Not sure if posted, but Jakob Johnson may have to have season ending shoulder surgery, and Kenny Bynum would start at Mike

Last year it was thumbs and wrists this year it's shoulders and high ankle sprains. Bynum will be fine at Mike but it would be nice to have both for the bowl.

We are set at LB with this and last season's class. Will still need to add each year, but the nucleus for greatness is there. Actually the nucleus for greatness is in every position on defense after this year's class reports. Offense is still a work in progress, but improving.

Eventually the offense will come to life with the athletes we have now at the skill positions. We obviously need a little more on the oline, but we'll get there. The only way to gain experience with the situation we were in was to fight through a season like this.

Championship caliber programs are built around defense. We're going to overwhelm some teams next year I think. Could be dominant. Love the talent this staff continues to reel in on that side of the ball.

Fortenberry posted an updated EE list after the DK commitment....

1. Quentin Dormady
2. Jauan Jennings
3. Alvin Kamara
4. Chance Hall
5. Jack Jones
6. Shy Tuttle
7. Andrew Butcher
8. Darrin Kirkland
9. Stephen Griffin

If UT were to land Kyle Phillips and Ugo Amadi, they would also be EEs. 11 possibly this year and we had what 13-14 last year?

This is an awesome list. Hits pretty much all of the immediate needs.

He'll be the breakout player for the defense next year. Dude is an absolute animal. Has good speed & he's violent.

I thought he was as good this year on special teams as Maybin was last year.

Probably a testament to the overall talent improvement on our roster that he didn't stand out this year like Maybin did last year.

If we get just 3-4 immediate contributors out of the EEs and 2-3 out of the summer arrivals, I really like our chances of competing for the East next year.

With the low amount of attrition this year, the 2015 Vols will be a significantly improved version of the 2014 team that was 4 points away from going to Atlanta.

RB loses Lane and Scott, adds Kamara and freshman depth = upgrade
WR is a year older and adds Williams = upgrade
OL is a year older, adds Blair, Jones, and freshman depth = upgrade
TE loses Helm, gains Creamer and Oliver = even
QB loses Worley and Peterman (probable), adds QD and JJ = upgrade

DL loses Jordan Williams, adds Tuttle, McKenzie, Picou = major upgrade
DE loses Hendrix, adds Butcher, Ford, Taylor, and Phillips (probable) = upgrade
LB loses A.J., adds Kirkland and Smith = even depending on Bates' and McDowell's progress
DB loses Coleman, adds Amadi (probable) and other freshman depth = upgrade

I was talking about the middle of the season. So, maybe a year and a half. Either way it is a year more than the freshman has.

Really not trying to nitpick argue with you...I see your point...mine is that he was a highly rated recruit who really didn't get an appreciable backup experience...potentially there's some promise lost here, but we'll never know. If we land Love or Reid we may just be in as good as shape. JMO

I get it. I'm not saying the guy was ever going to be the best back on the roster (though he might have with enough development), but I'd like our depth a lot more with him than without him.

Mostly agree except at LB. You don't lose AJ, add Fr and Soph bodies and call it even, none of em having played any MLB in college. That's a major loss for us and the biggest question mark on how our defense performs next year.

That said, dang we gon be even better on D

Yeah, I debated on calling that one a downgrade but I wanted to keep the positive mojo going.

if last weeks rumors about josh malone being unhappy were true, you would have never known it by watching practice today. Malone was flying around the practice field, motivating teammates and playing with much more effort than he did in some of the later practices of the regular season. There is no way of knowing what caused the sudden change in malone’s demeanor, but it was obvious that something was much different in his approach this afternoon. There has never been a question about malone’s ability, and if today is a preview of things to come then the future for malone at tennessee is very bright.

Stand your ground. They are losing one really good LB. They are not losing one, some would say two, really good LBs that will only get stronger and better in JRM and CM depending on how they play CM. Bynum and JJ are getting experience. Bates and McDowell got a little experience. Bryant will be ready to go. All will be stronger and more ready. Add in the new guys - that's more than even in my book.
