Michigan Contacted CBJ per FootballScoop (merged)

"I did not have sexual relations with that woman."
-Bill Clinton

(Was later found to have had sexual relations with said woman.)

You COMPLETELY misinterpreted that quote.

He said: "I did not have sex with that woman... Ms Lewinski".

The "that woman" in that statement wasn't Monica. It was Hillary. The object of his message was "Ms Lewinski". So while you and most of America thought he was denying one thing... he was actually just reassuring Monica that he had not had sex with Hillary.

RE: the OP.

There is ALWAYS an element of "plausible deniability" in these things. Most coaches do not want to panic their current teams and fanbases by showing open interest. They also do not want to be the guy who wasn't chosen. Likewise schools don't want to be the program that was turned down.

Usually the first time there will be "official" acknowledgement from either side is when the prospective job is MUCH bigger than the current job (CSU to UF, LT to UT, Cincy to UT, Ark St to Aub) or else when the deal is done.

Michigan must hit a home run. They have no choice. While CBJ could be that home run, there is absolutely no guarantee. Without that guarantee they will look to Miles, Harbaugh, et al.

Butch will be a home run hire here - he would be a home run hire at Michigan. They will not hire Miles or Harbaugh - who are basically their form of Gruden.

We need to get Butch bumped, extended, about a $15 million buyout and finish out this top 5 recruiting class.

Totally disagree. But I am not concerned if he were to leave. Rather he stay but we are not in the same situation we were two years ago.

Michigan never actually "contacted" Butch.

Agents are behind the scenes, whether it's true or not really doesn't matter to us. Butch stays and we get better and he makes a little more for doing a good job.

The roster really isn't that much better now than it was, especially if the 2015 class implodes.

Not concerned if he were to leave? Good lord. It would be crippling. Absolutely crippling. Let me guess you think we could get Gruden or Charlie Strong? No. We would end up with another up and comer who would talk multiple years to build his team. You live in a fantasy world.

I definitely don't see butch leaving, but what if. What if 2 days from now we are the one's on espn searching for a coach, that would be devastating.

No it wouldn't. Look, I like Butch and staff and I really want them here. He has upgraded the talent and profile of the program. Finding a replacement would be much easier. UT has gotten tons of good PR this year. A great recruiting class is on the way, the new guy would just need to be a guy that can hold it in tact. I don't want a change, but I won't panic either.

Fantasy world. There is absolutely no way in the world we wouldnt lose AT LEAST a handful of recruits who just want to follow Butch. We would go from a top 5 class to a top 25 class if we were lucky.

Jones isn't going anywhere. He has invested 2 years here and no way he starts over. He knows that if he left, it would leave Tennessee in a HUGE hole. He'd be the most hated coach to date. Know way he does that. He has some crazy talent developing here and I truly believe he loves these kids and loves this school.

What does Mich have that we don't? Colder weather and less competition? No fun in that.

I myself would be concerned, for reasons you mentioned. However, imo, it wouldn't be crippling. You never know who would or wouldn't be interested. It's a team on the cusp of competing in the East, I am not sure we would resort to a desperate hire. I love Butch. I don't think he leaves and I REALLY don't want him to leave. It would be a negative. I don't think it would be a disaster.

Fantasy world.

Maybe. I didn't say we would land a huge name or anything like that, I am just saying that noone can say for sure it would be a disaster. That's foolish. You don't know. I don't know. Comparing it to the previous hiring situations is absurd.

Totally irrational. Yes we would get another up and comer. Butch has set a foundation. We just need a competent AD that would not panic and go after another Dooley. That was the mistake that broke this program.

Yeah, I think we would lose some. However, you have some legacies who would prob stay. Some in state that would stay perhaps, and some that are just really invested and close to the guys. You don't know who the potential hire would be. Maybe just maybe he brought some with him. You are saying something is certain, whereas I am saying it is uncertain. I am simply saying that we wouldn't know if it would be a disaster. Crazy things happen in sports. For you to say it would be a sure fire disaster seems more of a stretch than me saying it may not be.

This UT team has lots of talent and even more coming in. Next year we are well equipped to win 8+ games. There is a big pay day coming for Jones at UT if he is confident in his ability to win, probably a bigger pay day than Michigan would be willing to give him if they were to offer.

No sense in worrying about matters in which we have absolutely no control. If he stays, he stays. If he goes, he goes. That's it.

First off I like our coach and our football program. We have made great strides in the right direction and I truly believe the next two years will be progressively better. I don't want CBJ to leave at all. GBO!

Having said that; CBJ never said that he did not want the job, that he turned it down, or that no one contacted him. Below are his direct quotes. I was a little nervous about his answer, because he didn't flat out say "NO". The only part of it that I read as no is that; “There’s no validity to it."

Quote:
Back in October Jones brushed off talk about his rumored candidacy for the coaching job (at Michigan) saying, “it’s not even worth discussing."
“There’s no validity to it. I’m not even going to waste your time or my time even commenting on that. I think y’all know how I feel,” Jones told reporters on Oct. 28th.

Report: Butch Jones turned down potential job at Michigan

What happens when those home run guys turn down the job? Who's next? Look at Florida for example and we know how our coaching search turned out..

I think Florida got the man the AD wanted. That was a quick hire IMO with no drama like we had. Not even close.
