OFFICIAL Gregg Marshall Thread

Not here to fight, this is your board folks.

Gregg is a unique person. Money isn't the most important thing to him. That's not to say money isn't important to him. MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin basically pushed Gregg into leaving a job that had been paying him about 150k into a $750k job. Gregg enjoys being the only fish in the pond. Some writer said earlier this year "the next bush he beats around will be the first one". He won't tell ANYONE what they want to hear.

But he's going to go (or stay) where's he happy. And history of fans attacking family (if the Martin rumors are accurate at all) isn't going to excite him, I promise you.

Plus, don't believe everything you read, but he's making $1.8 with a 10 year contract. That's 18 million....GTD. To be honest, I don't think $3 million interests him...but I suppose it COULD be a starting number.

IF Gregg talked to UT twice, you should hope both times were at Winthrop. If one of them was when you hired Martin, I'd say any chance with him is gone. He's not big on being passed over, especially on the cheap. He's made more for 5 years than what you paid Zo this last year. SMH

Remember too, he turned down $2+ to go to NC State, and more than that in initial talks at UCLA. If you think the UT job is more attractive than those 2, feel free to open your wallets, but it would surprise me.

Good luck to your program. Our series was good for both teams. It would be nice to continue at some point.

Gregg is right where he needs to be. He'd be crazy to leave. He's a grade A prick that could only be loved by an ignorant fan base. UT fans don't put up with "working like heck!" or "First and foremost mumble mumble mumble." We know the sport and don't like to be talked to like we don't. Marshall and UT would be a terrible relationship.

What kind of response is this ? A dog turd ? The level of education here seems to be going downhill over the years which is why I rarely visit anymore. The petition has a lot to do with influencing a coach's decision to stay or go, and furthermore it has a lot to do whether a coach decides to accept a job. Blindness and ignorance seems to be with those who do not have enough sense to treat people including coaches with some dignity and respect. If you have a problem with any coach, at least wait until the end of the season before taking any drastic measures like a petition.

I never knew dog turd would get someone this riled up on VN.

Yeah, never mind that whole "winning" thing. Anyone who loves Gregg Marshall is ignorant!

Going to be honest: aside from money, what would Gregg Marshall's motivation be to start a rebuilding project at a school that isn't top-tier in the sixth-best conference in America?

Yeah, but that sixth-best conference just had two teams in the Final Four!!!

I'd say our fan base qualifies at times. This comment notwithstanding...... :)

That was long before he had major success, and he was at Winthrop.

And he is now at WSU. Not meaning disrespect to either program, but historically speaking, I fail to see a real big difference between the two. If we cannot outbid them, we are in bad financial shape.

Would getting him mean a base salary that will be the most Tennessee has ever paid a BBall coach? Absolutely. It would also mean boosting the BBall operational budget considerably as well. I believe it is time to do both.

Do Dave Hart and the UT administration agree with me? I truly doubt it. If history is an indication, they would consider it too high of a risk. But sometimes, you just have to put your money where your mouth is.

I keep thinking if Hamilton had gone with Marshall the first time he was considered. Where would we be now? Sorry, petition people, THIS is the error we need to correct. JMO.

Whoever we get, even if it isn't Marshall, I am gonna back the guy.

This is jmo....

If Marshall wants to be here and UT wants him here, then he can be the coach. UT can afford the buyout which is only $400k. He only makes around $1.7 million. UT could offer him $2.2 easily. That's a half a million dollar raise. UT is a better job. Marshall is also from the south which could factor in to his decision.

400k buyout + 2.2 million salary - 1.3 million in buyout money= 7.9 million over 4 years

We were going to pay Cuonzo between 1.8 and 1.9 million. Over a four year span, that's the same money roughly. And it's a huge upgrade.

Now maybe I'm being overly optimistic to think Marshall would come for $2.2 million. I know VQ has said he turned down $2.5 million from Cal. But maybe he didn't want to live out there. It's not as good a job as UT and 2.5 there is less than 2.2 here. Not even close really.

Not saying it will happen. Just my thoughts.

If he's hoping UT offers $2.8, I don't think it will happen.

Well if he wanted to come to Tennessee it would already be known, he ain't coming.

Is it likely? No.

But Hart doesn't operate the way you and I would. And there's agents and egos involved. Just because he hasn't been announced yet doesn't mean it can't happen.

Let this thing play out. I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Again, maybe I'm overly optimistic but I'm not ready to throw in the towel and just accept that UT is going to hire an unworthy candidate just because a hire wasn't made in the first 72 hours.

I'm not holding my breath we're getting Marshall.

If Hart decided to shock everyone and hire Marshall, I'd be all for it. It would sting a bit to know we could have rehired Pearl at 2 million(or less), and had to pay 3 million to get Marshall, but I would enjoy seeing how it all turned out for UT and it's bid to get basketball back where it should be.

Why? Marshall is the better coach.

Maybe he is. If I had my choice of the 2, I would hire Pearl and bank the extra million+.

True, until Marshall does it on the biggest stage, he's going to have question marks. Same with Smart or Few at Gonzaga. They'd likely be excellent, but there's always going to be doubt.

Isn't the NCAAT the biggest stage? His final 4 is pretty impressive.

It's not the same as having to play and recruit against major conference foes twice a week.

Teams get hot and have good tournament runs sometimes.

This year look at them, 2nd round loss as a 1 seed.

I suspect Marshall would be very good, but there's doubt there that would keep me from paying him the money that NC winners make.

No telling where UT would be had it hired GM over Buzz. But he intimidated the AD. Telling....

I can understand hiring Pearl. Both had great resumes at that time but everyone knew Pearl was a find.

Everyone knows I'm a huge Marshall fan. But if they go with an up and comer I hope its White.

Probably wrong, but I just wonder with how quiet its been that their may be some numbers talk going on thru the weekend. Don't know how far Hart would go but I think if we had a bunch of others in play at this point we would have heard more. Hope I'm right but not real confident. Trying to think positive! lol
