Look at the scores from some of the games we lost that year:

Georgia: 44-51, L
Mississippi State: 31-41, L
South Carolina: 35-38, L
Missouri: 48-51, L

With even an average D, all four of those could easily have been Ws. The UF game probably would have been a W as well, and the Vandy abomination would have never happened. Only definite loss would have been to Bama.

It would have been a great season, but it almost certainly would have bought Dooley a lot more time. Hell, he might still be head coach and referring to this as "year zero" again.

I just threw up a little thinking about it.

The talent and coaching on offense was as great as the lack of talent and coaching on defense. Add in Dools' lack of everything except making a fool of himself telling stupid stories while making everybody mad and it was a lost 3 years. That's a lot for Butch/staff to overcome, but they are doing it. Going to surprise some people this fall.

@UTCoachElder: Excited for our Specialists camp tomorrow! We look to continue the tradition of having the best specialists in the country! #VFL

Working CMA Fest in Nashville this weekend and all I can think is that it's a damn shame one of the best country bands ever had to be named Alabama.

I always change the words of Dixieland Delight around ("GO VOLS" instead of the R-T words and "and Bama too" instead of "and Tennessee too"). Pisses 'em off but I love it and it's such a great song.

247: 5 Newcomers the could make an impact on D

1. Owen Williams

This is probably the safest pick on this list. Williams, a Georgia native who put up great numbers at Kansas’ Butler Community College but wasn’t an incredibly hyped prospect, enrolled in January and was one of the team’s strongest players from Day One. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Williams isn’t slow, either. He just didn’t show up in the greatest shape, which is actually fairly common for JUCO prospects. Williams has had a great attitude about getting in better shape, though, and he was clearly one of the team’s best defensive linemen this spring despite those conditioning issues. The thought here is that a good summer could make him a very solid defensive tackle at the SEC level. And he’ll play a lot.

2. Emmanuel Moseley

Fellow true freshman cornerback Evan Berry also could have made this list, but we’ll go with Moseley because we’ve seen him in person, and we know he can play. Moseley stepped up to the first-team defense midway through spring practice and hasn’t looked back since, despite being thinner than a No. 2 pencil at 5-foot-11, 165 pounds. Tennessee’s coaches felt like they’d found a potential gem in this three-star prospect from North Carolina, and it’s been tough to disagree with assessment to this point.

3. Dillon Bates

Bates just arrived in Knoxville last week, but he seems like a good bet for this for several reasons. The Vols need another quality body or two at linebacker, and Bates has the size, athleticism and football IQ to be one of those pieces. Bates, the No. 97 overall prospect in the 247Composite, is listed at 6-foot-3, 213 pounds on Tennessee’s official roster but told govols247 just before enrolling that he’s actually up to 230 pounds. And he still moves well in pass coverage as an outside linebacker. Even if Bates doesn’t win a starting spot over sophomore Jalen Reeves-Maybin, he’ll probably play a good bit.

4. Todd Kelly Jr.

Fellow four-star freshman safety prospect RaShaan Gaulden could very easily have made this list, but let’s go with Kelly for this reason: He’s bigger —*approximately 20 pounds bigger — and looks more likely to hold up at this level as a true freshman. Both are very good prospects, but Kelly was a bit higher rated for a few reasons, and his sturdy, 6-foot, 195-pound frame was one of those reasons. And doubts about Kelly’s level of competition while starring at Webb School of Knoxville should have been quieted at least a bit by his very good performance at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the practices that preceded it.

5. Dewayne Hendrix

Several true freshmen are going to have help this defense up front, and several are talented enough to potentially do that, but we’ll go with Hendrix for one simple reason: He seems to be someone who’s frame and skills are unique this this class. He’s a good-sized end at 6-foot-4 and nearly 270 pounds, but he’s not a jumbo-sized end like Derek Barnett who might have to slide inside to tackle. Hendrix is a very good prospect — a Top247 prospect — and he’s a good fit for this team. That’s a good combination that could lead to significant playing time this season. Several other true freshmen.

Ms. MockingVol will understand if she's a VFL IMO. Gruden time. Soon!

Well she is undoubtably a VFL so it might not take a whole lot of convincing! I'll just let her know that something really cool UT related is happening at the practice fields.

Heck, I'm just ready for the season and getting my hands on some student tickets for $40!
