I'm only seeing 2 losses tops

Arkansas will be a dog fight bro.

Arkansas plays A&M at home, Vols here, then at Bama (tough stretch). They lost 4 defensive starters who were big play makers for them. Their QB plays much better with time, which he shouldn't have much of against us. They are a much different team on the road. They've got to be the most over-hyped team of the year. If we can't take care of business with them, it will be less because of what they do but more of us not playing to our full potential.

No, I'm not underestimating where the Vols should be right now under Butch Jones.

Mizzou loses too much production this year. They should not be able to dominate our o-line again. They do not have as many weapons on offense. They aren't as talented and we no longer have an experience gap.

If we lose to Arkansas at home, I can't understand how we can interpret that any way except: Bieliema is a better football coach than Butch. He's not out-recruiting Butch. He's a third year coach just like Butch. Butch can't lose this game in Knoxville.

Lol. People are so ridiculous. So if Dobbs throws 2 pick sixes in the 4th quarter and Arkansas squeaks past us than Bielema is a better coach. How the heck can you judge 2 different coaches and 2 different programs with hundreds of 18 year Olds on a 1 game snapshot?

Clearly the OP has never actually participated in competitive sports or he would understand that the best team or best man doesn't always win. Go play your nintendo, man.

I don't think it's fair to say Bielema is better than CBJ if Arky wins.

Nick Saban's first Bama team lost to ULM and whoever their coach was. Will Muschamp's inferior UF team beat the crap out of Mark Richt's UGA last year. And only a few years back, Butch lost to Derek frickin Dooley.

Are any of the winning coaches here better than the losing coach? Nope.

The two takeaways are:
-there are so many other factors in football besides head coaching ability. Talent, experience, depth, home field, specific matchups, injuries, etc. The list goes on and on.
-Even when everything seems to line up well for one team, football is often an unpredictable sport. Many good teams with good coaches have had inexplicable losses from time to time (like 2013 SC against us). Uncharacteristically good/poor performances happen.

Coaches are better or worse than each other based on their overall body of work, and how they perform relative to what they have. Not one single game.

Quoted for sooooooo much truth. Thanks, GBO97, very well put.

Nine at least

You're not alone, I have seen a few set the 9 win floor. I will say this, If we win 8 next year, I have a feeling it would be a waste of
Your time trying to convince VN that Jones is not the guy.

All the Tennessee hype is based off a strong finish (SC, UK, Vandy, Iowa). Arkansas very similar finished by beating (and dominating) Ole Miss, LSu, and Texas. You tell me which one is more impressive? Hint. It's not close.

Dpattr, I'm gonna use "confidence" instead of "hype" since I don't think there's anything unreasonable about my expectations for 2015.

So, to respond...I can't speak for everyone else, but my confidence in Team 119 stems from much more than just the last five games of 2014:
  • Trust in Butch Jones and the coaching staff, that trust in turn based on their performance ... not just at Tennessee, but in other places as well
  • Assessment (reaffirmed by countless sources) after watching last season, this spring camp, and other venues like The Opening with Josh Dobbs, that we have very talented players all over this team, an uncommon number of them ... coupled with the fact that we have more returning starters than any other team in the conference, and great experience in our two-deep
  • Observation that the chemistry (mental and emotional interaction, stability, energy) of Team 119 has evolved in the direction I've seen of other high-performing teams and organizations
That's why I say that every year from here on, including this coming season, is a potential championship run for the Vols. We might win 8 in the regular season, we might win 10 ... but we're definitely going to be relevant.

Can't guarantee the same for Arkansas. They ended last year very strong ... but I haven't been watching them since to measure all these other indicators.

We'll see when we play in October, that's for sure.

Go Vols!

Good points. But until I see (for myself) that Oline look sufficient for the SEC, I'm not betting the farm. Which isn't saying much given I don't have a farm.

Not close ?? When did ARK's 2014 strength appear (in the W column)?

Them --
L to Aub, A&M, Bama, GA, Miss State, Mizz.
W LSU, Ole Miss (11/15, 11/22)

Us --
L to OK, GA, FL, Ole M, Bama, Mizz.
W SC, KY

Hint: it's not really THAT Far. 119's O-line will be much more competitive, and a more experienced D (with a loss mainly only of AJJ) will limit the very strong dual-run attack and keep the air manageable. A very, winnable game, far from "not close."

Tennessee finished strong, found their QB leader, and didn't lose any key contributors (aside from Johnson). Also, the past 2 recruiting classes have been amazing.

Arkansas lost key defensive players. They haven't recruited near as well - I think less than 5 4 star or better defensive players in the past 2 years. So nobody to restock. And their offense is one-dimensional and lackluster. Last year, they caught the Hyde version of Wallace, not to mention Ole Miss was down their difference maker on offense. The LSU win was impressive, though LSU was having a way down year, and again both games were home for Arky. And well Texas was bad last year.

So, I don't think it is close as to which team is more impressive. Tennessee is a better team. Arkansas will not be as good as some are predicting.

my response was to Arkansas being overhyped coming into season, comparing that to Tennessee, and the way both teams finished. if you think Vandy and UK are as good as Ole Miss and LSU, and that Iowa is better than Texas that is your opinion, but not for most.

I wasn't talking about anything in regards to this years game or teams, just about the Arkansas being overhyped coming into this season. their late season wins were impressive.

If it makes you feel better, I understood :)

Do you not think that the Vols can win 8-9 games?

I know the question was not directed to me but if you are ok with me responding - I Think 8-9-10 wins are all possible. The question is, are 2 losses all that are seeable. Is it out of the realm of normality to envision a 3rd loss?

Right now the only games I think Tennessee will lose are Arkansas,Georgia and Alabama. I'll be dancing in the streets if the Vols go 9-3 this season. If Tennessee goes 10-2 Butch Jones should be SEC Coach of the Year.
