I don't think it's the actual comment but rather who said it. It's like Sarah McLachlan saying she'd attend a cock fight.
This is a guy who was a beneficiary of a new idea of a black coach in the NFL. His hiring was a pioneer move to break a social barrier just like this has become and it's expected that he is sensitive toward that sort of movement. His opportunity to play professional football was started by a similar "distraction" with the first black player in the NFL in the 40's. It comes off as ungrateful, hypocritical and is a little surprising he would publicly state that he would avoid a circus.
Perhaps it's an unfair expectation but when you publicly present yourself as a "everyone deserves a chance" type guy, it seems you have to be consistent.
