'15 TN DE Kyle Phillips (UT commit 1/3/15)

The gMe I watched he didn't even play DE the whole game. Absurd talent. I'm still shocked we got him and then how well he showed out in the Army bowl.

I don't know why you are shocked that a top Tennessee player chose to go to his home state university, that the way it's supposed to be.

He's always going to stand up some, but he's strickly 90%+ plus the time a pass rusher now. Being a SLB requires a lot more than just being a pass rusher, as I'm sure everyone on here is well aware. I'd leave the SLB position to Weatherd/Bates.

He was always at DE in we were in nickel, which is what we will run ~70% of the time. Another 10% of the time we are in our sub package (3-3-5) where he still has his hand in the ground. When we actually run our base 4-3, you get the best guys on the field. I would agree that if Weatherd or Bates can come along quickly enough to fill that role, I would much rather have Maggitt out there at DE. So far Weatherd has been a blitz/spy specialist and Bates got hurt so only time will tell how it will shake. Either way, trying to find the best way to get all of this talent on the field is a great problem to have.

They only use him at SLB in the 4-3 and a lot of the time he was standing on the line of scrimmage to the side of a DE. For all intents and purposes, he's still setting the edge in this position.

He was lined up behind the DL a few times and was still able to shoot the gap and cause some havoc. I like what he can do at SLB when we play teams that want to try to line up with multiple TEs and pound the rock. His skill set can be applied more effectively this way against teams that want to do that. Maggit is still a bit undersized to play full time DE. Standing him up in our 4-3 (which we don't use all that often anyway) is a good move IMO. We've done it a lot this year and it has worked. Why change Maggit's role and make him only a DE? He's thrived in a hybrid role.

eVOL I told everyone this kid is and probably will be a Leonard Little type at DE. He's easily the fastest guy I have ever seen off the ball. I say this with high regard as I trained him some. I've been around UT and football a long dadblame time. I've stood on the field and watched from LL, Shaun Ellis, Clowney etc. Kyle's speed off the edge is unmatched. What I said in an earlier post was just this and it showed in the AA game. No matter whom they put on his side it was like road runner and Wiley coyote. This kid is a freak of nature. At out camp he weighed in at a outta shape due to injury and surgery 272 and ran a 4.6. Now that he's learned to use his hands watch out the sky is the limit. The stuff NFL vet and now coach Nick Eason taught me will take KP to whatever level he wants to go. GO VOLS

How did Barnett look in high school? Did you honestly expect the amount of success he has had?

That ranking also pushes Kyle past our buddy Drew Richmond as the number 1 player in the state on the composite rankings. And his composite score will still probably get better once everyone else re-ranks.

Hell yeah to everything going on in this thread. De1 making me like Phillips even more and then he gets that bump as well. This guy is going to be such a monster in Orange!

defensive line coach steve stripling on five-star defensive end kyle phillips: "kyle has size, range and speed and is just starting to realize his potential. Being a mid-year addition will be a great benefit for his development. He has all the tools to be successful at the university of tennessee."
