Drastic action needed on Ebola

I'm not disputing that it's "scary", I'm saying ebola is one virus that isn't likely to cause a global pandemic and kill millions. Why? Because it's not easily transmitted and has yet to spread outside of Africa in it's entire existence. I think everyone is pretty much in agreement that it will only get worse before it gets better but you won't see such an outbreak in the States, Canada, Europe, or Australia/New Zealand.

If it becomes airborne then it's a game changer, especially with the near 90% fatality rate. Obviously people are very concerned with the latest outbreaks because it seems there is something different due to the increase in infection.

The killer virus is spreading like wildfire, Liberia's defense minister said on Tuesday and pleaded help from the UN. Now a German Ebola expert goes one step further and comes up with a shocking assertion.

"The right time to get this epidemic under control in these countries has been missed," he said. That time was May and June. "Now it is too late."

Schmidt-Chanasit expects the virus will "burn out itself" in this part of the world.

With other words: It will more or less infect everybody and half of the population - in total about five million people - could die.

Five million people? WTH?? Do we not have a cure for this nasty stuff yet?

I'm sure the US Army's biological warfare department and private biotech firms have been working on a vaccine or treatment for years. It's just until this year it have never be seen as important because there has never been an outbreak of this scale before and due to the fact it's not easily transmitted and has stayed in Africa.

You don't think it's spreading fast because most Africans don't believe ebola is actually real? Then you got them actually attacking quarantine locations to free those infected inside, it's madness. Just watch this;

This man just escapes the quarantine center he was at. I just don't get it, if I had a disease like that and I knew I could cause people to get infected I'd suck it up and rather die in isolation than potentially kill hundreds or thousands of other innocent people.

It's nice to see the general public is starting to get smart enough to stay away from him. Truthfully, how scary would that be with some dude carrying Ebola running at you? That's as bad as a zombie. And all he would have to do is spit in your general direction just about.

Not looking good in West Africa:

"A top German virologist has caused shockwaves by asserting that it’s too late to halt the spread of Ebola in Sierra Leone and Liberia and that five million people will die, noting that efforts should now be focused on stopping the transmission of the virus to other countries."

Virologist:

And it looks like a 4th infected American is being flown into Atlanta for treatment:

Good. Bring them back for treatment. Regardless of what you believe, there is nothing to fear. The mortality rate in Africa stands at a little over 50%. It would be much, much lower here. The people who have been flown back have recovered and not infected anyone.

So do you consider this good news or stupid?

Had I thought it was stupid, I would have said as much. And I'm sure it's good for the patient and increases his chances for survival. Taking this course of action is probably as relatively low-risk as it can be in the context of dealing with an inherently high-risk situation like ebola. However, regardless of what you believe, there is some risk involved in shipping an ebola patient here for treatment.

What I find stupid and careless, as I stated previously, is shipping an undisclosed number of people who have been exposed to the virus into the USA without telling anyone.

Looks like we're sending in 3,000 troops. Can you imagine being a soldier, surviving multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and then getting orders that your leaving your family again to go to an ebola infested country.

It's all making sense now... With the government purchasing the Ebola safe suits and the government funding to produce much more ZMapp.

Got to be ****ing kidding me.

So I guess the U.S. State Department has decided it needs 160,000 ebola-proof hazmat suits:

Lakeland Industries launches hazmat suits for Ebola - Awesome Capital

"With the U.S. State Department alone putting out a bid for 160,000 suits, we encourage all protective apparel companies to increase their manufacturing capacity for sealed seam garments so that our industry can do its part in addressing this threat to global health."

Nice.

Now it makes sense James. :)
3000 of those suits will be going to troops.

If people would act rationally and intelligently then I am sure the public would be told. Unfortunately the general public doesn't act like that. There would be panic, people unnecessarily flipping out, conspiracy theory wackos and some general unrest. People just hear the word Ebola and the automatically think death. It's not careless and stupid not to tell people. It's the only option.

Betting he did his previous work in Global Warming.

Are we at the point where we consider banning entry into the US for persons who have been in the subject countries during, say, the past 4 months ?

Indeed. I wonder what the other 157,000 are for?

Yes, it's all for our own good. All hail Big Brother.
