That's nice that the officer in this story and the ones in the other stories use their own money to help. What I wonder is how the news stations get wind of it. Do the cops call them up and say, "hey, look at this nice thing I did?" When I give to charity or help someone out it never seems to make the news.
If I was a family member of the one being helped out and I see the way the media likes to run with stories about heavy handed cops I'd probably leak the story to try and balance the coverage. But that's just me.

Do you wonder how the media knows when the Volunteer athletes go to see the sick children in hospitals? Do you wonder how the media knows when charities respond to Africa or Chicago? Do you wonder how the media knows when a church responds to a disaster? Do you wonder how the media knows when a cop does something wrong (internally)? Do you wonder how the media knows your child made honor roll in elementary school?

Don't be a dummy, just because someone did something nice doesnt mean they did it for the coverage.

The guy is a ex cop from Detroit and is currently a fireman. You could tell a difference in their attitude when he told them.

Haven't been able to watch it yet as I'm at work but I'm sure they were like "aww fk" when he told them.

What's screwed up is they were looking for a white male in their 20's. He is a black man who just turned 40. Them Yankees must be racist as well.

Sounds like a waste of time.

They'd be better off profiling and ticketing the yahoos driving under the speed limit in the left lane, not turning off their signal lights and generally being a nuisance.

Like truckers? :p

I went to HS with this winner. When we were in our 20s he pulled a gun on someone, severely escalating a minor verbal altercation at a party in front of like 25 people. How do people like him get to be cops? It's a small town...somebody on the force had to know that story.

Off-duty officer arrested for DUI with child in vehicle, leaving accident scene | St George News

I have a little anecdote about these two brothers in my old neighborhood I grew up in. They were consistently the dumbest kids in school and had to change schools a couple times because of threats to expel them(grades, acting like douchewagons, ****ting in the sink). These dudes would put firecrackers in animals' mouths for fun. Shot a neighbor's cat with BB guns. Could barely read and write.

Years later I find out they're cops now. Not really inspiring any confidence about the local police... and yet, it feels so right. In the worst way.

I guess this is an off-duty cop saving a life :pepper:

I've never been a fan of "no knock" military style entries unless there is PROFOUND evidence that it is a hard target and that collateral damage risk is intensely scrutinized. Even then it should be a last resort used when nothing else seems feasible.

IMO the officer who threw the grenade and whoever was in charge should be going to jail.

I agree in principle, but there's a lot of blame that can be spread around on this one.

Surveillance team, leader, whomever gave the green light to enter, person tossing the grenade...long list of folks.
