I don't think it's the actual comment but rather who said it. It's like Sarah McLachlan saying she'd attend a cock fight.

This is a guy who was a beneficiary of a new idea of a black coach in the NFL. His hiring was a pioneer move to break a social barrier just like this has become and it's expected that he is sensitive toward that sort of movement. His opportunity to play professional football was started by a similar "distraction" with the first black player in the NFL in the 40's. It comes off as ungrateful, hypocritical and is a little surprising he would publicly state that he would avoid a circus.

Perhaps it's an unfair expectation but when you publicly present yourself as a "everyone deserves a chance" type guy, it seems you have to be consistent.

It appears that since TC season has started, Tony Dungy has been a way bigger distraction than Michael Sam.

Who cares? He wasn't given a chance based on talent & that's obvious. The self promoted pr he started probably did a lot to help him. God forbid anybody give their opinion on not drafting a gay player that's gonna have zero impact & be a media circus & an even bigger pr nightmare when he gets cut. It's sad the ones preaching equality & tolerance don't exercise it themselves.

Sure you can. Just like NFL teams have avoided drafting players with character issues. Or college teams not offering scholarships to similar players.

Take Johnny Manziel for instance. Why is there so much disagreement about Cleveland taking him? Some folks don't think he's worth his baggage. Why did most of the NFL pass on Randy Moss in the 1st round? His reputation.

Coaches don't want distractions in the locker room/media circuses. They weigh the risk vs reward. If a player isn't talented enough to warrant the risk, they pass.

I don't care about his stance per se, but the hypocrisy is beyond incredible, Michael Sam won't be a bigger "distraction" than Vick was media wise.

It's funny how Dungy has gone to bat for a guy who committed criminal activities, punched a player after the game, and a white player using the n word, but a perfect citizen and guy who has done everything right who likes dudes and all of a sudden that's too much to handle for Dungy and won't go to bat publicly for him.

He was drafted last round. He is a long shot. He pretty much forced the NFL to draft him by "coming out." Draft him and then cut him, and then you can say he was given a chance.

He was a pretty decent college player .

He would have made camp with somebody.

I don't understand why people think he should have no shot in the NFL. When was the last time an SEC DPOY didn't deserve a shot in the NFL?

If anything, his announcement brought on closer scrutiny and hurt his draft status (not saying team's downgraded him for being gay, but that they all took a microscope to his game, moreso than they would have).

He was a 7th round pick. People get that he is a fringe player.

Unfortunately for you this isn't a character issue. There's no excuse for it. Character issues involve illegal or unethical actions.

Johnny Manziel's issue is the beginnings of illegal acts. People assume it'll lead to drug charges, DUI, etc.

Dungy also didn't say he would pass over Johnny. He said it about one player, Sam.

There's a difference in character flaws Vs. Social barrier circuses. One is acceptable to Dungy while the other isn't. That's the problem people are having with him. Discrimination is not a pick and chose issue. You can't accept a circus because so and so is black but not accept it because of sexual orientation.

who said he didn't deserve a shot? He is a distraction and likes the attention, most coaches don't want a circus around their team.

No he didn't. He was already out to everyone who needed to know in football. He didn't hide it
