We don't hold a candle to Notre Dame academically but OSU is not that much better than us....

I think its funny that he mentioned academics...since when do top recruits major in anything harder than basket weaving :)

UT has some good business and engineering programs...and it is VERY difficult to compare strengths really. But, here are some numbers as food for thought....

Overall College Rankings:
Notre Dame: 19
tOSU: 57
UT: 96

Civil Engineering (Graduate, I think):
ND: 46
tOSU: 36
UT: 55

MBA:
ND: 39
tOSU: 22
UT: Not in top 50 (does have a top 10 Supply Chain/Logistics MBA, though)

These last two aren't necessarily undergraduate rankings...but it gives some points of comparison. Like I said though, the numbers really don't mean much. But it does provide evidence as to why a kid like Wells would make the comment he made.

Honestly, I find myself respecting the kid for choosing a school that will give him a strong degree in case his hopes of playing pro ball don't pan out. Hate that it is going to be in scarlet and not orange, but the kid definitely has a good head on his shoulders. He's also the kind of kid that probably won't get into any trouble.

He probably wouldnt get in trouble unless he came to Tennessee... all joking aside, I think we missed out on a good one. Wells has size, speed, and strength at a position that the Big Orange desperatly needs...

Just give me EJ Abrams-Ward, Quinton Coples, Antoine Mcclain, and Enrique Davis and ill be happy... the chances of that happening are slim to none though :ermm:

True..in Supply Chain/Logistic business, you can truly put UT's program up against anyone's - Ivy League or not (undergrad or grad). However, on the whole, it is understandable why Wells said what he said.

Who cares about business school rankings? Tennessee has an excellent placement department, and an excellent business school. Tons of companies hire Tennessee business grads. Those rankings you have are based on a formula, whereas there are some things you cannot compute into a formula or are too complicated for a formula including quality of faculty, or avg. salary per graduate. Heck Dave Ramsey the radio guy has a degree from the UT college of business.

BTW if you do care about rankings, here's a good one for you-Forbes Inc. has ranked the University of Tennessee College of Business Administration’s FT MBA program 24 th in the U.S.

The Wall Street Journal ranks UT MBA Program #12.

As for the "formula" ... if you look at my posts, I acknowledge that numbers are a very bad way of categorizing these things. It is very difficult (as I said earlier) to assign rankings. I'm aware of the MBA rankings - and how good the Logistics program is, as I also pointed out.

Do you think that Notre Dame or Ohio State have not produced successful graduates? No one said UT sucked - the point was that numbers like these are often how high school students assess the relative value of programs. Based on these numbers, the point is, it would seem that Mr. Wells did not make an unreasonable decision if he was looking for a stronger school, academically speaking.

I think that it is more useful, though, to discuss the undergraduate programs than graduate programs, since that is what he is entering school for. It is hard to find free rankings (and again - who knows how valuable that really is) for undergraduate programs; however, I did find those for the business school, as I posted. I could not find undergraduate civil engineering rankings. Also, the first post of Overall College Rankings is an undergraduate list.

These points weren't being made to put down the quality of a UT education. I firmly believe you can do whatever you want with a degree from UT. However, my point was just to say that there is a reasonable explanation of why a high school student would consider ND and tOSU better academic schools than UT.

belmont and lipscomb can concentrate more on those fields. UT is a state school and therefore must cover the entire spectrum. They offer anything you would ever want to do.

To answer an earlier question, it was said that Wells had a 4.5 GPA (No, that's not typo -- a 4.5) and was majoring in Engineering.
