I suppose it's possible. Of course CM has a recruiting class to sign as well. I can't say if I were AD at CM that I would hamstring our class to help TN solidify theirs. Jmo

If they really want someone from Butch's coaching tree and that person is on our staff, then they will wait, if that is the request of that particular individual. Once again, if this is the case, then I think it speaks volumes of the respect that the individual involved has for Butch and not wanting to hamstring the momentum this program has right now. CM can still tell its recruits who they will hire, and that particular individual could even make phone calls to those recruits. It's not too far fetched if you ask me, but also none of this may be true either. JMO TIFWIW

Here is what is funny. Some of you think that the reason Butch is delaying announcing Debord until after NSD is because of the negative reaction from this message broad!? Now that is funny. I think some posters miiiiight have a slightly inflated view of the weight that the opinion they spew on here carries with the people that matter at UT. I love that this board exists and enjoy the updates of information that usually reach this board before news outlets. But the opinions shared on this site are like the National Enquirer, fit entertainment purposes only. They certainly do not dictate the actions of CBJ or the UT administration.

Naming DeBord OC today or the day after NSD IMO doesn't matter. Current commits didn't flinch when CMB walked. I don't think DeBord being named OC would have them even flinch. IMO folks are putting too much stock in this hire making any difference at all in recruiting. I still think Butch does it on ESPNU on NSD. Just more Orange pub.

Too late. It's a done deal. In fact, I have hand picked our offensive coaches and assistants right here on VN.

Volitil is the kicking coach. Got his son a scholly already.

Tux reluctantly agreed to be QB coach, and will be implementing new mutton footballs. (Had to arrange a meeting at his table to talk business)

Lebvol kindly accepted the role of counting.. things..

Pattycake has to be a cheerleader :air_kiss:

Vol Lady's job is to makes sure we are getting enough fluids. And medicine.

Glichten writes poems for the team as inspiration.

Volssam has the special job of implementing gifs on the jumbo tron to distract the opposing teams offense.

Bob Mueller as stat keeper. (I checked them)

And Butchna is just my bit... I mean personal assistant.

Spot for team physician open?
Can also handle vet duties...hybrid role.

Exactly. This hire directly affects on the field play next year, and that could affect next year's recruiting. Not this years class

Interesting, that would be a good stage to announce something of that nature.

Right after we land Richmond, Butch comes on and says we were able to land Drew because he is so excited to come play for our new OC ___________!!!

Volnation would explode!

I think he is trying to tame any potential negativity through NSD. We have momentum and someone like Richmond a slight bit of negativity could be difference

I guess if he needs to mitigate any potential negative recruiting from other schools, that's a pretty valid reason to hold off. They'll use anything they can.

I had a vision. At the SEC media days Butch walks up to Saban slaps him on the azz and says " Let's dance Frodo " and walks away.

That's some funny stuff right there, I don't care who you are. Except I think Butch would call Saban "Smeagol" considering Butch is leading us to the mountain and he is just about a half inch taller than Saban.

I'm of two minds with this. If this whole thing blows up it will be CBJ that gets fired, and since he's the one who will be held accountable he's the one who should be making the decision. On the other hand there should be some outside influence that at least bends his ear a bit to help develop his thinking (probably not us on the message boards, but maybe people in the AD).

I'll try not to complain too much until we see how it works out.

It's worth noting that if he hires Debord it would be pretty clear he's doing the exact opposite thing that CDD and CPF did when they hired Sunseri and Clawson. He's going for continuity and familiarity rather than trying to tear the whole system down and rebuild it in a crucial year for him. Debord may have a history with more of a pro-style offense but if he's hired he'll run CBJ's offense. With their prior relationship CBJ can be sure of that. I don't think it's all that hard for a good offensive mind to jump between different styles of offense. A lot of the concepts about how to apply pressure to a defense have to be the same.

I completely agree with that first paragraph. Coaches live and die by their many decisions. Who they hire under them is as big as any, and it's their jobs on the line. Getting opinions from people who actually know what they're talking about is always a good idea.

Hyams said DeBord used a West Coast passing scheme much like what Butch uses. He said the running aspects would be quite a bit different. That was on 104.5 this morning.

DeBord certainly isn't an exciting hire, but he's also probably more inclined to stick around than a hot shot from wherever. Jones likes his continuity, but this hire is pretty new territory for him with Bajakian leaving.

That is very likely. Butch knows how to leverage publicity to its very best.

I also don't believe any OC hire will have a negative impact on our recruiting. What many people fail to realize is that even though Thig, Azzani, Elder are all great recruiters; Butch is probably the best in the country. As long as he is here recruiting will be A-ok.

I want to use my 100th post to say GBFO! I mostly lurk and want thank everyone for what they bring to this forum. It has become a daily habit. Can't wait for the season to start. Boom on finishing strong again with recruiting. Butch gets it.

Congrats on hitting your one 100th. Post more.

Now a little advice. Don't start a thread until you've had at least 1000 post. It doesn't matter how well thought out you think your thread is........if you don't have at least 1000 post, the thread will be stupid. It's been proven time and time again on here.

:good!:

Does anyone else think it's a little weird that Jones has to explain himself at all if he hires DeBord? If the guy truly is the best fit with him, the other coaches, and the players, it's exactly who he should hire. After all, it doesn't matter who he hires, the proof will come in next year's pudding anyway.

I guess I expect too much in thinking "we" should at least wait until the first jet sweep to start whining about it. Reading some comments in the FF (I know, I know), you'd think people were ready to turn in their fan cards based on a coordinator hire.

On the flip side, the last couple of coordinator hires made in the middle of a head coach's tenure have been monumental failures. Well, I guess I answered my own question there. Had Clawson and Sunseri not been so bad year-one, this fan base would probably be quite a bit more relaxed.

I think he's doing a great job of managing perceptions. The large, supportive fanbase is a big part of Butch's recruiting spiel. If you want to sell the one big happy family concept, you need to keep people happy.

When DeBord unleashed such a backlash of negativity-- warranted or not-- Butch knew he had to manage the reaction and do what he thought best for the program while being responsive to the fanbase and mindful of the media. One by one, the candidates everybody wanted are being crossed off the list-- for plausible reasons. Soon only one will be left. Voila-- we've looked coast to coast and this is the best man for the job! Negativity diffused. Goal accomplished. Fanbase pacified and everybody happy with an impressive recruiting haul. Butch is a master.

Since I can't get an answer to this in the other thread I was asking about it, I'll try the more popular thread. Can anyone clarify what Brent Hubbs said on the radio yesterday? What I heard, or at least thought I heard, was that some current recruits, some of whom are well liked by the fans, could be asked to look around to make room for Butch's NSD surprises. I'm not looking to come in here and stir up who those recruits might be, I'm just hoping for clarification on whether I heard what Hubbs was saying properly. I don't have a subscription to his site, maybe one of you do, but what was said was on the radio yesterday afternoon. Can anyone clarify if I heard correctly?

Not sure about Hubbs but GFW alluded to Butch being in on some big targets that will sign with us on NSD. Room will have to be made.

May want to read the Drew Richmond thread from last night.

He and GFW both said to expect some "decommits" on NSD, as well as some "upgrades"

He definitely does some things with an eye toward the fans. I was just thinking aloud why the fans were so worked up about it. The last two mid-term coordinator hires are a big reason I think. Once we put those firmly in the rear view, it won't be so bad--maybe.

IDK about yesterday, but Hubbs and others have said that we will lose a couple more recruits. The general feeling was that we have some recruits that were taking visits elsewhere that might flip. Those players are now looking solid (with one possible exception), so there probably will be a few decommits.
