The real reason Marlin Lane was suspended

Nilo Silvan ring any bells? People want a player's career ended before they even have a chance

Any parent who sends daughters off to college will be reassured by the recent push to improve reporting and accountability of sexual and violent assaults on campuses.

Seems the issue might be Volunteer Hall? Isn't there an RA over there; yes, these are young men with their pictures and lives all out in public. Every college these days has some time of Life Skills coordinator who is supposed to remind(harp) on just what can destroy your life if you are intoxicated/drug user and make a poor decision. Do we now keep a separate rap sheet for CBJ's boys?

Lane will go on to a professional career. The NFL is full of guys like Lane.:bad:

What are you talking about. Lane was cleared of wrong doing.

Regardless of the legalities, story is not good for the program. The article noted that Marlin is one team leaders as one of 13 members of player staff. Mamas don't want to send their sons to programs where this kind of behavior goes on. I wonder about the timing of the story and who leaked it to the press.

Where what kind of behavior goes on?

Why would mamas not want to send their son to play at a program where lawful behavior goes on?

Police report means little. I can file a police report today against anybody saying anything. What did an investigation uncover and were charges brought? Ferguson missouri police reports said a cop chased poor innocent Mr Brown and murdered him. That's doesn't make it accurate.
Many here assume they know what went on but don't. That's not how our legal system works, though you want to take the side of the accuser, who backed off.
I wonder what her plans were in a college football dorm room at 2 am? To be blunt, probably to screw. Never hung out with a girl at that time of the morning in an apt or dorm that wasn't there for that reason. It's a booty call.

Not to sound like a Noles fan trying to defend our boy but, the victim didn't want to pursue it. If it was a serious allegation and there was sufficient evidence then the DA would have no choice whether the victim was on board or not to move it up the chain of command. If the girl was having consensual sex with Orta with Lane in the room and Orta acting surprised that Lane walked out of the room instead of "Smashing" (his words) it then there are more variables to the story than the public or story ever told and I would bet alcohol or social drugs were involved and poor decisions by 2 sides were probably made.

Rapists need to be in jail. That said, girls that go find a party, have sex and feel bad about it after are a dime a dozen. It was called the walk of shame the next morning when coeds would leave dorms early am after having sex with guys they hardly knew or just met and those types of girls are all over campus, especially hunting down athletes.

All this bashing of FSU and... We ARE FSU.

Not even close. From the article, it appears the UTPD was light years faster than the Tally PD to investigate the complaint when it was made.

The victim's account evidenced consensual sex followed by rape. The Winston victim never consented to even being in the apartment.

The kit showed evidence of sex, but, presumably, collected no DNA. Paired with her story, it's a tough case for the prosecutor to make to a local jury.

I'm encouraged by the responsiveness of the UTPD, and likewise encouraged by CBJ's swift action in the Paulk matter. I would like to have seen some mention of that in the article, because it would have been a more even handed report on the steps the administration are taking to protect the daughters in attendance.

One thing is for sure, is that I am putting my daughter in Tae Kwon Do and/or MMA training.

Not going to argue with valid posts because I agree with them. My point is the way the article tells the story casts a negative light on the program. It's about public perception. How does the public perceive the situation?

About the same way it was perceived before. Big. Southern. Dirty.

Like I said earlier the Tennesseean has waited right before the vandy trial starts next week!!

No one is saying that UT did everything correctly, well, most aren't saying that. But not making this an affair for the media does not equal a cover up. The proper authorities were involved, thus your allegation of a cover up is dismissed. An investigation was conducted, one that lasted longer than a week from the account, to determine if a crime had been committed. Apparently the DA found insufficient evidence to support a crime. Of course that doesn't mean a crime wasn't committed, but they did not have enough evidence to prove one had either. That part is quite simple. Now, could the DA have swept something under the rug? Possibly, but to what end? That's a big stretch to make in Knoxville, where the police are known to arrest athletes over the simplest things.

Simply put, nothing suggests there was a cover up. You have a he said/she said allegation, which even a non-lawyer such as myself makes for a tough case to pursue. The only "eyewitness" supports what he said. And yes, given they're teammates, I know it's not unbiased testimony, but no other witness was present.

The real truth of the matter is both parties were guilty of bad judgement that night. Maybe a crime was committed, but maybe does not equal guilt.

Best post yet on this thread. :salute:

Putting the university aside...one word describes the whole story....sin, which all 3 were guilty of. I can tell you being a former immoral person myself, nothing good comes from sin. They all will have consequences from this. We all reep what we sow. My fellow Christian bros know what I'm talking about.

Go Vols! Beat SC!

Ok, good 'ole Southern boys, let's walk out beyond the back 40 and look at National News. All colleges are dealing with this negative public perception. Yes, social media and news media add fuel to the fire of speculation. But, being said, if as reported, football players are intoxicated or high, probably not many good decisions will follow AND someone will accuse them, snap/video a damaging behavior and unfortunately, it reflects on ALL of Team 118. Both sides may be guilty of questionable behavior, but it is the side with the most to lose that looks worst.

CBJ needs to tighten up his program and, at least, try to lessen the number of occurrences. If a football player puts himself in a questionable position that results in (even false) accusations, he bears some blame for mixing it up.

BTW, what is Lane's major, anyone know?

UT did absolutely nothing wrong in this situation. This "journalist" is on a witch hunt and uses UF as her model of handling this type of accusation? She says UT has chosen to act very differently than UF while acknowledging that Lane was suspended for 2 months. That's about 1.5 months longer than Treon Harris was. Her attempt to disparage UT's handling of the issues was poorly backed.

If UT had handled it like UF did (quickly, openly, transparently), perhaps UT wouldn't have had to suspend Lane for 2 months, 1.5 months longer than Treon. UT did Lane no favor in the long run by trying to keep this quiet. In fact, UT made the situation far, far worse for Lane in the long run. Now a cloud looms over his head, fair or not, liberal media or not, just or not. Your attempt to protect UT's handling of the issue is short sighted for both the university and Lane.

this is just another story from college life that is so murky you that you can't get to the truth. the girl was clearly there for a sexual encounter. I know there was an opportunity one time during college for me and two of my friends 2 have sex with a girl at the same time. She was on board with it but I had to pull my friends aside and tell them that regardless of what she is saying right now, 2 weeks from now if she changes her mind and tells everybody that it was rape, we are all going to jail. Any girl mentally damaged enough to have sex with three guys at the same time, is nobody you probably want be having sex with. these college football players live rock star lifestyles sometimes and that sometimes draws the worst kind of women to be around them. From the comments she said the players were saying to her it sounds like some of the players are getting sucked into that Rockstar lifestyle where they think everything just comes to them. I hope that isn't the case.
