'15 MD OT Pat Allen

Their performance under Pittman had them considered as 5 of the top OL in the SEC. Their performance under the new staff had one of them considered good, the other 4 not so much. You don't see how other schools could use that negatively against us?

Ah, I was thinking Pittman was there when they were seniors. My bad. Bit I still wouldn't attribute it to coaching. Pittmans last year was the year Bray, hunter, and the great passing attack finished. The following year was new QB and loss of potent passing attack. Still had the best running game in severalyears but pre-season expectations were unrealistic

I said this before in another thread. Former Vol lineman who knows his stuff said he would hate to be a lineman in this offense because his entire life he was a hand in the dirt guy. It is an extremely difficult scheme to learn. But, for guys used to the opposite scheme is it almost impossible in a time frame that spans one year.
BUT, if you are used to it or once you really learn it, it is something that is beautiful to watch. He said give it time and you will see.

Someone told me what those big 5 we are talking about actually went through with all the changes, that by their senior year, which was Jones'first, they were just interested in getting through it and getting to the NFL. They never really bought in. I can't blame them but the new scheme did not help them more than bad coaching. Unless you want the turnover in coaching that Dooley caused to be considered.
What I don't understand is I thought we were doing zbs before Butch. What kind of exotic blocking schemes are we trying to do that is so vastly different than the other ones already discussed ad nauseum?

Phil Steele, a respected and well-known CFB guy, had 3 UT OL on the 2013 All-SEC 2nd Team. 2 went undrafted and 1 was in the 6th Round. James is the only one that was drafted high and he was 3rd Team preseason All-SEC.

You don't think a guy trying to convince a high schooler to go to Y school and not X school would use a legit source like Phil Steele?

Right, wrong, good, bad, lies, truth, etc. Don't matter in recruiting. Their job is to get the guy to sign a LOI and get feet on campus.

Mahoney has to be the most unfairly derided coach on our staff this year. He has an excellent history of uncovering and developing great O-linemen.

Mahoney recruited and developed the #1 NFL Draft pick in 2013 (Eric Fisher). It's true that Mahoney only coached him one year out of four, but it's also true that he was only a 2 star recruit that very few big-name schools were interested in. Mahoney thought Fisher had NFL potential in spite of this, even before he set foot on campus.

Mahoney also developed NFL talent Jason Kelce.

His O-lines have typically performed very, very well after a few years of development. In his 3rd year at CMU, his O-line allowed only 1.2 sacks per game. He developed several All Big East linemen at Cincinnati. Also worth noting that the O-line was one of the big strengths at Cincinnati this season.

I think this is a case where a few people are looking at the past year and concluding that this staff can't coach O-linemen, even though, it was left with very limited talent at that position for 2014. As for 2013, the O-line performed fairly well, even in spite of learning a completely new scheme.

I think most high school OL looking at Tennessee would be familiar with Mahoney's history and would care more about that than any sort of shallow observations. I think most recruits would be smart enough to see through this type of stuff and look at the actual record of Mahoney and Butch Jones.

And I'm really hoping we get Allen.

thanks bo

He never should've been hired in the first place. We had a great coach in that position who badly wanted to stay.

it's part of the family feel Jones promotes to bring his entire staff.

If D Blair matures this may be the most improved o line in recent NCAA history

That being said Pitman is a stud

Problem is, this is the SEC. You want to recruit 6'4" OL over and over, be my guess, but don't expect to be around very long. I don't care what you did to get here, once you are here you have to prove your worth. Cool story bro time, I knew a kid, love him to death, had about a 3.6 GPA in a MS in Organic Chemisty. He goes to PhD school and his advisor told him this, "I don't give two s@@@@ how you got here, now that you are here you have to prove you belong here." 3.6 GPA in a masters degree in Organic Chemistry, great track record in school, but the big boys at the PhD school don't care about any of that once you are accepted. He was back home in two years because of the pressure and standards that was put on him at his PhD program. Point is, no matter what you've done, you will always have to prove your worth to continue to move up in this world.

The oline is a difficult position to evaluate even for nfl scouts. The only guy that draft stock dropped honestly was tiny because of injury. If you honestly think stone and Fulton were higher on teams draft boards before their senior season your fooling yourself. The fact that 3 of our 5 oline guys started on a nfl team this year is all butch has to say. You can put a negative spin on it if you want but those 3 guys are in the league playing and tiny will probably be if he gets healthy.

Coach Mo brings great energy to the program. Don't know why people want to get rid of him. We will get results as the line grows and develops.

It's been an unfair assessment. I'm not saying he's a great or a bad oline coach. The truth is we don't have enough data to assess him fairly. The first year we had a good line but very few skill players and a defense that couldn't run me down. The second year, we had a lot of young skill players but hardly any healthy or experienced lineman. I can see our line making great strides this next year. I'm hoping it turns out to be much like our defensive turn around from the first year. You hardly ever hear anything bad about the defensive coordinator any more. He didn't become a genius in 12 months, he just had some talent to work with this year.

3 of 5 yep.

I feel terrible for tiny

The UGA offers going out def tell the story with Allen IMO.

It may have something to do with Allen since the Vols have had most of the momentum.

But there's a couple things going on right now. There's a guy that may not make it in and you always have a coach who will evaluate prospects and may offer some guys that the previous coach did not offer.

Tiny Richardson's draft stock drop had absolutely nothing to do with Jones, the ZBS, or Mahoney and 100% to do with the fact that his knees are so shredded he couldn't even pass a physical.

Just for the record.
