I don't believe this guy is going to compete for recruits with the likes of jimbo and the sec scavenging Florida. Hopefully I'm right and Florida goes into a rut.

McElwain looks like he has a chance to be good but he's hardly a slam dunk hire. Then again, Muschamp owned us, so it probably doesn't matter as far as we're concerned.

He did a good job at Colorado State but I'd be interested in seeing how he does recruiting. Florida right now, even without a head coach, is the favorite for a couple of top ten defensive ends and highly rated offensive tackle.

Good reminder that even well funded, highly recognized programs aren't stealing top coaches.

Volnation would have gone ape**** if this was the first guy on our list a few years back. It seems like Florida is realizing that tradition does little to sway the big fish.

What is this loser mentality all about that I have been reading lately concerning UF? UF is not a world beater girls, relax. We will get that monkey off our back soon enough.

I'm a VFL and alum that lives in Ft Collins (25 years). I have been through the Earl Bruce days, the Sonny Lubick era and all the cruddy years before Coach Mac arrived. Incidentally, I own a little bar in old town FtC and had beers with CJMc several times there. After discussing the future with him, It was apparent that his goal was to turn the program around, get a new stadium and facilities, then move CSU to a better conference, preferably the Big 12.

The town of Fort Collins is a beer town, a weed town and a very fun town to live in. And yes, there are some deep rooted football fans here, but not attached to CSU because of the melting pot (pun intended) culture here. Lots of SEC fans but also lots of Big 10, Big 12 and PAC12 here too....

So the city didn't support the new stadium plans very well and left Coach Mac in a tough position because it's my understanding that it was part of his agreement with CSU to help keep him here long term. It's a 50/50 opposition to proponent mix and the opponents were very loud and visible. In my opinion, it made his future here almost inevitably opaque and voila, FL comes in and snatches him.

The stadium was/is privately funded and yet, the residents of FtC fought it hard saying that is money better spent on something else. Not sure what? I screamed "Successful football is a money maker!!! And it will enhance the University and city tax revenue! If you don't believe me go ask Boise Idaho and Eugene Oregon!"

Anyhow....

He is an offensive mind and gets his players to play at full potential...and beyond. He was recruiting well and had transfers like Dee Hart from Bama that made a huge difference in the way CSU played football, mostly in terms of ground speed (on a different level). They were very efficient and balanced this year, particularly on offense, with three players in top 10 skill categories in the country.

IMO, Florida just made a great hire and I hate it because I'm VFL.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

Good, not great hire IMO. He's done pretty well at Colorado State and has SEC experience. If he hires a good staff, he'll be competing for the east soon. He won't be a Spurrier or Meyer though. JMO.

Seems like another gamble from FL's standpoint. If I was hiring an up-and-comer then they better be 12-1 or 13-0.

I think Muschamp will end up at Auburn as DC.

Could be a cautionary tale for some Vol fans. Florida has the facilities, the program, and in the middle of one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country and it is still difficult to attract what many would call a "top tier" coach to come get beat up and beat down in the SEC.

No doubt about it.

Our fans would be cryin like little britches if we had hired someone so "unproven"

Where are all the "until we start acting like a top their program and go out and hire a proven head coach like Alabama or Florida would do if they had to hire a new coach" people?

If he can recruit at the same level that Muschamp was able to recruit at while developing a QB and finding a few playmakers UF will challenge next year in the East because thier defense is good and loaded with talent. UF was a QB away from having a great team this past season!

McElwain is a better hire than some are suggesting. He is not a big splash hire but he is a good solid coach. Florida could have done much worse and I wish they had.
