I was listening to sports radio earlier and that idiot Clay Travis was talking about Butch and although I didn't catch all of it he said that in his research a SEC coach had never been successful unless they won at least nine games in their second season. Since Butch can't win more than eight this year he seemed to be saying Butch couldn't be successful.
I did some research on Travis. He like Derek Dooley is an attorney. Derek Travis, Clay Dooley one is like the other, one is an idiot lawyer that couldn't coach and the other is an idiot lawyer that can't discuss football intelligently.

Don't Feed The Troll!!! (calling Travis a troll, not you :hi:)

The only thing I'm truly disappointed with is that we didn't upset anybody this year.

Coming into the year I said it would be tough to get six/seven wins out of this schedule but I just wanted to see an upset of some kind. Don't really consider USCe an upset because they're way down this year.

You're being too picky then. :)

USCe is an 8 point favorite, iirc, and the game is at there place. Definitely a big game for this team, and they should be commmended if they win.

I'm inclined to think it is somewhere in between. The OL played at a level unseen all year. I'm interested to see if that is because of Dobbs or if it was a one off.

I believe the O-Line did play better. They seemed to play with more confidence (maybe because of Dobbs) than what I've noticed in earlier games. I also think that some confusion in the defense led to the first quarter problems and this was increased by the way Bammer sent players in during the final seconds before the play clock would run out. They looked better from the second quarter on. If they improve (after film study) this week we should all be happy after the USCe game.

Don't think Spurrier nor Mullen got up to nine wins at Carolina/State

On the defense, it seems that the beginning of the game was a carryover from the end of the Ole Miss game...where they balled out all game with no hope of the offense holding up their end...Ole Miss scored in bunches once that crystallized. Soon as Dobbs showed a spark, that needle moved and they represented. They got beat but everyone here could see the difference in just sheer ability from the last 10 years.

The offensive line situation reminds me of the year Tony Romo emerged in Dallas...if there was a loose defender in the backfield, Drew Bledsoe would drop immediately...there was a funny moment once where Michael Strahan ran past him but missed and he didn't realize it...he sees Strahan on the ground and he immediately flops down next to him like they were having a play date. When Romo got into the same game, there were multiple big plays made downfield AFTER a defender had a hand on him. The same OL that was castigated for conspiracy to murder when Bledsoe played, had Pro Bowlers in the following years. I don't equate the exact same result for our guys, but we might be surprised at some legacies when this book has been completed.

Spurrier didn't win 9 games until his 6th season at USCe and Mullen did win 9 his 2nd season but then won 7, 8 and 7 the next three seasons.
Travis tries to compare everyone to his sweetheart James Franklin. Like I said, he's an idiot.

He's just looking to rile up the Tennessee fan base. Nothing would please him more than to turn Tennessee fans against Butch.

Clay actually IS a Tennessee fan, but he lines his pockets every time he talks crap about the Vols. Money and being a D-list sports taking head are more important to him than wanting to see the Vols succeed.

Is this new? Did Butch just squash the Michigan rumors?

I was stoked about it too, but it's from May. Either way, hopefully Butch comes out with something to this effect if the rumors keep ramping up.

Is this new? Did Butch just squash the Michigan rumors?

Just before the UT game started on Saturday, ESPN showed video of the UT locker room and Butch firing up the players. He said something to the effect of just go out there and do your jobs and make sure you got each other's back and I will have your back. they then went back in forth with...

Butch: "You got my back?"
Players: "We got your back?"

The players and coaches need the fans to have their backs too. Everyone knows what the last years have done to our beloved football team. It isn't going to turn around in one or two years. It is going to take 3, 4, or even 5 years to fix all the damage. The above statement was Butch telling the UT players, fans, and potential recruits, "I got your back!". How will we tell Coach Jones that, "We got your back Coach!"? I for one am going to try to go to as many games as I can and cheer as loud as I can for 60 minutes until my throat hurts.

I think selling out a stadium with 100,000+ people every week despite 4 straight losing seasons pretty much says we have his back.

Agreed. VN is not representative of the fans Butch encounters on a day to day basis. He's a beloved figure in Knoxville right now.

I'll admit that I'm no twitter expert but it did sound good. That's probably how he really feels whether that's fake or real. So all he twitter experts out there, fake or real?

Bear Bryant and General Neyland didn't win nine. They barely played nine.

Doug Dickey didn't win nine at either UT or Florida in year two. Johnny Majors didn't win nine.

More recently, Hugh Freeze didn't win nine; Spurrier at SC either.

None of the other coaches took over programs in the shape and with the difficult schedule Tennessee has. Call it excuse making if you like, but it's true. Franklin had a perfect storm of a down SEC East and atrocious OOC scheduling. Mullen had a much easier schedule both in and out of conference in 2010 than what Tennessee has endured.

Hugh Freeze is actually the closest comparison in my opinion.

Butch Jones ultimately may not succeed at UT, but this doesn't make me think he won't.
