, I was wondering what are the papers or websites that have sports coverage high school, collegiately or whatever it may be.

EDIT: I see your name is MedVol. Are you a doctor?
