I think UT Basketball is the only one that used the gray. I've seen this from most sports (Soccer, Baseball, etc)

The recruits aren't running things. Butch and company is just smart enough to realize Nike is more fashionable/desirable. Adidas doesn't even appeal to probably 90% of people. I've maybe had 2 pair of Adidas in my 32 yrs of life. I don't wear a lot of UT gear because I don't want an Adidas hat and shirt with Nike shoes. Tacky to me. Maybe not to everyone, but for the majority, Nike puts out cooler looking stuff. It only make sense to me. Adidas is kind of a turn off, if you will. Where as Nike is sexy.

Adidas= lipstick on a pig.
Nike= Model in lingerie

We just got better looking in most people's opinion no matter how stupid it may sound, but that's how it is. And it can only help

This is kind of like a Chevy over Ford thing. Ruger vs Winchester, Budweisir vs Bud light, etc. It's preference. Most people with a fashionable side favor Nike. More plain people may prefer Adidas. Then some humble folks just don't care and thankful for whatever they can get.

I agree that all of this is subjective.

I am not a fashionable person, I am over 35. Most of my clothes have labels that are on the inside. I hate to admit it, but I avoid New York, or Paris, at all costs during fashion week. I understand it has become intolerable with the whole "swoosh" verse "three stripes" debate that has been raging in the fashion world.

Nothing on that jersey a few posts back looks like what DP has suggested but that white collar looks interesting due to one of the 119 photos.
