Official Global Warming thread (merged)

3/10

1990 is just the chosen reference point - probably because it’s the base year for the Kyoto Protocol. The projected rate is from the third assessment report.

Global mean sea level has risen ~8 inches over the past century. It’s expected to continue accelerating, adding a couple of feet this century and several meters in coming centuries if the ice sheets do indeed collapse. That’s bad news for the hundreds of millions of people (including many Americans) living in low-lying coastal areas. No joke

If I throw a few ice cubes in glass and fill it with water, will it overflow when the ice cubes melt?

You need to learn the McDadian scale before you even try. Your rating makes you look like the little boy picked last in the kickball game.

But I thought it was the arctic that's melting? I didn't figure you as a climate white knight.

It is too, I'm not, and your comment was easy fodder for the "were all going to drown in 10 years" crowd. Surprised BW didn't hit it. Although he may not have known either.

It's bad news for the people over several centuries? Who is living in the coastal areas who will still be alive in 300+ years.

And my joke was way better than 3/10. C'mon, man..credit where it's due.
Eh, you’ve had better. It came across forced and the number was off. The joke doesn’t exactly work the same with an 8 inch rise… though I’m sure you could make a new funny with that.

Anyway, who do you think is paying for Miami’s new $500 million pump system? How about the never-ending beach renourishment projects up and down our coasts? Or federally subsidized flood and crop insurance? FEMA?

Coastal flooding is already a growing problem today, even in sunny weather. In bad weather AGW only adds to the storm surge. Who do you think will pay for all this as **** really hits the fan? This isn’t a hypothetical problem 300 years from now, this is happening here and now. It's costing us now.

It is telling though, how callously you disregard the well-being of future generations…

I take it you have children, McDAD?

It seems you’ve already forgotten these posts from the Antarctica thread.

What happens to the glass of water when we add ice that wasn’t in there to begin with?
Here is worst case scenario. We could live with it and adapt. Australia would get their ass kicked.

Are you suggesting we keep burning fossil fuels 'business-as-usual' and just abandon the coasts (i.e. half the world’s infrastructure)?

Even with other impacts aside, how could that possibly be less expensive than weaning ourselves off of fossil fuels?

Lots and lots of jobs related to construction. Lol.
