Rewatching the game right now. Hurd gained 6 yards right up the middle before the AJ carry call......

It was gimmicky. The defense was acting confused quite a bit and the coaches put him in to capitalize on that confusion. It didn't work. But, how many times when Dooley ran the beast package did AJ not get that two yards. I honestly can't recall once, but the line is worse now. I don't have a huge problem with it. Sometimes you try a gimmick and lose. I had more issues with the double reverse against ole miss.

We have a RB you don't have to gimmick with. Hurd was punishing their LBs....

I do feel Tennessee has it's QB. Dobbs will be that guy the next couple of years. He'll be fine. He actually throws passes to specific WRs that are to the players strengths. Worley Bird would throw jump balls to Pig Howard.....

It is just another rule that UT can't get the benefit from. Berry literally might have won the game on a blocked FG, gets ripped down by the face mask, and there wasn't a punishment.

That was a crazy game. I was there and UT fans were all lined up walking down the aisle and then boom, block the kick and 2 more OT's later we're headed to Atlanta.

Anyway, what a horrible first quarter. It really made me question the staff as I sat there with Bama fans to my left and behind me (really getting sick of having to sit next to them at games in Neyland). And I honestly was afraid the team may be mailing it in for the season.

Heck of a turn around though. The loss still hurts but the guys played tough and I'm still seeing progress and am optimistic for the rest of the season. I very much hope Dobbs is the man the rest of the season and lays claim to the job for next season.

Dobbs for Heisman
Considering he hasn't taken a snap all year and turned in a performance like that with our baaaad OL?
yes.gif

I disagreed with the call, but I would have also disagreed with a handoff to Hurd. That is automatic QB sneak territory in my book. Jashon Robertson and Marcus Jackson are tailor made for blocking for a sneak.

Did I miss something? Why are some people bagging on Peterman? Did he turn the ball over?

Thought we looked alright on the first drive and on the second drive there was a questionable spot on third down. Idk I mean Dobbs needs to start but I thought Nate did OKAY.

I thought he played pretty good for the small amount of time he got. Dobbs is so much more dynamic though and his running ability helps to mask the o-line issues.

I said this last season and it still holds true I believe. Hopefully Peterman continues to work hard and keep his head up because some day we'll need him to help win an important game.

Either or just give it to the guys that we're carving Bama up. We had 181 yards rushing tonight. Why get fancy again????

Agreed. The offense moves with Dobbs.

Was it just me or did the O-line look 100% improved with him back there? That mobility really slows down a pass rush...

It wasn't you - they really did play better. Dobbs has a vertical threat, can run (so D's can't cheat), gets the ball away quickly and really helped that line a LOT. They have some confidence now that will help them even more. They're still the same on standard run plays but overall they were improved by MILES.

And threw to the middle, and allowed the qb to keep to make the D guess. Do those with Worley and we'd have had better results with him too.

Whatever it takes though, happy jake finally green lighted some keepers.

Do you honestly think you know more than the coaching staff? Bc it comes off that way. If Worley had the ability to run effectively you can be sure that the staff would call keepers for him. Do you not think they would call plays that give them the best chance to win? I don't understand some of you people.

One thing about Coach Jake I haven't seen mentioned. He deserves a bit of credit for adjusting. We were getting killed on those scrimmage line/side passes but when he realized our QB could actually throw he DID adjust and limited those passes a great deal.

It's sooooooo nice to finally see a QB who can throw on target down field. A vertical game? What's that? :)

I could see the coaches starting Peterman to let Dobbs get a look for a couple of series and calm some nerves since he hasn't played all year. I'm sure they didn't expect to give up 20 like we did in 13 minutes. Besides Peterman looking like an all American in practice, I can't think of another reason not to start Dobbs.

Anyone else think we beat South Carolina?

With Dobbs at QB, I think we beat South Carolina on the road. South Carolina has the worst defense in the SEC and the offense put up some big yards against a very good Bama defense.

With Dobbs at the helm, 2015 will be our year to make noise. Not championship-level, but we'll crack the top 25, IMO.

No real weak spots on next year's squad either, because as we saw tonight, the offensive line isn't as much of an issue with a mobile QB. Plus, they'll be another year older.

Just gotta make a bowl game this year to have something to build on. A potential 7-6 or 8-5 record heading into the offseason and NSD would be massive.

If Dobbs continues to improve each week I think we go 7-5.

