Michigan Contacted CBJ per FootballScoop (merged)

For all we know, mutual interest=Butch's agent trying to get him a big raise by leaking this.

@wesrucker247: Not rumors. Michigan and Butch have mutual interest on some level. Known. RT @JTRock21: @wesrucker247 where are people seeing these rumors?

@wesrucker247: Universities are throwing more and more money into coaches. I don’t blame coaches for using that market to make more money. Who wouldn’t?

@wesrucker247: Butch is no different from most other coaches. You wait to see which jobs are opened to see which ones you can leverage for the most money.

Yep. Context sure makes things sound a lot different than somebody cherry picking quotes in the hopes of a Kiffin to UT reprise...

@ZachAFT: Butch Jones will get a raise, b/c of the Michigan opening, but he isn't going anywhere.

@ZachAFT: @pdcsdaddy @wesrucker247 is as good as it gets. I'm sure he's right. But I think any interest will be used for raise for himself/staff.

@withrowzone: I don't think Butch Jones is going anywhere. I also believe Dave Hart shouldn't misplay his hand in this contract negotiation.

You do realize hudspeth makes over 1 million currently per his new contract. And Stoops made 2.2 million this year at Kentucky, Ken-freaking-tucky is paying 2.2 million and you think UT will get a good coach for under that.

Coaching at some schools is a job, coaching at UT is part of not just your life but part of your family's life, for better or worse. The commitment that it takes at a major program especially one in the SEC is on a whole other scale from coaching at a school like ULL. I'm not sure how people cannot understand that?

$2mil was a generic, even number. The point is it would not and should not take $3.5mil to get someone like Hudspeth. The OP I responded to said you'd have to pay the next guy more than Butch. It's a better job at this point and shouldn't take the same money.

Stoops is over $3mil now cause he took a 2 win team to a competitive 5 win team and has already secured a top 25 class at freaking UK.

Hudspeth is 46 with a ton more HC experience than McElwain and hasn't sniffed a higher level job. Increasing his salary 2.5x to start would be where I'd start. If you're in the tripling salary business from the get-go I hope you have some openings. Id love to work for you.

@ZachAFT: I can tell you that Butch Jones hasn't discussed Michigan, or leaving UT, w/ commits/HS coaches I've spoke with.

This would be the death of UT football. Only thing that would save it would be to bring in huge name. That being said, hope we don't have to worry about it.

It is hard to express how joyful I would be if Butch got on that MIchigan plane. I know I am in the extreme minority here on that. I believe with all my heart that David Cutcliffe could come in here next year and win 10 games.
Crazy absolute craziness.. I love Cut also.. But with the recruits comin in we would not be signing some of the key guys..

Maybe this rumor is going around bout Butch is other coaches negative recruiting towards Butch and it's making the recruits think again about Tennessee..

Michigan could hire Butch. But if you read the UM message boards that seems laughable. Definitely would not light up the fan base and that would be a critical mistake by the AD after the Hoke fiasco. Butch appears to be like another Hoke to most of their fans.

With what he has going on here if Butch were to leave it would say a lot about what kind of administration we have at UT.

Do the names Mike Hamilton and Derek Dooley ring a bell with you?

This is why you dont get attached to coaches anymore they have no loyalties to the schools they coach for, to them its a business and money is business

Again possibly you save money on the contracts end, it likely isn't as big a savings as you're thinking but maybe you save some there. Even then you have the risk of the recruiting class blowing up (usually not as bad as some suspect but you still take a hit there), losing some fan support, and some donor support. A hire like Dooley for instance costs you more than just the contract amount. That's just not worth the risk for most major athletic departments and I'm betting Hart will agree. I'm not saying Butch has exceeded expectations on the field but as far as money the AD is bringing in currently he is worth more than just his on field record.

To give you a idea of how much is at risk and this is a little hard to piece together because some of the buyout of Dooley and his assistants are included in here.

In 2008 the AD's total revenue was close to 102 million, we fell to 63 million in total revenue after Dooley was mercifully fired. Now donations are up, ticket sales are up, recruiting is trending up, UT is headed to a bowl and about to add that revenue. Why would you blow the wheels off for pocket change and even a million a year is pocket change currently.
