Gun control debate (merged)

There were laws in place to prevent those Columbine murderers from getting those guns. If they had more laws in place do you think it would have stopped them? Also, you realize they had propane gas bottles, you know the ones that 90% of homes have fueling their gas grills, fashioned into bombs? Should we outlaw grilling now too? Timothy McVeigh made his bomb from diesel fuel and fertilizer so I guess we should outlaw trucks and quit growing things to eat.

What is needed is a full exploration of how these kids get guns. Are they buying them at a gun shop? Are the guns their parents'? Are they buying them illegally, and if so, how?

I am sure it's not always the same way, but if we knew better the pipelines, maybe we could come up with a way to place some safeguards or hurdles there that will at least slow them down, maybe long enough for law enforcement to get involved.

The first thing you need to do is focus better on where the real problems lie. Take for instance your huge hang up with guns stolen from private homes and trying to jack up the whole nations gun owners for insurance and any other liability you can hang on them. Problem is stolen guns from private resources is a tiny issue. Most sources I've seen are around 10%. Your real problem is with straw purchases and rogue FFL dealers.

But it's SO much easier to try to make John Q gun owner out to be the bad guy.

Excellent point. One only need to look at the success of this approach with patently illegal items, like drugs, to see the wisdom of this approach. I appreciate your thoughtful, well-reasoned solutions regarding items which are legal and constitutionally protected.

Has is worked with drugs? Same thing only difference is commodity.

EMILY MILLER: DOJ accused of targeting gun industry with 'Choke Point' program

EMILY MILLER: DOJ accused of targeting gun industry with 'Choke Point' program

The Obama administration, after failing to get gun control passed on Capitol Hill, has resorted to using its executive power to try to put some in the firearms industry out of business, House Republican investigators say.

The assertion is included in a report recently released by California GOP Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Citing internal Justice Department documents, the committee concluded that the administration used a program known as Operation Choke Point to target legal companies that it finds “objectionable.”

The program was started in 2013 to protect consumers by “choking” alleged fraudsters’ access to the banking system. The Justice Department essentially forces banks and third-party payment processors to stop accepting payments from companies that are considered “high risk” and are supposedly violating federal law.

However, the documents released by Issa’s committee show the federal government lumped the firearms industry in with other "high-risk" businesses including those dealing with pornography, drug paraphernalia, escort services, racist materials, Ponzi schemes and online gambling.

The committee also reported that Attorney General Eric Holder was informed the program has been shutting down legal businesses.

“We have documented that they are going after gun and ammunitions manufacturers, gun sellers and non-deposit lenders. Their own memos show they are well beyond enforcing the law,” Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Mo., said Friday.

Luetkemeyer sponsored an amendment, which the House passed Thursday night, which prohibits federal funds in the next fiscal year from being used to carry out Operation Choke Point. The Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act amendment passed by voice vote.

“There is an orchestrated effort by [the Justice Department] and [the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation] to do away with entire industries instead of going after the bad actors. This is wrong,” said Luetkemeyer, a former bank regulator, who currently serves on the House Financial Services Committee.

He said the goal is to stop the Justice Department by establishing “safe harbors for legal entities to do business.”

The congressman also said that if the amendment doesn’t fix the problem, he will introduce legislation to do it.

Justice Department spokesman Emily Pierce said Friday that all the assertions by the House committee are “false.” She said in an email that the documents Issa released actually “make clear that we are targeting fraudulent and illegal behavior.”

Pierce also said the department will continue to hold “accountable” the financial institutions that process fraudulent transactions.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for firearms and ammunitions manufacturers, said that several of its members have had banking relationships wrongfully terminated as a result of Operation Choke Point.

The group argues the federal government is discriminating against businesses “simply because they are engaged in the lawful commerce of firearms.”

Andrew Arulanandam, National Rifle Association spokesman, said Saturday that the group is working with members of Congress and affected parties to get answers about the program.

“The efforts of the Obama administration to impose its vision of a ‘fundamentally transformed’ America have already fallen hard on those who value the Second Amendment,” he said. “Some fear this could be yet another example of [the president’s] ‘phone and pen’ style of imperial governance.”