Whether I expected us to win or not doesn't change where UT is as a football program. I did not expect UT to win this game. We lost by a wide margin. It wasn't close. Do you honestly see this game as a small victory for Tennessee?

I will be your huckleberry. Going into tonight's game, Alabama was ranked 3rd nationally in scoring defense (13.1 ppg), 2nd in rush defense (63.4 ypg) and 3rd in total defense (262.1 ypg). Counting tonight's game, Alabama has surrendered only 11 touchdowns defensively, only five of which culminated drives 70 yards or more in length. Our two touchdown drives were both 84 yards in length and culminated 10- and 15-play drives, respectively, which lasted 5:00 and 6:46, respectively.

Quite simply, it is very, very difficult to move the ball the length of the field against Alabama and put six points on the board and tonight we had the two longest scoring drives against Alabama all season. The only other drives 'bama has surrendered which were of similar magnitude were a 14-play, 79-yard TD drive by WVU and a 10-play, 81-yard scoring drive by Arkansas. We amassed 181 yards rushing vs. 'bama, almost three times their seasonal average, and 383 yards total offense, second only to the 393 yards which West Virginia compiled vs. Alabama.

Given the depth of the hole out of which we had to climb, how mightily we have struggled all year to run the ball and the fact that Josh Dobbs had not played previously this season, I was very impressed with our offensive performance. In the final analysis, unfortunately, Amari Cooper almost singlehandedly defeated us.

2015 will be fun. Im still worried about this year though. The Oline looked like they played well tonight. They need to continue to do so. If Dobbs can continue to play like he did today, the future will be fun.

Next year we return everybody except Worley, Gilliam, AJ, Lane and J.Williams. (Unless some leave the program). MLB might be the only step back we take next year. Kahlil, Butcher and Tuttle... Kamara... Preston Williams... Jack Jones, Boulware, Stewart... Abernathy... Jennings and Dormady.... and possible Burrell, Newsome, Frasier, Love, Richmond, Martin... We should see a significant improvement next year.

Anybody know who our starting OL was this game? We need to stick with this lineup

Even when we looked terrible, I still thought we matched up well against USC on paper.

I think their loss to Auburn had to be demoralizing, and exactly what we wanted to see before we played them. 4-4, when you expected to be in the SEC east hunt = an unmotivated team down the stretch

I have no doubt, with the pressure Dobbs escaped, that our other QB's would have had 5-7 sacks... No doubt

From John Brice: #Vols OL opens from L to R: Brett Kendrick, Kyler Kerbyson, Mack Crowder, Jashon Robertson, Jacob Gilliam.

I'm a firm believer in the fact things are not always as bad as they seem, but they're not always as good as they seem, either. One game does not a season make, and while there are both positive and negative that can be learned about a team in every game, it doesn't necessarily define the team.

The offense looked much improved tonight over the past three games. Well, actually since Worley went out of the Georgia game (although he did have a couple of good drives when he came back in).

I do believe Dobbs is the reason for that improvement. A couple of things that can't really be quantified are chemistry and momentum, and it seems he brought or ignited both. He really just seems to be a playmaker. We need to remember, though, that we still have a lot of youth in a lot of positions, and that the inconsistencies that come with youth are still very possible.

So what looked good tonight against a very good Alabama team that may have been overlooking us, may not look so good in Columbia next week. I hope that's not the case, of course, but only time will tell.

All that being said, I am very encouraged by what I saw in this game, and I believe we win out. There are only four more regular season games to enjoy/hate/cuss/discuss, so win or lose, they're still my Vols and I choose to watch them and enjoy cheering for them the rest of the way.

So, not only are you rationalizing losing, you're ridiculing those who refuse to do so.

You have officially accepted losing.

You don't ****ing get better by making ****ing excuses.

Ha ha. If this your attitude I will be interested to see how you handle Tyndall's first season at the helm for basketball.

In the end, I'm not a coach, I'm a fan. Coaches are the ones who shouldn't accept losing, shouldn't accept excuses, and shouldn't be satisified with moral victories. Seems clear to me CBJ doesn't accept any of these things.

That said, our roster issues (right now) are a pretty rational explanation for our record. So as a fan, I can accept the present circumstances somewhat because I'm seeing the improvement year over year Dooley (for example) never showed.

I am encouraged. Dobbs gives us a chance.

Team has to be fired up after his performance.

I agree. I think this game might be a spring board for this team confidence wise. We might come out of this looking much better than when we went into it.