Emily Miller is the chief investigative reporter for Fox 5 DC. She is the author of Emily Gets Her Gun (Regnery/2013).

Gun Company Lays Off Workers As Obama Administration Blocks Re-importation Of The Rifle That Won World War II

Gun Company Lays Off Workers As Obama Administration Blocks Re-importation Of The Rifle That Won World War II

General George S. Patton recognized the .30-’06 M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle as “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” and the rifle accompanied American Marines and soldiers up the beaches of Normandy against the Germans, across the islands of the Pacific against the Japanese, and through the brutal cold of the Korean winter. It served America as our primary battle rifle through two wars, and is still prized today by collectors and shooters for itls timeless design and reliability.

Now Century Arms International is having to lay off workers because the Obama Administration has refused to allow these pieces of American history to be re-imported from South Korea.

A Vermont gun manufacturer is laying off 41 employees and is blaming the Obama administration.

Century International Arms in Fairfax imports surplus guns, reconditions them and sells them to gun dealers around the country.

The company says it was preparing to import a $30 million shipment of World War II M-1 rifles from South Korea, but Century International Arms says at the last minute, the White House blocked the deal.

When it comes to screwing over American veterans (both animate and inanimate), the Obama Administration doesn’t miss a trick.

You Won’t BELIEVE Why This 7-Year Old Was Suspended From School (Video)

You Won’t BELIEVE Why This 7-Year Old Was Suspended From School (Video)

Once again, the anti-gun fanatics are running loose in our children’s schools.

And this time they are punishing a kid who did the right thing! As a mom, this one has steam coming out of my ears.

First-grader Darin Simak goes to Martin Elementary in New Kensington, PA. On Wednesday he went to school just like any other day but, when he arrived, he realized there was a toy gun in his backpack.

What did Darin do?

Darin tried to do the right thing by immediately bringing the toy gun to his teacher and explained that “he knows he’s not supposed to have it.” His mom, Jennifer, said, “So I send my child to school. My child discovers a fake toy gun at about 1:30 p.m. He turns it in to the teacher and he’s sent to the office and suspended.”

And now Darin is facing expulsion from school. WHAT? That’s right — The punishment for breaking this “Level 3 offence” is expulsion for “a period of not less than one (1) year.”

Darin is “sad and confused” about why he can’t go back to elementary school.

I REALLY regret not picking up a Garand back when good ones were reasonably priced and available. I've already got a K98 so that would have made a nice pairing.

I have a Mauser 30-06 bolt action WWI rifle. I have no idea what it may be worth. It is what I use when I go deer hunting.

WWI production Mauser in .30-06?

Sounds like a sportarized version that was modified after the war. Mauser didn't make that caliber during the war that I know of.

It very well may be I am no gun expert. I will dig it out tomorrow and let you know model number. It is a nice gun. I have owned it around 40 years.

Sure it isn't a 1903 Springfield? That's a mauser-esqe bolt action but not technically a Mauser.

Throw a pic or two out there in the gun owners thread.

It has me curious.

not sure if appropriate thread but thought it was a good story

Two Men Use Girl As Human Shield

A St. Louis couple is likely thankful to have guns in their home after they were forced to use them to defend their daughter against two men Monday night.

The men, one of whom had an extensive rap sheet, confronted the couples’ 17 year-old daughter after she stepped outside of the house to go to her car, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Cortez McClinton, 33, and Terrell Johnson, 31, held a gun to the girl’s head and used her as a shield as they entered the family home, where a five-year old child was also present.

The girl’s father and mother witnessed the abduction, and both retrieved their guns. When McClinton and Johnson entered, the father fired several shots, hitting both men. The girl’s mother fired one shot but missed.

Johnson died at the scene. McClinton was wounded but was able to scramble off. He had his brother take him to the hospital.

In 2010, McClinton was charged with shooting another man. Charges were eventually dropped due to lack of witness participation. He also had drug possession and distribution charges against him.

McClinton is charged with second-degree murder, kidnapping, burglary, and criminal armed action and is being held on $1 million bond.
